The Pledge Given To Prince Hussein By The President & PM

By Mahinda Rajapakasa

Mahinda Rajapaksa

Mahinda Rajapaksa

The President and Prime Minister have given the UN Human Rights Commissioner an assurance that last year’s UN Human Rights Council resolution against Sri Lanka will be implemented. This UNHRC resolution was accepted and co-sponsored by the Sri Lankan government and passed by the UNHRC without a vote. The UNP led government accepted the Geneva resolution with the same carelessness with which they entered into the ceasefire agreement with the LTTE in 2002. Though our Ambassador in Geneva tried to negotiate different terms, that was deliberately stopped by the government which insisted on accepting the US sponsored resolution just as it was. There is now an attempt to portray this UNHRC resolution as a great diplomatic victory for Sri Lanka. But in reality, it was a great betrayal comparable to the Kandyan Convention of 1815.

The people should once again be reminded about what exactly has been undertaken by accepting this resolution. In operative paragraphs 1, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 12, the present government has accepted the report of the Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights which said that war crimes including the killing of civilians, torture, and the deliberate starvation of people had been committed by our armed forces and they have agreed to set up a war crimes tribunal manned by foreign judges, prosecutors and investigators and funded directly from overseas to try our war heroes for these alleged crimes. Furthermore they have agreed to remove through administrative action members of the armed forces who are suspected of having committed war crimes but against whom there isn’t enough evidence to place before the war crimes tribunal. They have also agreed to make amendments to the Public Security Ordinance and to repeal the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

In operative paragraphs 16, 18 and 20, the government has undertaken to devolve power in order to bring about a political settlement Sri Lanka and to do everything undertaken in the resolution under the supervision of the Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights (OHCHR). It should be borne in mind that the OHCHR that has come in for heavy criticism by the UN Human Rights Council itself. The UNHRC passes every year (with more than a two thirds majority) a resolution calling upon the OHCHR to end the domination of that office by Westerners and to reduce its dependency on Western funds. The government has thus agreed to place Sri Lanka under the supervision of an institution that is facing criticism by the UNHRC itself for its Western bias.

Having accepted the Geneva resolution, the government is now adopting various strategies to convince the public that it will not be harmful to the country. We saw the President and Prime Minister in recent days expressing to the international media what seemed to be contradictory views on the participation of foreign judges in the proposed war crimes mechanism. But this was just a drama for public consumption.  It became clear from the President’s Independence Day speech that there is no difference in the stands taken by him and the Prime Minister on the Geneva resolution. The President not only endorsed the decision of the government to implement the Geneva resolution but also accused those opposed to it of misleading the public. He further said in his Independence Day speech that the implementation of the Geneva resolution will only result in promoting democracy, reconciliation and respect for our armed forces. Subsequently, on 6 February the Daily Mirror reported that the SLFP had officially announced at a press conference that the UNP and the SLFP had jointly agreed on the implementation of the Geneva resolution.

The war was won by an SLFP government led by me. It is a matter of profound regret to me that our party has been subordinated in this manner to the UNP which tried to sabotage the war effort at every turn. Many would recall the manner in which the UNP even tried to stop the war by defeating the government at the budget vote in 2007. When that did not work, members of the UNP ridiculed the war effort by saying among other things that ‘any ox can fight a war’ and that ‘while claiming to be advancing on Alimankada the army was actually moving towards Pamankada’. It is not surprising to see such people now trying to exact revenge from those who won the war.

However, I am profoundly saddened to see that a section SLFP has also joined the UNP in this great betrayal. The UNP may be deriving a great deal of satisfaction by thus getting a section of the SLFP which won the war to underwrite every traitorous they commit. I call upon the people of Sri Lanka to unite and resist this attempt by the government to betray the country and our war heroes.

“It is a matter of profound regret to me that our party has been subordinated in this manner to the UNP which tried to sabotage the war effort at every turn.”

    Dear Honorable Minister

Is it not said in the Buddhist religion that everything goes through a cycle of change?

Are we about to go through another cycle of change? Maybe the UNP will get subordinated to the SLFP again?

This particular MP seems to know nothing but instigate revengeful agendas for personal gains. Guillible, gawky, uneducated masses would never pulse it so long the journalists would not explain the bits clearly and being unbiased. Right at the moment, his sons being in custody – the journos should take the side of the unbiased parties if long intoxicated poor people to change their mind sets. So long what they get to hear or read remain biased, the walk towards reconciliation will not work as planned – as Victor Iwan or other senior journalists say- the current adminsitration moves forward but not efficient enough.

The tragedy in Sri Lanka is that most of the people from the majority community irrespective of their education or position in life, thinks that they are Sinhala Budhist first and foremost!! For them justice, law and order, compassion, honesty does not matter!!!

        You are very right Hinniappu.

It is the DUTY of all right thinking journalists to paint the picture right, but many don’t, probably because they have other agendas. Truth is the casualty.

Much as we demand the highest performance from our professionals, be it doctors, engineers, scientists, teachers and sportsmen, we don’t demand the same of our journos. Hence they manipulate as they please and we swallow.

It took all the pent up gumption of several years for Ranil Wickremasinghe to finally mention names in parliament and boldly say that if the journos could name politicians, the pollies in turn could name the journos.

Ranil needs to be commended for that piece of home truth.

Where facts are being painted in a wrong manner – seeking political gains or personal agains- things would end up for them, if not today, but for sure later, as a glass wall would collapse into tiny pieces. Lies will not LAST longer.

We need to teach the society, as to why former President son is arrested.
What matters is not who he is – what the charges are…

“Furthermore they have agreed to remove through administrative action members of the armed forces who are suspected of having committed war crimes but against whom there isn’t enough evidence to place before the war crimes tribunal. “

Best chance to clean up your name/s mate! Prove once and for all that you all are clean!!

Well, but there is no hope. If you guys were behind what Prageeth went through, what Wasim went through, what Lasantha went through, what Bharatha went through, what Khuram Shaikh and his Russian fiancee went through… there is no hope. The best hope is to stop the UN from opening the old chapters.

“…the armed forces who are suspected of having committed war crimes but against whom there isn’t enough evidence to place before the war crimes tribunal”

Those who ordered them to do whatever they did should be taken to answer questions. Shivering, are you, mate?

Modayas of your kind would remain believing that he was the person who was instrumental winning the war.
Anyways, time will show you all a lession. This man MR ate the cake fully only – but the forces and civil society groups deserving the credit of war victory. Beside, previous govts did also their part accordingly but stay on a civlized manner, that civilian casualities should NOT be resulted, but babaric Rajapakshe would nto care of anything about human rights, no matter even if women or children woudl have been harmed, killed, they woudl do anything insensitively.

So, they did it even after post war episode – that is the record on this.

According to you – say, he earns some credit but should that be a licence him to go on being against human rights.

See, not only Notherners, but also sourtherners or people across the country suffered due to his lawless governing. People like you should finally open your eyes so that rest of the people could finallly work on for a good society where norms would be safeguarded.

Excellent idea! Because he did not give 2/3rd to the terrorists, he should be allowed kill, plunder and wreck the nation!! Just look at what is being revealed. Are you still blind?? Even as My3 and RW said the day they took Oath of Office, all appreciate MR’s determination to finish-off the terras. But not the following murders, plunder and nepotism.

Many like me believed that after the war you will set this country right. Your overall performance however set this country back much further. You became the God Father of a heartless and ruthless mafia. You have nothing to teach us or tell us now. Please leave us alone, shut up and deal with your own mounting problems. Chase all the sycophants around you including G.L.Pieris, as far away from you as possible. They are a curse and stand in the way of your own possible redemption. You cannot however resurrect as a leader now. Understand this and slip into the shadows quitely. By thrusting your unwanted presence on us, you are digging the hole you are in bigger. Please take refuge in the Dhamma and understand its meaning, depth and profoundness. Temples are not your refuge, but the Dhamma definitely is.

        You may be right.

The manner he argues today for Yoshita has been arrested, indicates everything what knolwedge MR should have. I really wonder how this man governed … some talents to manipulate the gawkly masses are there.

That is seen even in Gadafi, living North korean leader, Zimbawele old man, Mubarak and several other power greedy but uneducated men of the nature of Mahinda. Mahinda has the talent to show something very like factful even ifthey are not facts. That is a greater talent among many idiotic policians that manipulated poor masses of any developing nation. That is not valid on the west.

    Dayan De Silva,

“The UNP led government accepted the Geneva resolution with the same carelessness with which they entered into the ceasefire agreement with the LTTE in 2002.”
I am address you directly because it is you who wrote this worthless piece!

The LTTE grew weaker because of the Ceasefire agreement that they signed. It was during this period when Karuna defected as a direct result of the UNP covertly influencing Karuna with material things. The long lull in fighting, allowed the LTTE fighting force to switch focus on family issues and became lethargic. This was why, MR war machine was able to win the war along with the determination of India and the rest of the world to rid of the LTTE. So Dayan, it was not an irresponsible act to broke a ceasefire but an erudite one!

“There is now an attempt to portray this UNHRC resolution as a great diplomatic victory for Sri Lanka. But in reality, it was a great betrayal comparable to the Kandyan Convention of 1815.”

Here you go again! You had to drag in the Kandian Convention! The Kandian Convention was centred on Kandian Kingdom and not included the entire Sri Lanka. Though the Sinhala Buddhist chauvinist like you like to portray it as such, it was not!

The diplomatic victory of May 2009 that, you never miss any opportunity brag about, you claim as a great success is in fact paved the building blocks that snowballed into the present UNHRC Resolution. It was you who promised many things at the alter of swaying the arguments your way! All those promises that you and MR made publicly had never been honoured. There was not even an attempt to demonstrate any willingness! The LLRC was farce. Hence, it is you who are responsible for dragging Sri Lanka to the predicament she finds herself in now!

The Present government is on the right path. Establishing the truth is the basis for moving forward and this is what exactly what they are doing.

Whether SLFP dominates UNP or vice versa is not the issue. Since 1948, it started with UNP in power and after that from 1956 it was either SLFP or UNP in control.

Two rebellions from Sinhalese youths and one prolonged rebellion by Tamil youths were crushed by either SLFP or UNP in power. It is a pot telling kettle black story Ex President.

Are you for putting the country above party ? . Are you for putting Dharma before your self interests ?

Let’s leave the period before 2009 to a side, what great things you did and currently doing except whipping up Sinhala Buddhist Chauvinism from Vihares and temples which is against Buddha Dharma.

No human can escape KARMA. You may think otherwise because you believe you have done good only good things for the country.

Your most outdated views hold no value anymore and are unwelcome at this stage, since we are grateful and happy for all the freedom that we now enjoy, which you deprived us through your authoritarian style administration which only benefited few cronies who remain loyal to you, whilst the rest of us were subjected to jungle laws and had to battle it out to survive, virtually under very real threats of white van abductions or going missing or killed by use of brute force. Winning the war alone was not enough to claim success, but winning the peace was more important and you failed miserably in spite of the many golden opportunities that presented itself. Not learning from your mistakes, your cunning tactics to draw the Muslims population into strife was when you met your Waterloo, and thereafter you went crazy. Calling for elections two years earlier before due date, and the rest is history. In fact, you were sent packing within 6 months of those racial disturbances caused by those goons wrapped up in saffron robes whom you and your brother gave tacit support and succor.

Now that we are on course to put this country on the right path to promote amity amongst all of its citizens irrespective, and bring in the much needed prosperity and hope for all its people, not just a selected few cronies and relatives, we don’t need your two cents worth to upset the apple cart. Just fade away from the limelight at least with saving grace, and let more dynamic hands take over to guide the destiny of this country and its people well into the midst of the 21st century.

What we are seeing in Egnaligoda issue itself is ample proof of what illegitimate things certain factions of the armed forces have been up to and it was you and GR who are ultimately will be held responsible.

Abductions of children by certain Nave officers for ransom were also done under your watch and you and GR are responsible for that too.

Action of Certain military officers in the south also shows proof ( Rathpussllawa ) shows how certain factions in the military did behave like Animals . you and GR are the one who gave the orders for those killings too.

Don’t bring in the entire armed forces into this and tarnish their reputation. Its only a few Power hungry Money Hungry Military Guys who were involved in the hanous Crimes and they all followed their leaders who were you and GR.

Let the War Crimes tribunal come and pick the black Sheep away from the rest of the forces and clear the Military once and for all.

Finally they all inclusive of you and GR will have to answer to Justce….

For Heaven’s sake MR it is time you retired to your armchair, collected the pension and left the running of government to the people best qualified to do. If the tables had been turned at the last election Maithri and Ranil may have been white-vanned by now. The objectives of this government is the promoting ofdemocracy, reconciliation and respect for our armed forces. Unlike your term in office which was just the opposite. Re the armed forces, we have not forgotten that you and your brother, Gota, proposed to stop paying the salaries to the injured soldiers who were out of action. Your crocodile tears does not fool anybody.

Many who comment here are Tamils and they are time and again show how idiotic they are as they follwed their marauder sun goat.

When hussein said war crimes probe should be done by the government as it is a sovereign responsibilty and none of the seperatists criticized that because in his final briefing he said everything will happen according to the Geneva agreement. So his seperate utterences are for the benefit of Sirisena,s dog pack to defend him.

What is most appalling is that all the reports, observations, finding all are based on the Darusman report which it self says that its finding are not investigative and should not be taken as such.

Ban-ki-moon personnally guaranteed Sri Lanka that the contents of this report, which by the way is not a UN official report but one just to advice the SG, will not be used in any manner other than it was intended.

Those who blame MR for not doing enough for reconcilliation tap on their top and ask themselves if they gave him a chnce or didn’t they fall in line with Robert O blake and his clan and started in thier chorus of human rights and war crimes trying to send them to the Haig?

MR wants to come back to power at any cost.
Having tasted unbridled power, he feels lost – like all dictaters.
But the new regime is wary of his influence via the corrupt MPs and bureaucracy he left behind, and appears very slow in investigating the corrupt regime.
The cases for which evidence is ready should be vigorously pursued by the new AG and his corps.

A clean just regime is necessary for those who ran away, to come back to bury their bones in the motherland.

    Perspective

Lets assume 100,000 people died during the 30 year
war as a result of the war.
    So 100,000 deaths / 30 years = 3333.333 deaths per year
Therefore 3333.333 deaths per year / 365 days = 9.13242 deaths per day

Lets assume war did not end on May 19th 2009
Number of days from 19th May 2009 till date 11 Feb 2016 = 2460 days
So the number of lives saved (or people who did not die due to absence of war till date = 9.13242 deaths per day x 2460 days = 22465.75 lives saved

      Very interesting logic.

It’s about justice for the dead, not for those who live.

If the state didn’t escalate conflict after conflict, if there was no Sinhala-only language policy, if there were no riots in 1956, 58, 77, 81, 83, if the Jaffna library was not burnt down, if there were no JVP, if there were no smart ass patriots, ………………… if there were no crooks who hid behind Sinhala/Buddhism, if there were no impunity for war criminals, ……… there would not have been any unnatural death.

We could have saved a lot more lives only if we had wise leaders.

How can the Ambassador in Geneva act against to what the Government wants him to do?This statement of Rajapaksa is clear proof that the Ambassador has been Infact taking orders from the Ex President and not the present government.Infact such orders had unofficially gone to him through the Head of the UN Section of the Foreign Ministry who is a known agent of the Rajapaksa clan. Her brother, a Gota man, still holds an influential place in Defence Ministry. So how can government implant its policies with such people in high positions.?

The man who heads the Consular Section in the ministry is a known Namal R man having helped him to get millions of dollars from Gaddafi while he was Ambassador in Libya. The head of the Overseas Adminstration section is known Gota man. He was sent from Australia to Nigeria to facilitate the Avante Garde deal of Senadhipathy after Liyanage left. Mangala and Ranil and. Sirisena better watch their backs with people like these in their side. As this MR article shows the ex dictator is still been kept informed by these officials and also taking orders from him.

OMG.. going through the comments all I can see is mahinda haters.. nobody is making a sound argument against what he is saying. He may have lost the election but he is still a very influential person in the country. people still listens to what he says. I know I’m gonna get bashed for this as a sycophant of mahinda since CT is UNP dominated. But seriously, have you looked at what the government is doing recently? The amount of criticism they received because of CEPA. And now this war crimes bullshit. And what are they using to cover all this with? Arrest of yoshitha. Ekneligoda is gone now, so is thajudeen. And wasn’t there something called avent guard? I can’t even remember what that case with the account in Dubai was. Ane yako.. If yoshitha is found guilty, so be it. No big deal really. He’ll get whats coming for him. But please think of what is happening to the country in the meantime. You are calling mahinda a crook. Have you even thought of the amount the current government has amassed? No money in the treasury, the value of the rupee going down everyday, not single development project. Have you for once considered where the hell all the money went? Yeah, yeah.. mahinda has it all in his pockets.. typical CT response. But seriously, the previous government did manage to do all those mega development projects, even with all the corruption to boot. So why is this new government so damn bad at governing? I’m not even gonna talk of all those election promises. This country is in a sorry state people. If you can’t see that then you must be dumb, nothing else to say on the matter. Hate mahinda all you want, beat the shit out of his entire family for all i care but please open your eyes to what this stupid government is doing. They are selling us piece by piece.

Even Daughter Sira’s spin to the poor SLFP converts there, are not going to help even one aorta.

It is a disgusting and shameful act perpetrated by this long standing so called SLFP stalwart .

And the ultimate insult to the mums and dad in the South and Kurunagala district in particular , who sacrificed thousands and thousands of their loved children to liberate the land.

And make Sira become their ruler with Batalanada Ranil as the enforcer.

What the patriotic inhabitants must be aware of is, what is going to happen to the Armed Forces after these battled hardened Commanders are jailed and sacked?.

Will the stooges Batalanada Ranil will appoint to their positions save the Nation going forward?.

But the most critical aspects of this outright submission to the West through the UN, are the clauses 16, 18 & 20.

Although Batalanada PM has appointed most of the dimwits in Parliament to make our 21 Century Constitution . it is the Bedouin Prince who decides what should go in to it.

The Prince through his UN Office will ensure that all demands of not only the Vellala TNA, but also the demands of Suren Surendran, the Reverend and the Trans national Government of Thamil Eelaam are met in the new Constitution.

Unlike the.Kandy Convention 1815, Batalanad Constitution 2016 is will be irreversible even if his Uncle Junius does a Lazarus.

      Sumanasekara,

Your misplaced concerns for the welfare of just one group of Sri Lankans, namely the Sinhalese ‘Buddhists, is appalling.

Don’t you care about justice for the rest?
      Are they second class citizens?

My dear President, Country owe you so much for finishing racist war and looking after the countries interest .
If you are truly honest president you would have got great respect from the SL nation and years of respect.
What happen after 2010 is now history. I only have respect for Gotha since he is a true patriot and not a crook like you.
You fail as a father, helping sons to get back hands from major deals, encourage kids to get super luxury cars and use army resources to do racing, Namal stole colombo cricket grounds lights that worth, $US 2 million for Kandy night races and try to sell these lights on open market…etc..etc..
Namal had a extortion racket from wealthy business run by a ex army colonel, who is a CIO of a bank at present..
You allowed Basil to extort billions of money from road deals and in one instance, US expat that came to SL has to pay 40% kappam.
You allowed your wife to put her incompetent relations to petroleum ministry that cost billions to tax payers, allow Air Lanka to get raped by a a idiot brother in law that cost more billions..
Worst of all you denigrate the country by allowing drug dealers and rapists to go scot free..
    What all these means?

You are a crook sir and you should know that.

I am so sorry to say since I was a fan of you but you destroy the country and also destroyed our faith in you… Shame , Shame.
We are a southern Buddhist family that got history and how a southerner like you do these insidious crimes?

It is absurd arguing as to who wrote this as it is a well known fact that Rajapaksa cannot put two words of English together but that should not be taken as a weakness of his. He however claims to have led the victory in war against the Tamils. Considering the methods employed, the question is whether it was really a just war war or a series of blatant human rights abuses in the process leading to the defeat of the Tamil uprising. Bensen

I often wonder as to what is happening to Mahinda Rajapakse, the former president. Having been rejected by people twice, he appears to be doing or saying things to attract attention.

I saw photos of him with his “head down-legs up” yoga mode. Yesterday, I saw a photo of him “floating” on sea at Tangalle.” Usually, a desparate man does these. And today, I read that he has said “He will slit his throat”.

He broke 100,000 coconuts and said he will collect 1,000,000 signatures.

Psychologists agree that people who behave like this have a psychological problem leading to suicide.

Is there any volunteer to help him out?

I agree with Dr. Rajasingham Narendran that after the defeat of the LTTE Mahinda will act with magnanimity and grace. He will resettle and rehabilitate approximately Thamil 300,000 IDPs, give handouts to 89.000 war widows, release thousands of acres of land grabbed from Thamils back to the rightful owners, but he did nothing of that sort even tokenly. That explains why the Thamil voters voted en-masse against him at the presidential elections though he bragged he has redeemed the poor Thamil people from the clutches of the LTTE. Now the Thamil people can at least walk the streets without white vanned, without being shot like dogs and crease demons let loose against political opponents.
Mahinda or rather Dayan claims “Furthermore they have agreed to remove through administrative action members of the armed forces who are suspected of having committed war crimes but against whom there isn’t enough evidence to place before the war crimes.” If that is the case – there is no evidence – no one need fear that they will get convicted or sent to prison. They need not fear. Mahinda will go down in history as a self-fish, power hungry and a racist and communal politician. Finally I have one question to him. What happened to the following LTTE cadres who surrendered to the army at Vadduvaakal on May 18th evening and taken in CTB buses? The spouses, relatives and friends who were eyewitness were told they will be released after a short inquiry.
