The Political Tug-O-War In Sri Lanka Is Cockeyed & Absurd: Only Ranil Talks Of Economic Goals

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

Shyamon Jayasinghe

The electorate has to crowd around these useless and headless blokes and swell their meetings in order to collect the morsels of food and drink and dole-outs from the ill-gotten money of the political class that rules.

The discourse is: “dooshanaya! dooshanaya!dooshanaya!” What a bloody harangue! It bores me to anything short of death. Maitripala Sirisena has nothing to pronounce except cry, “dooshanaya.” He is the new swordsman against dooshanaya and he talks as though dooshanaya is something new in his four decades of political experience and, therefore, intolerable. The JVP cannot be a Third Force as long as it talks only about dooshanaya; it cannot offer any positive program for the economic upliftment of the country. Its vast energy wasted for the dooshanaya  critique only goes to help one of the  two competing mainstream parties to garner more votes against the other. This is the crisis of the JVP.

Of course, the main proponents of dooshanaya – the Rajapaksa clan – is also vociferously attacking the ruling party of this disease and comically trying to wash their hands off their ten year-old dooshanaya circus.

This is the outcome when a whole political class of a country walks and talks in a realm of reality different and irrelevant to the needs of the people. The electorate has to crowd around these useless and headless blokes and swell their meetings in order to collect the morsels of food and drink and dole-outs from the ill-gotten money of the political class.

The media simply follows the political class-looking for opportunities to survive. One never observes any printed or online media  that tries to balance the imbalance and put things in perspective. They take some side or the other in the dooshanaya Vs dooshanaya battle.

This is current Sri Lanka’s plight. The only political leader talking and walking the economy is Prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. I will not be doing my duty as a writer if I do not point out this exception  to the rule. The reason is that the exception, at least, should be mentioned in order to try and encourage a solitary example to spread at least to the level of a forming a critical mass.

I remember reading Nobel laureate in economics, Gunnar Myrdal, arguing that in Third World countries bribery and corruption acts as the lubricant to propel the economic engine in Third World countries.

Sri Lanka has  two key problems and dooshanaya isn’t one of them. The first issue is the urgent need to overhaul the economy and restructure it from its current profile of a debt economy where debt drives it, to an export-led economy. The second is reconciliation. Let’ talk her about economics.

We have to increase exports and, with that, direct foreign investment if we are to grow our economy. Economic growth means the increase in the capacity of an economy to produce goods and services within a specific period of time. It represents the longterm expansion of capacity of an economy and such expansion has been measured by the GNP.

It is only with such an expansion that the needs of the public can be met – the needs for employment, need for increase in the per capital income of the individual so that the latter can do his own, the need for public hard infrastructure and soft infrastructure, needs in public health, in education and, generally of the need for the betterment and prosperity of the average household. The rational economic cake must be big enough for the state to distribute its largesse equitably and in the right direction.

Economic growth will  stimulate government finances by enhancing tax revenues. This is how the public needs can be met. An economy snowballs this way into higher and higher growth as capital accumulates both in the treasury of the government and the coffers of the private entrepreneur. It is encouraging to hear the Finance Minister labelling his budges as the entrepreneurs’ budget. Entrepreneurs are the agents that drive an economy; not beggars. Not political thugs

Here, in Australia, the economy has grown considerably and successively over the last twenty-five years and see what amount of public needs are being met! How the disabled and the vulnerable in society are cared for! In Scandinavian countries the situation is even better. The whole Western World is ahead because of economic growth. Is there any point demanding a government to do anything for the people when the national economy-cake is so small? In these Western lands it is the private sector that has been the active dynamo of growth. Profit incentives act as the primary motivating force.

Successive governments since 1956 ruined the path of private enterprise by taking over every business enterprise that came their way. The SLFP has been the principal offender having been the party that sucked into a creed of populism. Keep giving free as much as possible -everything under the sun. That everything must be budgeted for isn’t the concern. Take-over and give. Mrs B famously said she would bring rice from even the moon and distribute free to the people. We used to go to the co-op, carrying our bags and collect free rice. People began believing that any government is possessed of a magic money-delivering kapruka or tree to give very dash thing fee like this. Hence, demanding and protesting is the only thing for the public to do.

The country ran broke and this is how the debt economy was born. It is critical for our nation’s survival to rectify this situation and revolutionise the country’s economy. The introduction of liberalised trading and the open economy in 1977 was one of our best economic decisions of our recent past. So were the Free Trade Zones to attract foreign direct investment-done at the same time.

One must applaud our Prime Minister for trying to reconnect with that path. Good signs are already showing. Foreign direct investment is impressive. Debt management and fiscal management is improving and the economy is slowly looking up. PM goes all over the world on economic missions with little gratitude from even the President  who now says he will take over the running of the economy! Oh my God! What is to come? I see Maitri waving at crowds with the typical old SLFP populism- promising price cuts and  tax cuts at his will. Like bringing rice from the moon. If tax cuts are made, the lost revenue must be found to avoid a gap. On the other hand, the President thinks the money will “just flow down.”

A few Bodhi Poojas will do the job-he probably thinks.

      Ah! Shyamon,

You have outdone yourself this time! …………I tried, but unable to find a single fault in what ye have written ………we Lankans are all good at finding fault/criticising – myself included :)) – but rarely good at writing something positive – suggesting/proposing a blueprint for the future direction we must take ………….

But my Lankan genes are raring to go to vent out my natural Lankan instincts …………. attack, attack, attack…………….

So, here I go ………… you old coot, what do you know about economics; living in the land of inbred convicts? You are nothing but a Ranil ass-licker …..a UNP apologist! If you are so patriotic why did you escape and didn’t have the gratitude to accept the ride kindly offered by Gota in his white-van …. he may not have had a fancy ride but what he had he kindly offered; how arrogant of you to refuse? ……… I’ll add some more later when I can think-up more …………. others feel free to add……….

      And for an encore …………bond-scam, bond-scam, bond-scam, bond-scam, bond-scam

Now I’m off on my vacation ……… shall look in later to see what wonders that would’ve done for the good ol’ Economy…………….. :))

Dear Mr Fernado ( surname Fernando presume Italian & German decent)
Regarding you colorful description of Australians as “inbred convicts” I would inclined to believe Aussies are more comfortable with you description of them rather than been start the proud race a ROYL QUEEN BEEN ROGERD BY A LION OR BY A DEPORTED INDIAN PRINCE. I leave you to decide which linage you want on your family tree.

          Hi Len,

Never seen you around before ………….anyway………..

Nimal Fernando is just a common Lankan name I picked for the forum ………like John Doe ………….

          l’existence précède l’essence

In the absence of God man’s existence precedes his essence………sooo ……..each one is free to define his own essence………name too…….

I think I made a mistake ……….In hindsight I would have picked Lacille Fernando or Digby De Silva or Barnaby Rodrigo Sr the 3rd ….. sounds more sophisticated …… or Sextus Perera and named my house Sexville……….

please don’t compare SJ with the dunce DJ the nut job and idiot who talks through his a…..What a pleasure to read articles written by SJ which are intellectual and knowledgeable and make sense. Joker DJ is so bloated with gas that the joker cannot write one sentence that is rational or meaningful. I have stopped reading shithole stuff from DJ ever since the guy was kicked out by his crooked boss MR and now trying his best to get a position – the poor joker tried to get a job with RW who would not have a bar of him. Hence the reason for the anti RW sentiments which reek of garbage.

Mr. Shyamon Jayasinghe: Ranil the UNP leader, RAVI the LIAR deputy Leader, Food not Gang are all PALHORU. Ranil began destroying agriculture since 1994. HE was asking people not to grow paddy, onion, chillie like things because of fertilizer, the cost of production is high. Yet australia send us PArippu even though they do not eat. Sri lanka’s Wheat flour consumption is threefold event though western start eating rice because wheat is allergic to some. You are talking about village level election. do you have party politics at the municipal council level. I don’t think we need it. Here I do not see. JVP is used at the grass root level at the village level. SLFP, U”NP and SLPP are used at that level give half of the arrack bottle, Packet of rice, sil redi, and in case of Ranil mostly lies that will never come into action. I heard Mangala Prepared a budget but the he does not have any money except what the MCC/IMF gave him to complete the Land control changes (in the west agricultural lands are prohibited to use in residential or industrial buildings but sri lanka will be able to), Harbour logistics to foreign take overs etc., On the other hand, PTL is willing to fund the budget if they are released from prosecution.

What you are writing about Ranil is all lies. Since the CENTRAL BANK robbery, 50% of the sri lankan investment was withdrawn. this year’s economic growth is Zero. In order to earn the higher interest rate that was offered to PTL, the govt had to increase the taxes,. this year’s extra collection will be close RS ONE TRILLION. Remember Ranil was giving ONE MIIlLION JOBS prior to last election. Instead sri lanka has lost about HALF A MILLION JOBS. Sri lanka is boasting that it is an educated country. Indian visotr are coming to do menial jobs in srilanka yet Ranil wants to sign ETCA and get more workers. in the educated country 25,000 foreign professionals are working. See the SAITM problem they cannot solve even after years now ?.Ranil for the last three years, I heard, had presented four economic plans. The last one looks very much one written from an air conditioned room from a far away country. On the other hand, Mangala changed the land control, act, harbour terminals will be giving to foreigners. Mattala, I heard, is already signed the agreement but they are discussing. KKS will be a foreign harbour At least you know sri lanka’s wheat flour is thrice the previous what was during the previous govt while people think rice and coconut are imported food. does australia import wheat and beef ? why sri lanka ?

Over ten years ago I visited a Factory in Awissawella. They produced barb wire. It had about 80 workers who lived in small dormitory like rooms behind the main building. All of them were Indians expect One guy. A Muslim translator who spoke Tamil and Sinhala.

This was either in 2004 or 05. It was shock to see Indians in the countryside. Indian and Arab settlements in Lanka have been going on for a long time.

The Indians in the advertising and marketing industries also appear to be happy to raise their children in the country.

Mr. Shynon: You seem to be allergic to this word “Dooshanaya”. Of course, the people of Sri Lanka are well aware of all the environment and the circumstances that were connected with that adage named “Development” that which you are now presenting to us as “Economic Development” mainly because, according to you, ONLY Mr. Ranil W -the PM speaks of it. We have completely lost our balance and gone hysterical , so much so, the people in this country know and talk of “Dooshanaya” as one and the ONLY outcome of “Development”. If you cared even to know from media and other sources what those Commissions, including “Bond Robbery” have found, I believe you too would go hysterical and would never speak of this word “Development” even connected with “Economic Development”. There is a reason for your hero PM to speak of “Economic Development”, that being the only source for “Dooshanaya” . He, the PM has introduced a NEW FACE to this “Dooshanaya” by introducing new Legislation and in certain cases “Amending” the existing laws and regulations in order to LEGALIZE the “Dooshanaya”. Do I have to tell you what he did with that new Foreign Exchange Act No 12 of 2017 and the recent Gazette Notice giving cover to “Dooshana Officials” who can claim “Immunity” on the basis of: “I acted with best of intentions” even though such actions CONTRAVENE the Laws. So, your justification of “Economic Development” FAILS, because in Sri Lankan terms it is a “Poison Pill” wrapped in sweet dreams of heavenly features that never reach the average people, but a gang of elite political crooks .

Ranil is not an economist. HE is wanna be Intellectual. Otherwise, he is so arrogant, dictatorial and very narcisstic. His economic agenda is western Neoliberal economic agenda which destroyes small countries. At present they are busy destroying former russian and estern european republics. Read Globalresearch.ca and articles about Estonia, LAtvia, IReland. Searchunder Neoliberalism. NATO agenda is Neoliberalism, Capitalism and privileges of the west. Ranil is also doing the same agenda. CBK, Ranil, Mangala are all participant of the program.

Ranil and Mangala are not fathers or Husbands. Meaning they are incapable of long-term thinking. The ultimate skill of a man is raising a family. This is his legacy. In Europe only 40% of men who ever lived manged to have children. Over 80 % Women on the other hand have children.

“The JVP cannot be a Third Force as long as it talks only about dooshanaya; it cannot offer any positive program for the economic upliftment of the country”

Corruption alone is not the only problem.

The JVP by tradition and practice is being limited by its choice of new ideas. It refuses to come out of it politically convenient and secure position, afraid of being branded a traitor to the cause. Its parochial understanding of economics, development, political economy, international trade, politics seems confined to just sloganeering.

Whether any of the politburo members including AKD understand the need to plan for expanding/growing economy, baking a larger national cake in order to share large proportion of it among larger population.

How much does JVP understand about international trade is another sticking point. Is the party still confused between self sufficiency and import substitution? Does it still believe in man power rather than machine power?

Does JVP seriously believe in restructuring the state? I don’t think so as it is the state gives dictatorial powers to the rulers. The JVP will love absolute power.

RE; Only Ranil Talks about Economic Goals

    Why?

Because the others are clueless,, or only want to take on commissions , irrespective of the economic and social benefits and outcomes..

The former crooks are still are at large and getting fatter, and the low IQ populace is confused and clueless as well.

The Gamarala wants to be Gamarala again.Crooks like the status quo.

No wonder the average IQ of the Paras, 79, has an impact.

Dr Ranil talking Economics …And doing a fantastic job HaHaHaHaa
    How cool..
Will Mr Jayasinghe and the NGO Associates nominate Dr Ranil for a Noble Prize ?…
I mean , seriously he has done some revolutionary things in Economics.
Get the Monetary System under his Arm . Import his mate from Singapore And get the mate to empty the tills of all the Government Controlled Banks and Statutory Organizations in one Hit…
And transfer it into Private Hands…
In fact last years Noble Prize was awarded to a bloke who said the Economists should think about the poor and the underprivileged before allocating resources.
Isn’t Dr Ranil doing it in a a novel way too ,although in reverse , thinking about the Rich and transferring the Resources and Life savings of our peasants to the Rich…

In a TV discussion, someone asked Harsha the economic maestro of this government ‘How they are going to find money to implement their plans’. His response was ‘When we stop corruption, there will be more than enough money to do the work’. Instead of putting halt to corruption, this government is doing it in a massive scale beating ‘Rajapakse Regimaya’. Ranil and MY3 have broken all the election promises they gave. For everything that goes wrong people have got used to say ‘Yahapalanaya’ in a sarcastic way. Of course a guy who has encroached into land of native people do not hear these things.

Shyamon Jayasinga keeps lying to CT readers without shame and fear. I think all these UNP henchmen are following their leader RanilW when it comes to lying.
First of all, RanilW is not an economist; he doesn’t have even the OL knowledge of economics. However, he has learnt all crafty and cunning political tricks from his uncle JRJ. That’s all.
If RanilW continues to be the PM till 2020, Sri Lankans will have to look for a candidate like Duterte (the current no-nonsense Philippine President) for the next presidential election. The Philippines had been a slavish Western ally till Dutarte came to power, but by that time the country had already become useless.
This LG election is an acid test!

    Shyamon suffering from amnesia!!

Who shouted the harangue “dooshanaya” to the death? Isn’t it the gang led by Ranil and the cohorts like you to garb power in 2015? Did you forget all the stuff you talk now about expanding the economy etc during 2014/15 or is this some new found wisdom? Or is it because Ranil has fallen on his own sword of “dooshanaya”? You or other apologists of Ranil/majarapalanaya cannot fool the readers.

Would you be courageous enough to list comparative economic measures (GDP growth, FC Reserves, per capita income, inflation, FDI, exchange rates, debt to GDP ratio, employment growth etc) between the last 3 years under Ranil’s economic wizadry and previous govt under the ” bayiya” from Giruva Pattu?

Brothers and Sisters of Mother Lanka, take a note, majority of the comments expressed here reflects the state of our country, In the US few of the senators and congressmen are behind bars, In US few leaders including ministers were forced to resign, same in Brazil,Italy and even in Pakistan Sherif and Benazir had spend some time in prison, A country like India where nothing much expected from the norm, Jaya and Karuna were found guilty and now Lalu is behind bars, When was the last time a corrupt lankan politician had been served with Justice???? A proven murderer, political leader who had swindled funds, gangsters who were found guilty by courts are free at will and still having the public support to be elected, Just look at the hero welcome given to our Uva Chief surrounded by????, Do I have to say more, the elected are the most loved ones and well supported by our so called literate voting public, of course there are freebies to throw during elections and offer religion/language as vital issues,Only a miracle can save our Mother lanka that is If you believe in one. Sorry I do not.

With all the resources we had since the 1970s, keeping agriculture/fishing…etc as a basic foundation and focusing on sectors in addition to garments/apparel like IT (we could have been a mini Bangalore/Hub by now), MEDICAL TOURISM ( after all it is our doctors who are doing excellent jobs abroad, quite a lot of them had expertise and qualifications and were serving in Lanka then),EDUCATION (by way of associating with foreign universities), TOURISM/HOSPITALITY, BANKING/FINANCE and some things which are unique in promoting ARTS/CRAFT/PRECIOUS STONES/CINEMA/CULTURE could have put Lanka in a position beyond Singapore/Korea.We had the resources, ability to develop infrastructure, education, higher literacy, knowledge of English and better living condition compared to India/Singapore/Malaysia who were struggling with country/ethnic divisions then. But our politicians have been busy in promoting religious/cultural/language division with ample support of the public, Long Live Lanka, Good Luck to all citizens.

Said SHYMAN to Paiyman Yes Sir can I bend low?
Of course you can said Paiyman but turn around and lift your gown
    Thus entered Paiyman into SHYMAN

Shyamon Jayasinghe: You have adopted the way bond Scam Ranil presents things. If you remember, there was a guy called CHANDRA ANAGIRATHNE. He was used to write comedy articles the way you have written. Do you think, Ranil and Chandra anagirathne both are related. On the other hand, you have acknowledged that JVP is going to be a force and they need to change in order to adopt to the needs of Sri lanka. It is like China, theory is not the most important how it is applied to the present world.

Very well written. You have identified the real crisis in Sri Lanka. Priority is the economy but not a single political leader highlights that. The priorities are racism, language, religion and so on. I agree Ranil is the only competent leader this country has. Others should be burnt

Shyamon the bum sucker and boot licker of his grate hero” the PM” – the biggest ass…e and the clow.. in the country – close upon three decade he was a grate looser – manage to stay at the helm of his loosing WhooNP with the help of his Royal suckers – Now Shyamon you think this champion looser is ” The only political leader talking and walking the economy ” Phooo!!!! I do not want to repeat what other commenters had written about his ability to manage the economy of the country – one thing I should add is – for me , he is a Montessori politician – and most of the time act and talk like a ignorant clown – Shyamon you also say ” I will not be doing my duty as a writer if I do not point out this exception to the rule” – how can a boot licker like you become a independent writer in the first place – you are an interdependent writer -why you do not come to Sri Lanka – you can really suck – may be Mr R will appoint you to Sri Lankan embassy in Aussis as a kitchen assistant cum “Dorbey” to wash dirty plates and cloths – since you have gathered lot of experience in those fields
