The Story Of A Geriatric Puzzle

By Mahesan Niranjan

Prof. Mahesan Niranjan

Prof. Mahesan Niranjan

At the famous pub in Bridgetown UK yesterday, my regular drinking partner, the Sri Lankan Tamil fellow Sivapuranam Thevaram and I were setting puzzles to each other. It was my turn first and I asked him a question I had remembered from back in 1985, around the time the one pound paper note in the UK was replaced by a coin:

“What is the similarity between Margaret Thatcher and a pound coin?”

Even decades after her premiership ended, some of us have the habit of regularly joking about the Iron Lady because we are certain that all modern evils around us in the United Kingdom can be traced back to her. It is not just the damage she did, but her legacy of a Labour government implementing her policies gives us extreme indigestion.

Thevaram gave me the correct answer:

“It is thick, made of brass and thinks itself sovereign!”

“Ok, my turn now,” Thevaram continued after a sip of Peroni:

“What is the similarity between Elizabeth Windsor and Tricornermountainge Sampath?”

SampanthanNow, not everyone reading this will know who the two subjects in the above question are. Did I say “subject?” I have already sinned, for the lady in the question is no subject. The rest of us are, and hers! Elizabeth is the Queen of the United Kingdom and I regard her with respect, for only a few years ago I had sworn allegiance to her in exchange for citizenship here. Not just to Her, I might add, to her Heirs and Successors, too. That, mind you, is Charlie, William and little George who wasn’t even born when the above contract was agreed. My Oath was duly witnessed by a lawyer whose focus of attention throughout the proceedings was on the fiver he charged for making it official.

The second character in the question is the Leader of the Opposition in the Sri Lankan parliament. He is also the leader of the Tamil National Alliance, and readers who can recognize naming conventions in Sri Lanka will immediately suspect the name — Tricornermountainge Sampath — doesn’t sound much like Tamil. True. I have morphed his name to reflect his current political position in which, while holding that Office, he is indeed a firm supporter of the present government. Since he leads the opposition for the whole of Sri Lanka, statistics requires the adoption of a name that fits with the convention of the majority, hence the suffix “-ge” attached to the name of the town he originates from.

Her Majesty the Queen turned 90 a few days ago. Sampath is rather close. So I thought that might well be the similarity Thevaram was looking for and said:

“Yeah, I know, they are both long past retiring age, yet continue to hold office.”

Now, that answer relates to a particular bugbear Thevaram and I share. We are both teachers at universities with our retirement age within our lines of sight, but as a moving goalpost. “Sixty five” says the contract we signed, “sixty-seven” is an amendment imposed a few years back, “you can ask to continue beyond that” came the next rule and “if asked, we have to let them continue” is how management interprets it. So now Faculty Boards in universities run the risk of looking like the British TV programme Dad’s Army, whereas it was far more fun and purposeful when they were more in tune with Blackadder.

Several novel ideas Thevaram himself has proposed during early days in his career (for example, give a student a random grade and suggest: “A predicted grade of 52% has been awarded to you.

If you think you can do better, take this exam.”), are very difficult to push through a faculty of old codgers who are long past their prime.

“Well done!” said Thevaram, cheering me on the answer, and went on to ask the second part of the question.

“Now tell me, what is the difference between the two?”

That was a tough one, you will agree. Sure, there are obvious differences such as gender, but that’s not the sort of question my drinking partner will ask. After scratching my head a bit, I gave up.

“OK then, what is the difference between Lizi and Sampath?”

“It is the purpose, machan (buddy), purpose!” he said, not only repeating the word, but also putting his glass down with a slightly more force than usual to gain emphasis.

Her Majesty the Queen’s purpose is rather clear to any of her subjects. By convention, if she were to take retirement, the next in line to the throne will be her offspring Charles. Now, there is only one person in the entire kingdom who thinks Charles is eminently suitable for the job – Charles himself. Hence the Regina and her subjects have an unwritten agreement that she shall stay, and be loved and thanked for staying on. We her subjects are extremely polite to her and she in turn plays her part by addressing us just twice every year on television, saying very nice things that have been scripted by the elected folks.

So, when her subjects sing “God save the Queen,” they really mean it.

Sampath, on the other hand, hit the headlines recently for showing exactly the opposite trait – that of extreme arrogance. To understand this, we need some context.

Back in our country, there was a war — a long running war that cost us a great deal. We can theorize about the causes of it, blame it on the “other side” and can exercise our freedom to hero-worship whoever supposedly represented “our side”. Yet we can all agree on one thing.

That war is over.

We, the people living in Sri Lanka and those travelling there, do not see anyone fighting; we do not hear the sound of guns, blasting bombs and the wailing of the aftermath; we do not smell burning sulphur, and with high probability our limbs remain attached to the main.

That is seven years of peace. Be warned! We will be judged not by our collective and individual guilt of the past, but by our performance in these last seven years of peace.
And during these seven years, there remain locked up in our prisons some two hundred of our citizens for their alleged role during those sad days of war. Supposedly they are in various stages of processing of the evidence against them. Some have never been charged.

Some have been sentenced to serve long terms on the basis of confessions they signed as the only evidence. Their signatures are not entirely perfect, judges observed. Imagine what your own signature will look like should you suspend yourself upside down by your feet, connect yourself to a car battery and apply some chilli powder to your private parts. Under such experimental conditions, I bet you will not be able to sign like what appears on the back of your credit card. So, our legal system has allowed for some error tolerance when serving upon those who committed horrible crimes the punishments they deserve, right? It is entirely possible, is it not, that our recently-emancipated Tamil nationalist — the Chief Minister of the Northern Province — himself might have been the presiding judge in some of these cases? He was just doing his job, no?

Some of these people held behind bars have recently been released in the interest of goodwill that followed the regime change of a year and a bit ago. A small group of them recently went to meet Tricornermountainge Sampath seeking help in securing the release of those still held in prison. One has taken advantage of recent technological advances and recorded the meeting with a hidden camera. Thevaram opened his newly acquired Amazon Fire device and played me the video from newsfirst.lk.

Sampath’s dialogue with them is shocking. He displays extreme arrogance in the way he speaks to them, making dismissive comments while continuing to read his newspaper:

“The key is not in my hand,” the defence Sampath spurts from behind the newspaper sounds so much like coming out of an orifice below his belt. Who would have thought a newspaper in Sri Lanka could be so very absorbing?

Now, we might all easily agree that the Tamil youth taking up arms was a silly idea. It was never going to achieve their stated goals and its pursuit brought out the worst on all sides. Some horrible crimes were committed in the process that culminated in the massacre we saw at Mullivaikkaal.

But what of those who instigated the youth to take up arms? Do we not remember Tricornermountainge Sampath himself standing shoulder to shoulder with his mates from the Tamil United Liberation Front in the Seventies, proclaiming that a separate country in the north and east of Sri Lanka can be established? Did he not have a part in encouraging the youth with the illusion that this can be achieved with the help of India, just the same way it happened in Bagladesh? Did he not contribute towards the emotional wave of the Seventies that took the Tamil people through thirty years of suffering?

We as a society find it acceptable that the instigators, fund-raisers and brutal commanders of a rebellion may live in comfort because they switched their hats with perfect timing. Yet we have locked up a small number of our citizens who most likely played minor roles in that process of destruction: the butchers, bakers and candlestick-makers of the show, those who were in the wrong place at the wrong time or those who didn’t have rich relatives overseas to bribe them out of captivity.

Is it that we do not care because they are from the bottom stratum of the hierarchical society we are? Should we not, now, in the interest of decency, collectively demand that their cases be reviewed in open court?

The video has a clear message: Tricornermountainge Sampath should go. He has nothing further to contribute. His continued time in office has no purpose.

He needs his remaining years to stay quietly and repent his role in the failed experiment that brought upon those whom he claims to represent unimaginable misery. We should wish him good health so he may have a chance to reflect.

Queen Elizabeth the Second, however, should stay. Her continued time in office has a purpose.

“Happy birthday, Ma’am,” Thevaram and I raised our glasses to mark Her Majesty’s 90th birthday in the Bridgetown pub.

An excellent judgement! It is this sheer arrogance that made tricornermountainge Sampath to accept the opposition leader position when he is not qualified in numbers as well as in skills. He should have sat on the opposite side of the table as a leader only during the formulation of the new constitution as a legitimate deal maker. I demanded the very same from an Australasian so called Tamil political organiser of the yester years in a public meeting of Tamils convened by him in the year 2011, to set up a new morphed organisation under the pretext of facilitating the tamil revival after Mullivaikal at a faster pace instead of progressing at a snail speed. I told him bluntly that he should step down and leave it to the Tamil people who are the best judges of their destiny. He arrogantly defied claiming that he represents a worldwide Tamil organisation (that never had a democratic foundation) and this demand can be considered and a decision made only at that level. While I am not condemning the youths who took up arms in N&E as I am well aware of our past but have nothing but contempt for these slippery reptiles who exploited the Tamil misery for their political survival. The situation reminded me of poet Kannadasan’s song:-
    1. Paramasivan kazhuthil irunthu pambu kettathu-
Garuda soukhyama? Yaarum irukkum idathil irunthu kondal ,
    Yellam soukhyame. Garudan cjonnathu,
    Athil artham ullathu.
1.The snake from the neck of lord Shiva asked,
“Oh Garuda , are you Ok?. If all people stay ,
In the place that they should stay , every one is Ok, said Garuda
    There is a meaning there.

I wish the Tamil Garudas world over will open their eyes & demand that the time is now;Tamil Pambus GO!
Kudos for the ex prisoners who bravely videoed and published the event.

Please bear with me for I am not clever as you are. In fact I am bit thick.

Would you like to fill his shoes as opposition leader?

I have few questions and hope you would educate me by answering my simple questions.

      Why Trinco Sam was arrogant?

What sort of qualification do you expected from a person to be appointed to the office of opposition leader?

Why do you think he is ineligible to decorate the office of Opposition Leader?

What are the parliamentary rules that govern the appointment of opposition leader?

” I told him bluntly that he should step down and leave it to the Tamil people who are the best judges of their destiny.”

      Why?

I am sorry I maybe wrong, I remember him being elected to Parliament on 16 Aug 2015 just over. Actually he was elected by voters, in a democratic process which is universally known as elections.

Would you ask your “Prime Minister” in exile also to resign and stay away from his parliament?

Rarely is there full agreement on any political issue.

I am happy that Sambanthan is the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.

However, we must give enough ear to Rajapaksa supporters (not to the crooks who were the “leaders”) to ensure that they feel no need to become some sort of insurgents.

            Thanks, trunket.

There ARE some people wh believe strongly that the SLFP embodies what is most valuable in social thinking, and that the SLFP is best represented today by the Mahinda wing. Neither of us believes so, but those guys also have a right to live their lives.

I know you to be a decent person, and I do take your advice about reading the insightful books, but the reference you give me is too vague, I’m afraid.

I have painstakingly gone through the monotonous presentation, until I was halted by:

‘Now, we might all easily agree that the Tamil youth taking up arms was a silly idea. It was never going to achieve their stated goals and its pursuit brought out the worst on all sides’.

    This hindsight is ingenious.

However, the question, ‘what of those who instigated the youth to take up arms?’, is not.

I am not much into politics; have never been. But, in my light reading and shallow understanding, this accusation of ‘instigation’ sets a new territory.

If any Tamil politician had declared that a separate state in the north and east of Sri Lanka can be established, honestly, I had missed that in my slumber.

I want to believe what Prof. Mahesan Niranjan had known and said. I have no choice, do I? Wait. Let me find out the evidence I had missed or not fully grasped, from him. I am sure he’d oblige!

      Nathan,

Are you saying the TULF leaders did not thunder about ‘Tamil eelam’ and the need for youths to work for it, in the mid 1970’s, including at the general elections in 1977?

I saw it all, even as a boy who was not yet 10, I spoke in such meetings, arguing that Tamil youths were working hard for the people’s ‘liberation’ and since the youths were supporting the TULF, the people at large should also vote for the TULF.

I don’t follow Tamil media these days, so I must thank Niranjan for bringing this video to our attention.

On the Tamil prisoner issue, I have been asking the TNA to start a public agitation campaign as there have been too many promises, too many ‘give us another two weeks’ delaying tactics. It is time for Sampanthan to retire gracefully and retain any respect the public had for him. If he overstays and treats the unfortunate youth as badly as in the video, he will lose support from the people fast, and will become as irrelevant as Anandasangaree.

Agnos, Let me see if I can explain my stand to you.

I wish you to bear in mind that I am not much into politics and have never been.

I never looked at any video. I don’t know what was in it.

I read the article. I understood to the best of my ability what was stated there.

I could not see from where the allegation ‘those who instigated the youth to take up arms’ was coming. If Prof. Mahesan Niranjan had the answer, he had not provided that in his write-up.

I wish to be left out of politics.

        Thank you.

      Agnos
Sampanthan’s politics has been only as dubious as that of the FP/TULF/TNA. He is there as leader because, besides his wish to be, the TNA has no workable option.
He hoped that the retired SC judge will be a good successor. He was sadly wrong. He likes Sumanthiran to take over. But there is a strong lobby against Sumanthiran in the North.

Having seen how the FP tradition has fared over 65+ years, It was only in its first decade it showed some promise.
You should read NR Rajavarothiam’s “Panagoda Days” if you could lay your hands on a copy. I do not agree with his political views, but he is brutally honest in his record of events at the Panagoda detention camp 1961. His concern for the future of he FP, especially in the context of the way its inner circle worked, tragically came true.
Amirthaligam was the worst leader imaginable for the FP. He got rid of any potential rival.

Sampanthan, a very successful lawyer in his home town, would not have risen to the position he holds if not for the LTTE’s murder of TULF leaders in Colombo.

The FP, like the UNP, lacks people with leadership quality.
Sampanthan, somewhat like RW, is the known evil for both friend and enemy.

Good points, Sekara. But what about Mavai Senathirajah? I recall that he was elevated to party president. So he, assisted by Sumanthiran, should be able to handle it? Sampanthan needs to stay on if there will be constitutional changes quickly; a leadership change at this stage may be counter productive. But there should be clear succession planning and gradual transfer of responsibilities.

        • 1
          0

When Senathirajah was elected leader two years ago, he gave an acceptance speech. If you had been there, you probably will remember hearing most of it back in your childhood days on TULF platforms. Maavai has no new ideas.

    Dear Prof. Mahesan Niranjan,

The next time your friend Sivapuranam Thevaram and you meet at the “famous pub in Bridgetown UK” could you please discuss all the confusion your brother, Nirmalan and you cause owing to the similarity of your names. I’ve never met you, but on April 23, 2016 at 8:35 pm, I have made truly heroic efforts to explain that you are two different guys.

    https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/the-federal-party-gain-loss-of-the-moral-high-ground/comment-page-1/#comment-1960199

I’m hoping to meet Nirmalan in your old school (on the 9th of May) which you will identify as being cognate with the school whose photograph appears here:

    https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/the-whited-thomian-sepulchres-the-pharisees-who-cheat/

Perhaps during the following week you could discuss the said schools. I’m also wondering whether a guy who knows not one word of your strange mother tongue should visit the school your mother taught in the following day.

I’m afraid that you will say that you have never been asked such an impertinent question, and the matter will end there. But let me hope that your friend Thevaram will take a kindlier view of the tasks being assigned you.

At first reading I didn’t go the the video. When I did, it was all in Tamil which I don’t understand at all, but the arrogance in the body language came through. Mine may not be avery insightful comment, but I thought I should respond to you.

Why don’t you also ask about Trincomalle Sampanthan about the TNA not condemning the
murders of many distinguished tamils, the ejection of our people from Jaffna to achieve ethnic cleansing, Massacre in Mosques etc. The TNA and Sampanthan have been collaborators of the LTTE. What has befallen the tamils is what they have given to their own oppressed castes. It is amazing that Sampanthan even allowed the Tamil detainee boys to sit and talk to him. The ITAK leaders of yore never allowed the low castes to even enter their houses. So he is an improvement on them. But he probably does not want to look at these people directly as he will get tainted/polluted. He has to put put on those airs of a கொம்பாபிள்ளை

Hopefully you would read my previous comment before commenting. I have no need to reply your diatribe if you have not read through my comment properly. But ignorance should be enlightened. Sampanthan cannot be the opposition leader of SriLanka since he doesn’t have the numbers unlike Mr Amirthalingam who had it in 1977. Read through the manifesto2015 of TNA & you will realise that Sampanthan will not fit into the role. He was elected by the majority of the electorate he represent to find solutions for Tamil grievance within a united SriLanka. Year 2015 election was all about good governance and Tamil question was conveniently never addressed. He was assigned the position of opposition leader by a convoluted design to suit the propaganda machinery of the Sinhala governance. It is something akin to GLPeiris’s devious interpretation of the voting pattern of the member countries of the UN during the adoption of Resolution 2014 requiring the UNHCR to undertake a ‘Comprehensive Investigation”. According to his twisted logic to the masses SriLanka won by one, if the 12 abstentions are considered. I have also stated that Sampanthar should occupy as a leader on the opposite side of the table in the making of the new constitution. I have absolutely no qualm in accepting the people’s verdict. Likewise I accept Rudrakumaran of TGTE. These are all well within the political expression of Tamil people.
When did sambanthar become an Austalasian? I referred to one Mr Sabesan who was the Australasian Coordinator of the LTTE’s Political wing during the heydays. Being a member of the Tamil diaspora I am well aware these so called political representatives did nothing to campaign about the political grievance of the tamil people globally except to glorify the armed resurrection and mainly focused on staging Maveerar Naal & street protests. They hardly listened to good counselling. This criticism should not be taken against those who fought with their lives back at home for believing what they felt is “Just” be it right or wrong in the worldview. That is something the Tamil people of SriLanka will pass a verdict on in the near future. As far as Sampanthar is concerned I agree with Agnos that he should retire if he has to retain the respect people have before becoming a white elephant. The video is testimony for this statement of mine.

    Prof. Mahesan Niranjan

“Some of these people held behind bars have recently been released in the interest of goodwill that followed the regime change of a year and a bit ago. A small group of them recently went to meet Tricornermountainge Sampath seeking help in securing the release of those still held in prison. One has taken advantage of recent technological advances and recorded the meeting with a hidden camera. Thevaram opened his newly acquired Amazon Fire device and played me the video from newsfirst.lk.”

“Sampath’s dialogue with them is shocking. He displays extreme arrogance in the way he speaks to them, making dismissive comments while continuing to read his newspaper:”

“The key is not in my hand,” the defence Sampath spurts from behind the newspaper sounds so much like coming out of an orifice below his belt. Who would have thought a newspaper in Sri Lanka could be so very absorbing?”

    Thanks. Very revealing.

    1. Just Curious, is Tricornermountainge Sampath Vellahala?

“But what of those who instigated the youth to take up arms? Do we not remember Tricornermountainge Sampath himself standing shoulder to shoulder with his mates from the Tamil United Liberation Front in the Seventies, proclaiming that a separate country in the north and east of Sri Lanka can be established? “

    2. Just Curious, was it a plan for the continuation of the Vellahala Castism and Racism in the new Tamil Eeelam, the New Tamil Vellhala Eeelam?

“Is it that we do not care because they are from the bottom stratum of the hierarchical society we are? Should we not, now, in the interest of decency, collectively demand that their cases be reviewed in open court?”

    3. Have you heard about the Vellahala Castism and racism? The low caste Tamils are expendable. After all they are not allowed to pray to the Vellahala Gods in the temple and need to get out of the way, when the Vellahala passers by…

Isn’t this what you are seeing here now?

“The video has a clear message: Tricornermountainge Sampath should go. He has nothing further to contribute. His continued time in office has no purpose.”

Vellahalas do not care for the non-Vellahalas. Is there any surprise here?

5.. “Queen Elizabeth the Second, however, should stay. Her continued time in office has a purpose.”

    Yes.
