The Time Is Now

By Gamini Seneviratne

Gamini Seneviratne

Much has been written about a “coup” supposedly attempted by the President against a democratically elected government. The short answer to market capitalism and to its more useful instruments (which include, I should add, communalism, drug trafficking – including ‘prescription drugs’, money laundering as well as the mass media), has been given by my colleague, Mahalingam “Jolly” Somasunderam in his column last week. As he phrased it in his inimitable style, spiced too with lively referencing, “An Orwellian Replay: As Elections Were Not Held, Democracy Has Been Saved” just about sums up the foundation of Ranil Wickremesinghe’s claims to any authority whatever. I doubt any Lankan would contest the resulting wipe-out of all his and other goons in parliament.

The speaker and those who were on the divisional bench of the supreme court cannot act as though they are unaware of context in any matter placed before them: it’s possible of course that such ignorance is a precondition for achieving bliss though not that of Nirvana. (It’s hardly possible to confer caps to those titles which seem to seek to confer distinction on those who occupy such positions by the act of donning the horse-hair, or maybe some Chinese synthetic, wigs that are relics of British colonialism. But, even for such a mind set it would take slavishness of a particularly low order to invite a Member of the extended and mostly dysfunctional “Royal Family” to “Independence” celebrations here. An earlier manifestation of the illegitimacy of those who have run this regime was the gift of a super luxury holiday to the most despised Prime Minister in decades in Britain, Tony Blair and his greedy family: a crime compounded by Blair giving a lecture at the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute.

I first saw Ranil Wickremesinghe some 40 years ago at his parents’ place in Thimbirigasyaya. His father, a newspaperman of long standing, wished to make a change in our dependence on Reuters et al and to launch our own news agency, Lanka Puvath. I had been shoved into ‘the Pool’ by the UNP and was available to undertake what he had in mind. Esmond Wickremesinghe was briefing me on all that when Ranil came in and seeing his father slunk along the wall and out of the room. Poor chap.

It’s clear that far from being focused on protecting our interests, as Esmond was particularly in this matter, his son has slithered along trying to suck up to our enemies. Just yesterday or the day before, in Washington, DC Mangala Samaraweera and a couple more of our domestic predators were shown with insane grins in the hallowed company of the boss of the IMF. The big do-dah is to take place shortly in Davos. Donald Trump has got all humphy-dumphy and will not attend (because it would mean some Democrats would also be in the US delegation). Will Ranil leave the fortress of ‘Temple Trees’ and venture forth sans the thousands of security people we are required to pay for? Davos, after all, is the site of the caves that sheltered Ali Baba and his Forty Thieves.

Ranil and his goons have no mandate to “enact” any legislation whatever (and none at all to make “constitutions”). If they have a case to make for whatever they think is good for us, they should go before the people via a general election and seek the required mandate. In such a context, given the character of those who sit in parliament (also with no mandate), civic organisations from the grass roots on, must make it clear to the world that any and all such bits of paper are invalid ab initio.

Now we have an administration, so called, that is having our laws drafted by foreigners without any intimation to us. They are cloistered in 5 star hotels here under strict security so their bosses can acquire rights to own not only millions of acres of our paddy fields but all our mineral wealth. Chief among their targets are the Eppawala Phosphate deposits which Justice A R B Amerasinghe and his fellow judges decreed be retained inviolate for the sustenance of our people through the future centuries. That prohibition is among others that Ranil Wickremesinghe and his fellow whatever-you-may-call-them are now trying to overturn in secret – away from the eyes not only of our people, including journalists, but even of their fellow ‘law-makers’ in parliament (an altogether irrelevant body).

In the light of such barbaric assaults on our people, their culture and the physical resources that belong to them, we should pay attention to the words of the USA Senator Kamala Harris, (a potential candidate for President). In her book published last week, The Truths We Hold she said, Years from now, our children and grandchildren will ask us where we were when the stakes were so high. They will ask us what it was like. I don’t want us to just tell them how we felt. I want us to tell them what we did.

A biased article from ana nother idiot who knows nothing but to please the extremists in the country.
    :
How dare this guy say, that Mangala Samaraweera and others make more problems, while they have been strugglling n ot being able to pay of the huges loans BP Rajakshes deliberately made being caught by premeditated chinese debt trap. Alone this year, the sum they have to pay off is over 5000 million of US dollars. How can a country bear this much of pressures on lanken economy, with nothing being gained from those white elephant projects louded by Mahinda Rajapakshe and his crooks in his high days. For us to feel fine, entire Rajakashes should be skinned and kept away from lanken politics.

No,….no debt trap by the Chinese. That’s a word concocted by the West on what usually happens when the Chinese investment is not allowed to perform by…….ok, the stadium was a bit useless ( would have infused money in the country if Asian games were held there, but West disallowed it). Bond Scam was certainly not to pay off Chinese loans.

In a country, entire systems are caught by social scum for politicial survival of Rajapakshes, what more we the people can expect.
    :
President was elected by 6.2 MIO voters, keeping hopes to corner HIGH profile criminals that looted the country to the core by 2015.
    .
Now very same President is unfortunately caught by former Mafia boss and his criminals
    :
People stay speechless/but praying for divine force and nail biting round the clock, not knowing what to do next.
since they have been betrayed as no leader in the region may have done.
Now ABUSIVE Sirisena behaves as if he knows nothing about his unethical activities. This man should be bomed on the spot if people to feel fine. But divine forces too stay crossed for some reasons.
    :
Main stream media and Rajaakshes work together to understate whatever being achieved by under the Premier. Stupid Sirisena is now on their lap, since his plans ended up in vain, also country s supreme courts verdict standing against incumbent president.
Almost everything is public secret today – but MEDIA stay in favour of vicious culprits.
    .

    Bravo Mr Seneviratna.

Thanks for securing balance on this website, dominated by people with religious and other pernicious agendas, the most uncivilised colonial relics. The comment writing cowards hiding under pseudonyms are even worse.

So thanks again. More power to your elbow, Sir.

Gamini, you have been a 5star public official who tread the straight and narrow precariously. But I am aghast at your attempt to fall into the abyss of Ranil Bashing with so much hatred and malice. Ranil has always had important issues like his sexual orientation which he had to repress due to the taboos that exist even now. Hence his idiosyncrasies, hang-ups and failings. Fortunately he did not put down a shot or two (or three) like you do or have done to keep problems at bay until the next morning. What you are saying is old hat. All you guys who insult and ridicule the royal family are the very people who love to show off their proficiency of the queen’s language. As you are trying to do so here. [edited out]

If all these Senas are consulting Lankawe political parties, one can imagine why there is difference between Singapore, got is freedom in 1960 and Ceylon, got is freedom in 1948.

Nobody knows why Ranil is not ready stop saving the Old Royals still and hand them over to UN Electric Chair. He attacked IMF and World Bank in oxford, London, But Mangala and Harsha vacationing in Washington, DC in the name of meeting IMF.

So, after reading the essay I was wondering if somebody writing the 19 as 79. Are Lankawe Sinhala Buddhists capable of reaching 79? This idiot doesn’t know what Ranil is up to, so he is writing all what he can dream of.

There is serious error in SLSPFR because there is no line to import the public flogging canes to fix those who have a kind of Hydrophobia.

This Gamini is on the attack of Ranil the Royalist. [edited out]

What crap! You have an election, appoint a government for the time that the constitution allows and let them rule. That is what people voted for. Appointing a new government by a coup and asking for an early election by the losing side prematurely is not democracy Mr. Senior. You should know that much after ruining ARTI for decades.
    Like son, like father.
This not the best way to secure more women, Mr. Malinda senior!

Please be a bit more specific Gamini Seneviratne with this thingy “The Time Is Now”.
Is it time to consult with Duterte? Surely not.
Time for MS to fade and why.
Time for RW to fade and why.
Time for both to fade and, of course, why.

    Commentators:

Supporting one thief and liar to prevent the re-emergence of another is NOT a value, and does not support democracy.

You may rant against the messenger; but before dismissing his message, seek out as much FACTUAL information as possible.

RW and Co. are not acting in a way that assures people, that they take SL sovereignty or our natural resources as valuable. That is something the people need to seriously hold them accountable to.

This write up smells like an obnoxious fart … shot by someone who reveled in orgies with a harem of young chicks in an Agrarian Field beside a lonely posh lane in Colombo 7 a few decades ago.

Ranil is a top class idiot. Ranil would watch others being tortured but he would not kill. Mahina Rajapakse is exctly the same but he himself would kill. Pabakaran, Mahinda Rajapakse and Ranil are all the same. Even CUBA and fidel Castro lived by the side of theri enemy. the problem is Sri lankan leaders ar simply women and they are not BRave visionaries. It is JRJ’s constitution that made Sri lanka a western state and that created even LTTE which was helped by USSR aligned India first and then by the INTERNATIONAL community.

I think Maithripala Sirisena should work to get rid Of Mahinda Rajapakse, Ranil and their theives. In reality, every cabinet minister in the past or the present are thieves. Parliamentarians are rewadred for keeping secrets. That is why they jump to this side and that. Jumpingis constitutional. Offering of 100s of minister posts to NAtional List MPs is Consttitutional. they is waht they changed during the LTTE war and JVP rebellion.

      Mirak,
You are right. Time is now to get rid of current President and former President and his family through legal process. Political coup is a criminal crime. Murder of Journalists is a crime. Murder of Human rights activists is a crime. Rape is a crime. Corruption, Bribe is a crime. Therefore, the rule of the law and justice should be served accordingly. Once that is over, the Elections should be held. Firstly Presidential election. Then Parliamentary election. Constitutional amendments should follow the elections to get rid of executive Presidency.
