There’s Nothing “National” In This Coalition

The whole country was taken by surprise, when President Sirisena inducted 11 Cabinet Ministers, 05 State and 10 Deputy Ministers from his own SLFP, into PM Ranil Wickremesinghe‘s government yesterday in the evening. This apparently is another political manoeuvre for survival with State power and has nothing to do with the mandate given at the January 08 presidential elections.

These 26 SLFP members of parliament represent the 5.8 million votes polled by Rajapaksa and was clearly against President Sirisena. Those 6.2 million who voted for Sirisena’s candidature never mandated for a hybrid government of this nature. This therefore is no “National” government, but a “Southern Sinhala Coalition” that now seem to hold the Wickremesinghe government safely in power, even if the promised parliamentary elections would not be held after their 100 Day programme. That programme itself is on crutches, limping with a heavy load of unfinished promises.

Ranil MaithriWickremesinghe and Sirisena may feel comfortable now, their stay in power will not be rocked by the SLFP in parliamentary opposition. That seems so with the large SLFP majority caged together with the UNP minority in a growing cabinet, providing a formidable 2/3 majority in parliament. Yet the danger is not in parliamentary politics for now. The opposition is now created outside parliament. Politically we feel, this snuffs out an effective opposition representation to the traditional SLFP vote base outside parliament. That political absence would thus pave way for a Rajapaksa comeback on a very racist platform. The political dichotomy that keeps growing can thus be seen with a more Sinhala chauvinist slogans thrown out between the these two camps in establishing their hold in the Sinhala South in terms of votes.

We therefore call upon all who voted to defeat the overwhelmingly corrupt family regime of Rajapaksa and installed this Sirisena-Wickremesinghe government to once again rally as a people’s force against opportunistic manipulations by leaders who are not committed to deliver what they promise, but make feeble attempts to remain in power.

This is rally good fun – politcal tamasha.

To get two thirds majority they give minister posts to unscrupulous fellows. When it comes to election time they will do the same thing pampering Sinhalese chauvinism.

So the end result will be ratcheted up Sinhala Buddhist chauvinism: Tamils, Muslims and Christians will face the music.

At least Mahinda will be seen as consistently pro-Sinhalese by the majority of Sinhalese voters.

Interesting to watch this drama unfolding.

Maithri dare not arrest Gnanasara for inciting violence against Muslims in Aluthgama for fear of losing votes. Gnanasara, Dayan, Soorawansa and the gang will make attractive sales pitch for Mara to win the Sinhalese voters, and we will be back to square one with the devil in power.

So long as Tamils, Muslims, and Christians are there for political bashing this Sinhalese chauvinistic politics will not change.

Thiru, you are wrong in assuming that on one side we have the Sinhala-Buddhists and on the other side, the Muslims, Tamils and Christians. Maithripala Sirisena could not have defeated Mahinda Rajapakse on these votes alone but also of the vast number of Sinhala-Buddhists who were dissiluusioned with the Rajapakse regime. Ranil Wickremasinghe has once again shown his spineless attributes and appear running scared that he will not have the support he needs after the parliamentary elections. Sadly the electorate might opt for the devil they know i.e. the MaRa contingent in the SLFP to the supposed angel UNP they don’t and begun to suspect already.

        Dear Mr Siritunga Jayasuriya,

From the tone and lopsided logic of your argument you seem to be an MR fan.

Re “These 26 SLFP members of parliament represent the 5.8 million votes polled by Rajapaksa and was clearly against President Sirisena.”

When MR was in power his cabinet was full of UNPers.
The voters who voted for those UNP MP’s were also against Rajapaksa. That did not stop MR.

Re “hold the Wickremesinghe government safely in power, even if the promised parliamentary elections would not be held after their 100 Day programme.”

You must be deaf and blind.
The UNP wants dissolution of Parliament in April and is more interested in clipping the wings of the President and transferring those powers to the PM to go for early elections.

The other parties want to complete the 100 day program.
The SLFP which controls power in Parliament wants new electoral system simultaneously with constitutional amendments.
Now could you please explain how the Constitution can be amended without SLFP support?

The most important exercise is the Constitutional changes to clip the wings of the Presidency.

If you have not noticed the proposed amendment limits the holder to two terms. Which if passed would be curtains for MR’s hopes of another term as an all powerful president.

        Kind Regards,

        Dear Sylvia,

Re ” Sadly the electorate might opt for the devil they know i.e. the MaRa contingent in the SLFP”

The only way that could happen will be for the Sinhala to feel threatened by separation.

The responsibility of preventing that rests with the Tamil political leadership.

        Kind Regards,

Reminiscent 9f the Opposition in 1977, after the (Old) SLFP lost catastrophically to JRJ!! The TULF became the Leader of the Opposition, JRJ gave a brand new car and many perks to the Late Mr. Amirthalingam and the rest is historical reading. As some other has observed, the Opposition will be in the hands of the ilk of Weerawansa or the “open streets”. Beware, my people!

Did JRJ buy this car out of his pocket?

He must be a very generous person.

I am no expert, I am just a reader, but my first thought was that this is a form of divide and rule, a way to slow don Rajapakshe’s steadily gathering momentum! Why else would MS draft in clowns like SB and Pavitra?
