The Value Added Tax (VAT) Bill was passed in Parliament this evening with a majority of 66 votes. A total of 112 voted in favour of the Bill, while 46 voted against it and 65 MPs abstained from voting.
Accordingly, the public will now be compelled to pay a further 4% tax, from the existing 11% VAT.
The 15% tax increase will be charged on all private health services other than diagnostic tests, dialysis and OPD services. The tax will also be slapped on all telecommunication services, tobacco products, powdered milk which contains added sugar or other sweeteners as well as on air tickets.
Yesterday, the Supreme Court announced that the amended VAT bill which was presented early this month was in accordance to the Constitution. The amended VAT bill was presented in parliament early this month for a second time, after the Supreme Court ruled that the first time the bill was presented, it was not in accordance to the Constitution.

RE: VAT Bill Passed
“The Value Added Tax (VAT) Bill was passed in Parliament this evening with a majority of 66 votes. A total of 112 voted in favour of the Bill, while 46 voted against it and 65 MPs abstained from voting.”
Congratulations.
You wee able to stick on the asses of those voters who voted the MPs, and they fully deserve it!
Now that the VAT has been passed and the Supreme Court said it is all right, after all there is representation, how about a new set of Tax Free Vehicle Permits? If not, Tax free Ethanol permits?
The MPs are running out of money again. You need votes for many many more bills.
You know they have many expenses “serving” the people.

This Government wants to tax us without going after the Rajapaksas stolen money!? The people should get together and refuse to pay taxes in protest till all the stolen money is brought back!!!

Going after Rajapakse thieves are great but what about those thieves in the parliament who rob the country in broad daylight by various means i.e. by selling duty free permits, getting bogus allowances, commissions etc.
People should get together and stone these thieves and their vehicles in addition to protesting taxes.
Citizens should pay taxes but these thieves are a burden to the system and average citizens. Next time when come begging for your vote kick them in the butt.

OH! Finally you passed the exam! Good job!! I think still you have to pass arithmetic; never-mind! you can proceed to Advanced level class but don’t sit that exam! The AL is not about VAT but WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHO AND WHY? It will be a hell of a lot of questions and you will be in the unknown territory of thinking and working according to a coherent plan!
Please answer this short question Mr. FM! What have you and your colleagues called Yahapalanists done so far for the last 21 months?
Do you think your job is a joke? Don’t think that the IMF is a joker too!
Just look around and see how other countries work!
You cannot fool all people all the time; someday in the near future yo will be caught and I don’t think that day is not too far! Unfortunately the COPE report is out too!!!

Well…you can only congratulate Ravi K. Well done. (I mean you can drag mandatory, ceremonial comments into this one way or the other as it seems that every single page of comments in CT gets an honourable mention of the fellow with the moustache and his family.) At the end of the day Government won…Hurray!
