Video: Petrol Bomb Hurled At Gintota Meeran Mosque Despite Curfew And Sagala’s Assurance

Despite the assurance and red notice issued by Minister of Law and Order Sagala Ratnayaka, video evidence clearly shows a pillion rider on a motor cycle hurling a petrol bomb at the 113 year old year old Gintota Meeran mosque on Galle Road around 6:55 pm last night, during curfew hours, Colombo Telegraph can reveal today.

The Law and Order Ministry’s media unit released a communique earlier yesterday, stating that the communal tension in the Gintota area was brought under control after a 12 hour curfew period was enforced at 9 pm on the 17th November. This was after additional Police battalions, the Police Special Task Force, the Anti-Riot Squad and Military were called in to bring the situation under control.

The communique sent out by the Minister Ratnayaka also issued a stern warning to rumour mongers which read “I am aware that some political groups are now on a desperate mission to turn this minor brawl into a Sinhala-Muslim clash. I urge the public not to be misled by their false propaganda. The same elements are now in the process of disseminating false videos and news on social media platform to stir up communal sentiments. I reiterate that stern action will be taken against everyone, irrespective of their positions and political affiliations, attempting to resort to racist propaganda. The same will apply to the rumour-mongers trying to capitalise on this opportunity to achieve petty political gains.”

However despite the curfew being re-enforced at 6 pm for a further 12 hour period, the hurling of the petrol bomb by a pillion rider on a motor cycle which took place at 6:55 pm, was whilst the curfew period was in effect.

Fortunately no harm was done to anyone or the Meeran Muslim Mosque, as the petrol bomb fell in the garden of its premises where no one was present.

The tense situation initially erupted on the 13 November 2017 over a bike accident involving a Sinhalese youth who had knocked down a Muslim child. The situation was amicably settled after the bike rider paid off the victims.

However on the 16 November 2017 a Sinhalese group of youth had assaulted two Muslim motor bike riders whilst reminding them of the incident that had taken place on the 13 November 2017. After one Muslim victim was hospitalized, a group led by a former Muslim Urban Council Member attacked two houses belonging to Sinhalese. One Sinhalese man was hospitalized due to the attack. The Police arrested the former Muslim Council Member and the two Sinhalese youth who assaulted the Muslim bike riders.

Thereafter prior to the situation being brought under control, the Muslim youth in the area had also gathered, raising communal tension, as they feared a similar attack on their community may take place as witnessed in Aluthgama and Darga Town in August 2014. The police have arrested 16 Sinhalese and 3 Muslims.

Meanwhile Deputy Minister of Foreign Employment and MP for Galle District, Manusha Nanayakkara told media “BBS Chief Gnanasara Thero played a key role in defusing tensions in Gintota today meeting all parties”. “More than 62 homes & businesses, around 10 vehicles were damaged due to last night violence in Ginthota,” he told media.

Another report said “Galle Gintota clash official damaged report – 05 injured, 66 houses, 26 shops, 14 vehicles 02 mosques damaged due to last night clash”. (By Manisa Unantenne)

LTTE did this kind of work in order to get insurance. It looks muslims themselves did it, if some one videoed it and expected the bomb throwing. IF the mosque is 113 years old, it should be old (that should be a lie). some how they want to demolish the old mosque and build a new one. they want to get insurance money. they did similar thing in Kurunegala and accused The buddhist monks. Sally was caught in it.

In spite of assurances by Sagala, and an enhanced security cordon around the area, the bomber managed to get through. This brings back memories of how the killers of Lasantha Wickrematunge managed to evade the high security cordon in Colombo in order to do their dastardly deed.

Clue: inside help – it is well know that our forces of ‘law and order’ still harbour many who sympathise with the ethno-racist element rife in our land.

The biggest nonsense was the arrival of Gnanasara as ‘peace maker’. The forked-tongued-fake should have had an enforcing order barring him from anywhere near the town.

Let us see how serious Minister Ratnayake, the PM and the President are about the promises they made.

      Dear Prime Minister, and Yahapapanaya,

Come up with a Bill that will make those who are responsible for the riots and damages, being prosecuted for criminal activities, as well as being sued for property damages, to pay the victims.

Right now they are getting away free after committing crimes.

Gintota incident: PM says stern action against miscreants

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who visited the Gintota in Galle today after the tense situation said that stern legal action would be taken against those who were responsible for the violence.

The Prime Minister said a few people could start an unrest or violence situation.

“A major disaster erupted because of people spreading rumours. We can’t station Police and military here forever. So everyone should live peacefully,” he said.

Earlier, a Police curfew had been imposed in Kurunduwatte, Mahahapugala, Welipitimodara, Ukwaththa, Gintota East, Gintota West and Piyandigama GN divisions following tense situation in the areas.

At least 19 individuals were arrested in connection with the incident and several houses and vehicles were also damaged.

The Prime Minister who met the victims in the area said the Government would look into and make arrangements to pay compensations.

Ministers Sagala Ratnayake, Vajira Abeywardane and IGP Pujith Jayasundara were also present.

Sure i bet the tamils set fire and burned themselves in tyres in 83 too, because the sinhalayas do not have a reputation for setting things on fire. The Sinhala Buddist guide book for arson is as follows:

Step 1: set everything you see on fire.

Step 2: make up sorry a** excuses and blame the victim.

Step 3: claim it’s insurance fraud.

Step 4: Use monks and social media to propagate this made up narrative.

“”Ekelbroom”, a Muslim who takes a reasonable stand on all matters, had begun the comments on the earlier story by making the observation that using certain provisions of the law will not permanently solve the problems facing our society; we have to address the causes.

    *

We have to ask ourselves, think, and inquire into incidents to find out the many causes for the sad overall state of our country. Surely, the failure of those whom we have elected to retain our respect must surely be to blame. It is true all of us are to blame for electing those guys, but the reality is that most of us vote only for perceived winners. It will always be like that.

    *

Personally, I will vote only for those whom I see as promoting peace and fairplay. It is true that our expectations about such persons is often dashed. However, even those who conscientiously vote altruistically must recognise that we can’t be smug ourselves about what we have done. Why do so many resent the positions that we take up? Aren’t we seen as being comfortably off (relatively speaking), and so many who condone violence do so because they don’t really believe our commitment to the social justice for all that we profess.

    *

To be more specific, those elected on the 8th of January 2015, who have proved corrupt are to blame. No, not primarily Maithri. whatever one may hear about shis siblings and purchase of Russian ships, he remains a man with some commitment, some honesty. It is the UNP section of Yahapalanaya that has let us down.

There is enough blame to go around. This country is cursed with ethnic tensions, between the majority and minority groups. What have the past and present governments done to diffuse it? Nothing.
The previous regime said nothing when the BBS went around making hate speeches, attacking minority businesses, and it ended up with the brutal massacre of Muslims in Aluthgama. One of them even opened the BBS building with much fanfare. What have they done to address the issue? Nothing. This government is no better, they are afraid to speak against hate crimes, and nip it in the bud. We are also going to be the target of nations with their own agenda, who want to cause trouble here. Why are we opening up to that?

      Sinhala_Man,
      .
“Personally, I will vote only for those whom I see as promoting peace and fairplay.”
      .
In the case of Northern Province and Jaffna there will apparently be no candidates for peace and fair play.
      .
I will return to my tradition of not voting and continue howling in the dark.

        Dear Lone Wolf.

You have to make your decision, not me.

        *

However boycotting will always give negative feedback. It is often possible to find some fringe party that will not get anywhere, but which you will never feel guilty about voting for.

        *

Another possibility is voting for the least bad individuals.

        *

Boycotting will add you to the list of the indifferent or the ignorant. Spoiling your vote is similarly negative. I know you to be from Jaffna. I implore you to get the polling booth. The least bad thing to do will be to write clearly that you disapprove of all candidates.

        *

You may not want to contest yourself, but why not push some decent you (women?) to contest.

        *

I’d advocate this in any area, but given our government’s indifference, I wouldn’t blame you for voting TNA.

Correction : wanted to suggest that you get a group consisting mainly of young women to contest.

          *

That’s seriously meant. It is mainly elderly men who have been wielding power. Let’s change both criteria.

          *

Some could interpret the suggestion as an insult to you. It isn’t. You are an excellent man as far as I can see.

The failure to arrest and convict the Safron Thugs of BBS is a failure of the entire law and order and judicial system in Lanka.
Let’s face it. SInhala Buddhist extremist racism is the core problem. They finished off the Tamils and now are going for the Muslims.
SInhala Buddhist extremistsand their political backers must be put behind bars.

      Sinhala_Man,
Good intention is one aspect, telling good is one aspect, doing a good is one aspect; even tolerating good happening is a different aspects. A practical good can happen only if all these aspects can be aligned in one straight line. We, two friends talked about Ranil burning Chandrika Constitutional proposal. My friend, a UNP bent told, “He is politician, it is important his name getting associated with success, he was not willing Chandrika getting the name; he is not against Tamils, so he will do it himself”. Even for only philosophical point, I am not with that argument, which substantiate destructive, self-actualization ego – in Ranil decision, a 150,000 death could been prevented if Ranil not doing but letting Chandrika to do it. The intolerance for good happening, even if is good in all aspects, will hold the world away from peace and prosperity. But lets us assume that there is pint too. Then what dis Ranil of that? Ranil’s intolerance to good happening ended he claiming he won the war- but refusing to accept the responsibility to having generated a Genocide war.

Think of this: New King wants the Emil Mahendran’s case investigated. Nothing is wrong on that when all other cases are investigated in time sequence, urgent sequence. It cannot be denied that there was intentional looting, but possibly all official procedures were full filled. New King wants Ranil to stand on the witness cage and accuse Mahendran – two pals. This power struggle is further delaying the Secret Solution, of which they are looking for an opportunity to put the blame on Tamils-TNA and get out of it or kill it at 2019 election. In the other case, the whole world is now asking Lankawe to conduct the war crime investigation. New King was listed as one accused in the preliminary report submitted OISL. (Ranil has not been officially named in report on Central Bank case.) Instead of telling Ranil to stand for Emil Mahendran case, will the country leader set example of setting up an investigation and stand on the witness cage and clear his name from White flag murders? Are those who are asking Ranil to stand for Emil Mahendran case will be asking New King to stand for White Flag case too?

The maxim of this Sinhala Only Jury justice is, state head can stand on the witness cage against Accused Tamil to punish him, but State head will not stand in witness cage if the IC is accusing him of murdering surrendered Tamils. Is these two of “Ranil and New King”, how much you know of them how much of them are sincere in bring peace and to who you decides to vote?
So voting for peace maker is with of how much of capacity to influence good to happen is not sure for me unlike as would like to propagate it. Sorry for skeptical.

This can, and might, turn into a very volatile situation, which will leave people dead and injured. What are these thugs trying to achieve here? How would they react if someone threw a petrol bomb into a temple? Why are they harassing and provoking these Muslims? Why are they filled with hatred? Why are they trying to start another ethnic war in this country? When a minority people feel threatened, are afraid for their lives, and feel they are in danger, extremism and resistance, might be the only resort, and this will lead to problems of major proportions in this country.

These idiots seem to want another bloody war, and just can’t learn the lesson from the past. It seems the hatred spewed by the BBS and other extremist groups have poisoned the minds of these racists. They have chosen a path of violence instead of peace.
It is time for the government to stop this before it explodes into something they cannot control. NOW is the time to arrest the thugs, and throw them in jail (with NO bail).

Chrtra, let me call you Ms Chitra!

We all know that we are all born into the religion, but our behavours have been cauptured by rotten culture being practised in this country. I really dont know why the people are that much away from BUDHUDAHARAM but into Jathaka katha led ” Budhdhagama”.
Budhdha s teachings have never asked the adherents to support any kind of violence based activities.
Unfortunately, our birth country majority of people have been fooled by so called SIVURA wearing but not real buddhist monks. Even if high respectable Mahanayakes stay mum on crucial issues: We really dont know what their real thoughts have been.
They should finally wake up from their sloth life and react responsibly can heal lanken folks easily. But latter seems to be not functioning as we expect them to.

Tell me, why Mahanaayakas stay blind and deaf not making most valauble statements such as
” we are all born to this country, we are all srilanken citizens, we should be entitled to equal rights as SRILANKENS. There regligion, race, or anything should no play a role “.

So long Mahanayakayes stay not reacting properly, adequately, those the extremists like Rajapakshes or the like politican virulent men seek and abuse the situation to write their stories in the gullible mind sets of the people.

Europeans country have safeguarded the basic rights for their citizens from the day one. In UK, you will get to see brites wearing Dastar as police heads working in some cities. There is no discrimination on that. In Germany, there are head of dept in hospitals ( chief medical officers) wearing scalves but granted to work as usual. There are minorities that would not want them to wear it, but majority have tolerated it.
Our people behave so wild even today nothaving practised their mind sets properly. This should be stopped.

Good buddhist monks the few we have in this country should wake up today to protect the nation being fooled by extremists and opportunists like Rajapakshes.

        Samuel Jayaweera,

Why Mahanayakas not make valuable statements such as “………..”

        Why? Why?

Why don’t they make progressive statements such as given below, that has evidence and support and is closer to the Truth, and Buddha preached the Truth, and if he dis bot know the Truth, remained silent.

        Why? Because of Self-Interest.

So, Mahawamsa is an insult to the Buddha, and
Para-Sinhala “Buddhism” is an insult to Buddhism.

        https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/mahavamsa-an-insult-to-the-buddha/

Why won’t the monks make a statement that the Sinhala are Para-Sinhala, just like the Para-Tamils, Para-Muslims etc., in the Land of Native Veddah Aethho, as it is the truth,, supported by modern genetics? Why? Ask the Church and Galileo? Self-interst?

Very few comments earlier showed believe in Sagala’s statement as his focus was on Old Royal or the Joint Comedies, but not on Gintota.

Why this happened is a shared responsibility of predominantly Old Royals, BBS, Priyasad, Managarama and Rear Admirable Sarath….. . Though Sagala too worried as much of election, but nobody would dispute that this is an election stunt of Old Royals. It was sure as there was nothing left on Tamils side, even though Tamils asked for Devolution, Old Royals let it to take on Muslims first to set a tension on the Constitutional change and to create ground for vote hunting. If it had gone further, as always, like the dog limp on the leg irrelevant of where it hurts for it, it might have turned on Tamils in Colombo. Life to minorities is uncertain in Lankawe no question on that. But Muslim’s burden is their newly build up wealth need to be protected. But for Tamils, it is basic rights to live safely. So turning their call for safety life through constitutional changes on Muslim’s business because of jealous, creates a complex situation to understand and analyze or resolve.

While Sagala claimed of his force has suppressed the tension in South, many media reported either police or STF watched it taking place or actually did it. Sagala knows well whom his watch dog bites. Sagala was focused on the election coming, not on the riots building up in Galle. His statement fed for only for that purpose.
So those who know Sagala’s police know what he was talking about controlling the riots too.

Muslims try to compare their problems with these problems. Hakeem went with Sinhala supporting actresses to Geneva in 2012 and claimed it was Old Royals government Muslims were having their happiest life. But Muslim writers, to seek sympathy, they compare them with Tamils, only when they are hit by Sinhala mobs. This has brought suspicion to Tamils claims of Genocide by Sinhalese as well as of the humiliation to Muslims too.
While whole Lankawe is rattled by the magnitude of news of generated by this incident where only 13 Sinhalese were arrested for this, but it very rarely get reported that Sinhala army organized Aava Kuzhu operation. Sagala said that the police will be stopping it but had never accepted that it only the police and army is getting it going on.
Tamils do not just face their fundamental right breakages, but real safety to their life is in constant danger. While only 13 Sinhalese were arrest in this communal tension, 18 Tamil youths were arrested on long plagued rapist Army administered Aava Kuzhu sword slashes. While parents put on troubles to get released these innocents youths arrested, many times under PTA, the gang continues out on its rampage on Tamils’ life with army and police protection.

Amith weerasinghe and his Mahason Balakaya played a pivotal role in spreading rumors and organizing its members to carry out attacks, in addition to spreading fake news on facebook. Now will Sagala put his money where his mouth is and arrest this deranged, racist individual? Because so far this thug has avoided jail time by monks intervening on his behalf. Gnanasara thero had issued a statement yestersay directly pointing the finger at Mahason Balakaya, urging the authorities to take action. Now will ‘all talk no action’ sagala have the balls to take stern and realistic action against Amith Weerasinghe? I highly doubt it! Facebook heroes are above the law these days and appear to wield more power than the entire cabinet combined.

    .

“However despite the curfew being re-enforced at 6 pm for a further 12 hour period, the hurling of the petrol bomb by a pillion rider on a motor cycle which took place at 6:55 pm, was whilst the curfew period was in effect.”

      Dear “LittlesimonfromBerlin”,

I don’t know Plato’s real name. For sure, he isn’t the pupil of Socrates from ancient Athens.

      *

However, my name is known by most people commenting regularly on this site (which at the moment has a recent problem; it doesn’t respond to the mouse, even on the only browser that one can post comments from – Google Chrome). What digressions I’m given to.

      *

However, even I know a few things about Plato; we have graduated from the same University. Also, we had studied in the same school; he a little earlier than me. This is a bit of light-hearted banter that we have indulged in. I hope you don’t mind!

      *

However, this a serious situation for this country of 22 million to be saddled with. I think it tragic. Many of us did our bit getting this government elected; I hope it doesn’t ever plumb the depths that the Rajapaksa government did. But right now it is looking pretty bad.

        Sinhala Man,

if the police together with a govt, would want to stand against the culprits that have fired the mosque – they can easily do it.

But the thing is even incumbent govt seems to be not paying WHOLHEARTED ness in terms of punishing real culprits.

That is the reason why Rajapakshes and their supports stay roaming in the city even today.

A trivial incident snowballing into a riot shows the ‘state of the Nation’. The arson attempt was clumsy. This shows that an organised hand is there to exploit incidents. It is time GoSL gets to the bottom. The only weapon required is the will and determination.
The Deputy Minister of Foreign Employment and district MP, Galle, Manusha Nanayakkara says ~ “BBS Chief Gnanasara Thero played a key role in defusing tension in Gintota meeting all parties……………..”.
    Do we need ‘tongue-in-cheek’ comments?

We are certain that a majority of our people are peace loving and will not hesitate to condemn any kind of clashes between communities. One cannot imagine that despite our literacy rate we boast of such an ugly incident that happened in a place like Gintota.

It is relevant to quote here what a person from Gintota had to say how the two communities had coexisted during his days there. He says: ‘I was born in Gintota and educated at Gintota Maha Vidyalaya. I still cherish the pleasant memories of my childhood although I don’t live there anymore. There were many Muslim students in my class and they were our true friends. We were in and out of each other’s houses. Whenever there is a big pinkama at Thuparama or Gangathilaka temples, the Muslim community joined and helped us. We never felt that we belonged to a different ethnic group and we all lived like one family.

When the Kiridanaya was held at Mahawatta Bodhi tree on Esala Poya day, the Muslim cooks were there to prepare food. So, I earnestly appeal to my relatives, friends and the villagers in general in my native place not to turn that beautiful village near Gin Ganga into a blood bath.

Let us all live as human beings in peace and harmony as we have done all these year.’ We really applaud this moving appeal from the man from Gintota. Let’s recall what Bertrand Russel once said about coexistence: ‘It’s coexistence or no existence.’ India’s late prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru said ‘The only alternative to coexistence is ‘co-destruction’.’

That’s why Muslims are called ” Thoppi changers”.
They’re like chameleons change colours to suit them.
    Now they get the medicine.
Same as the Colombites Tamils they too changed their lifestyle and names to suit the time of the day.
Now one by one they’re in trouble , because with eyes opened they fell into Pits.

Do the so called Buddhists have Character and Honesty.
It looks like this Religion and its chapter and verses of Buddha Sasana had taken a Nose dive beyond repair.
    Who should take the blame.
Now Law and order Minister Sagala wants to bring back the hard core southern Sinhala criminals hiding in foreign countries to be brought back with the help of Interpol.
Well said Minister , you should without delay.

Former Council Member or any such people should not be given nominations for elections or any such positions in future. Such people who have done such wrong should be severely punished. How could you expect such people to lead as role models and others to follow. After all its the innocent people who have to suffer.
