Vijayakala Maheswaran has resigned from the post of State Minister of Child Affairs after Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who is also the leader of the party she represents in Parliament, the UNP (United National Party), asked her to step down on account of calling for the resurgence of the LTTE.
Maheswaran, at a state function, referring to the abduction and rape of a six year old girl, said that people were safe while the LTTE was controlling parts of the North and East and expressed the view that a resurgence of that party was needed.
Following outrage from various quarters, Wickremesinghe is reported to have met with Maheswaran on Wednesday (4th) and advised her to resign.
Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has informed the Attorney General to investigate whether or not the controversial statement constitutes a violation of the constitution.
