Wag The Dog

By Mano Ratwatte

Mano Ratwatte

Every few Years, the US will find an oil Rich nation in the Middle-East to bomb and destabilize no matter what the reasons are(Iraq by Bush; Libya ruined by Obama). Media in the US will never talk about the suffering of innocent civilians in those invasions or destabilization efforts that are a direct result of those interventions. Instead, the heinous gas attack in Syria will cause the media to echo the words of the administration without asking the hard questions. Thus, it appears the new air strikes in Syria are another clear cut “WAG THE DOG” scenario; Trump crowed “mission accomplished” echoing the infamous words of George W Bush about the strikes.

Russians who along with Iran are helping Syria fight ISIS terrorism turned a blind eye-wink-wink about the strikes on April 13th, 2018; they were probably informed of the targets by US to avoid an escalation of the crisis into a bigger conflict; both sides have ground troops and Russia has significant military assets in Syria as well.

Bigger question is are these strikes a precursor to a much sought after war with Iran aided and abetted by other regional close allies of the USA. If there was real solid proof that Syria’s brutal dictator was behind the alleged gas attack why was it not presented to the UN Security Council? What was the haste? Is it illegal for a nation to attack a sovereign nation without sanction from the UNSC

In 1962, National Security Advisor McGeorge Bundy informed President John F. Kennedy that U.S. surveillance aircraft had discovered the presence of Soviet missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles from American soil. It was the start of the Cuban Missile Crisis, which brought the world to the brink of nuclear war. US produced facts, satellite imagery and other proof to the UN. US Secretary to the UN, Adlai Stevenson presented irrefutable proof of Russian weapons in Cuba and confronted the USSR; and notorious shoe thumping Nikita Khruschev blinked and withdrew the weapons to avoid a nuclear holocaust. US won that round.

In 2003 of course, the US produced false evidence to the UN via General Colin Powell to start that ill-fated adventure. “Mission Accomplished” that totally rendered the old checks-and-balances apart and the unintended consequence was making Shia Iran(90% Shia) the dominant strategic decision maker in the Shia majority Iraq (The Muslim population of Iraq is approximately 60%–65%Shi’a, 15%–20% Arab Sunni and 17%) Sunni Kurdish).

This time there was nothing in the way of evidence (real or fake) presented to the UN; nor was the issue debated rationally. Why was that? Why the eagerness to punish the bad boy Assad whose military really poses no threat to US, Israel nor Saudi Arabia? This was probably a way to send a message to Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah who also now have a strong presence in Syria helping the Shia minority government of Assad defeat ISIS terrorists.

What is the future in oil rich Middle-East when big powers get to test their weapons with impunity, so they can sell more to fearful oil rich potentates?

Donald Trump became the first US President to choose Saudi Arabia(KSA) as his first foreign destination upon taking office.  Immediate effect was the sale of nearly $US110 billion — that’s about $147 billion — worth of military equipment to  effective immediately.  The deal included tanks, combat ships and missile defence systems, as well as radar, communications and cybersecurity technology. The New York Times is also reporting that the deal includes the sale of precision-guided munitions, which the Obama administration had stopped because it was worried they would be used to bomb civilians in Yemen.  The United States is Saudi Arabia’s main military supplier and it has military stockpiles and bases there.

KSA is where the main Wahabi ideology that created ISIS and Al Qaeda types emanate.  Yet, recently Trump drooled about being able to sell billions of dollars of high dollar item weapons systems to them. He told the Crown Prince who visited USA with a high powered delegation, that he would love to sell more weapons to KSA. Arguably KSA’s main ideological enemy in Islam is Iran. Iran has shown a belligerent attitude towards KSA and Israel. Therefore, it benefits the US to sell weapons, and make massive profits.

Why has Trump,(and Obama before him as well) keep silent when Saudi Arabia (KSA) has been mentioned by humanitarian aid groups to be the main culprit behind the large number of civilian deaths? Will the US stop selling lethal weapons to Saudi Arabia? no. The proxy war between Iran and KSA there has been a horrific tragedy for ordinary Yemenis.

Yet most Americans just believe and accept whatever its media tells it to believe. Most of them have woeful knowledge of world geography or geo-political facts. The graphic sums up the way they look at other nations.

For instance, if today, the US media is to demonize Sri Lanka, and say Sri Lanka has chemical weapons and helps jihadi terrorists, automatically without even asking hard questions or pausing for a moment to check if this is factual, the vast majority will support bombing it because it will become a “bad guy”. This is the mentality because most of them cannot locate the contentious nations reported in the media on a map.

That is the sad reality despite America’s prowess and technologically superior non-pareil military might. It is very easy to tell the frightened people(ever since the 9/11 terrorist attacks launched by Al Qaeda; 15 of those terrorists were Saudis and none were Iraqis, but 80% of the American public was made to believe Saddam and Iraq(eye-rack) was behind 9/11.

The call “we have enemies we need to strike because they are an imminent national security threat “ is an easy way to garner support for war; even if that so called enemy is armed only with obsolete weapons, which US can overwhelm in a blink of the eye ;like derelict Syrian weaponry that stands no chance.

Which is the next target for destabilization?  Trump will get much higher approval ratings and media will forget the controversial investigations and troubles. And people will say that criticizing the President of the USA is unpatriotic and un-American.

This attack smells and looks like a classic WAG THE DOG scenarios. It is imperative Sri Lanka leaders do their best to avoid falling into the “bad guys” category in the American lexicon. If it means giving bases to the US, then??? Leave it to the learned readers.

The leaders of so called ‘Developed’ countries (USA, UK, France, Germany) have tribal mentality. If they do not like; kill the leader, ruin the country. They do not care at all for human rights but come to preach us.

‘He’s WON the WAR’ – British general claims Assad DIDN’T use chemical weapons
A FORMER British Army officer has claimed President Assad did not cause the deadly chemical attack in Douma that killed dozens and sparked a missile strike on Syria.

      https://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/latest-news/696049/syria-war-assad-theresa-may-world-war-three-douma-missile-attack

Challenging Theresa May’s claim the Syrian regime “has continued to use chemical weapons and will continue to do so,” Major General Jonathan Shaw said there was no rationale behind Assad’s involvement as he had already “won the war”.

Speaking to The Mail on Sunday he said: “Why would Assad use chemical weapons at this time? He’s won the war.

“That’s not just my opinion, it is shared by senior commanders in the US military.

“There is no rationale behind Assad’s involvement whatsoever.

“He’s convinced the rebels to leave occupied areas in buses.

“He’s gained their territory. So why would he be bothering gassing them?”

In his views, jihadists and various other opposition groups who have been fighting against the Syrian leader had a far greater motivation to launch the brutal chemical attack because they had much to gain from making it look like Assad was behind it.

Their intention was to keep the US involved in the war – after Trump said US troops were going to pullout of the Syrian strife, “for other people to sort out”, he explained.

        Mr. Ratwatte,
“In 1962, National Security Advisor McGeorge Bundy informed President John F. Kennedy that U.S. surveillance aircraft had discovered the presence of Soviet missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles from American soil.”
The US media at the time cleverly concealed the fact that US missiles were in Turkey near the Soviet border. They were quietly withdrawn as part of the deal, but this was not publicised to show this as a great victory for the “free world”.
Similarly, most US military actions in the Middle East are portrayed as heroic/ good for democracy, etc. OIL never figures in the discourse.
Sometimes, it seems there is little to choose between CNN / Fox and Moscow Radio of old.
By the way, you left out the permanent (since 1956) darling of the Media, Israel. Another article, maybe?

Russia said 70 missiles were shot. Syria said it shot only 13. Allies deny anything was shot. May be one or two have been shot. But it is clear no planes shot at all. It appears there was pre-arrangement Russian missiles would not be used. If that agreement was there and Russia had honored it, Russia should not have overly estimated that Syria shot 70 of them. Russia made cheap of it.

After the last election Putin was too much. He had friendship with President Trump. Putin just behaved like Old King and destroyed everything. More he bully, more the NATO going to panic. more he is going to codorned. He wants it to be put out? He has to get out and frank with West. West thought to keep the teeth tight until he passes another five years. But he couldn’t wait for that.

The greedy objective is to acquire energy available in these countries. It is of primitive value, but deceptively planned and executed by both US and Russia. However, the plans does not appear to come from the leaders, but obviously there has to be a shady organizing unit in these countries being highly active. The objective language is, ‘seek energy’.

I mean….there is hardly any reason for Russia to try and wrest control from the West in this era. US, UK and other Western nations merely desire to maintain their tottering structure due to interferences from places like Russia and China. West is hardly in competition for the sake winning the kingship game like they did in the past decades and centuries. China has possibly conformed and is negotiating and balancing things out with the US. Assad on the other hand wants his kingship (rather like Gadhafi), disregardful of the effects it will have on the global dollar and the livelihoods people like the Americans. He cares none for his people also. If he is to be taken out, so be it.

Pertaining to Sri Lanka, the Chinese push is quite ok with Trump around (Trump IS friendly with China…..he tried to be friendly with Russia, but they are compromising and need to save face). Idiot Ranil however cannot see it, and is scardy-cat about upsetting the Indian contingent still stupidly stuck with the brainwashing done by the old US admin. Let’s get away from the stupid races.

Thanks for exposing the US machinations in the Middle East supported by other Western powers. There are clear lessons for Sri Lanka to learn. But I am not sure whether “It is imperative Sri Lanka leaders do their best to avoid falling into the “bad guys” category in the American lexicon,” as you have concluded. A tactical diplomatic approach is necessary to avoid unnecessary missiles. ‘Doing our best’ is also necessary. Sri Lanka as a country or as a people (including you!) perhaps is already in the “bad guys” category. It is not particularly because of defeating the LTTE that Sri Lanka has fallen into that category. It is largely because of the economic and strategic relations with China. Of course Sri Lanka can go without. But then the country will remain eternally as a lower middle income country. Sri Lanka does not have oil like in the Middle East. But we are strategically located with important harbours. UNHRC resolutions are the way that the US sends us their missiles. The recent most was on 23 March. We are particularly locked on by co-sponsoring the Resolution 30/1 in October 2015.

Laksiri Fernando, I am at a loss to understand your thrill! I have my doubts about your, ‘There are clear lessons for Sri Lanka to learn’. Sri Lanka can teach a lesson or two to US.

What the learned Professor saying is, “We paid for the American PR firms to have the LTTE categorized as terrorist Organization; but in addition to payments we make for PR firms through Ajith Nivard’s Central Bank account, now American government is also asking for payments. Look! We should lose the Chinese commissions not to earn the wrath of America. I advise we plead ‘Pichchai Vendam Nayai Pidi’, (Please, I beg you, not alms, but stop your dog. It is going to tear me off.) Obey America instead of being beaten up.” If that was so easy, can these Super Expert Consultants explain why Ranil sold the Hangbangtota to China and kick on the butt of the American Ambassador? China is not going to go happy with the Hangbangtota; it will not go away if it didn’t get Island with in the Diyawanna Oya.
Kathirgamar fooled the West and brought them into the war. The Ministers have been barking that “America waiting with plane in Katunayake to Transport Pirapaharan. We did not care America, but we finished him off”. Now what?
All these time they bragged that LTTE is banded by 32 nations as Terrorists. Mangala to Thero De Silva claimed that they were the one got Condoleezza Rice to have ban LTTE all over the world. Now, the same tongues are twisting the story and telling that America is not bothered of if LTTE is terrorist or not, but it is asking only our blood and flesh. What a cheap talk. “Iraval Thanthavan Kedkinraan Illai enraal Viduvaana? (The one leased your body-the God- is asking back it, if you say no, will he give up?). With all the lies named as Condoleezza Pact, Obama Pact, Kerry pact they were fooling the world, but now having a cold feet because Russia did not keep its words of destroying America down to earth if America attack Syria.
If there is something called shame they will not talk like this.

“It is largely because of the economic and strategic relations with China. Of course Sri Lanka can go without. But then the country will remain eternally as a lower middle income country.”
China gets its hand in with expensive baubles like expressways and airports that we really don’t need. The day we learn to live within our means, without loans, we will be immune to pressure. We have an exaggerated idea of our own importance.

“But we are strategically located with important harbours. “

Why does anyone need our harbours when they have access to sophisticated arsenals weapons of mass destruction which could destroy a country many times over? If only intention is to destroy a country the USA could do it from Neveda desert, without sending its air crafts B52, battleships, aircraft carriers or boots on the ground.

The harbours are needed only for the purpose of international trade.

“UNHRC resolutions are the way that the US sends us their missiles. “

US, the rest of the west, Hindia, clandestinely Norway, ……….. now Saudi do not need UN resolutions to destroy a country if they chose to do so. By the way US and Hindia have been actively involved in saving Sri Lanka and all those war criminals from investigation or prosecution.
If you thought it was Dayan Jayatilleka who rose to the occasion and saved the country and clan at UNHRC sessions in 2009, I may have to agree with you simply because you are an academic who found Gota and Mahinda were fit for honorary doctorate.

Sinhala Intellectuals are creating the New Relativity Theory of comparing the Old Royals ICRC’s Coordinated Zero Casualty with Allies’s Russians negotiated “Zero Casualty Mission Accomplished”. Let’s see how it works if any hair can remain on our heads not pulled out when the end of this new Mahavamsa is reached.

Bush’s exposed WDM propaganda is the face saving “woman sleeping with Lion Mahavamsa” for Sinhala Intellectuals. They like to invoke Bush’ WDM Mahavamsa to balance off with Zero Casualty Humanitarian Rescue Mission. So they are starting with Mission Accomplished WDM Mahavamsa, travelling though GPS Coordinates of Hospital’s ICRC supplied and merging out of Allies Zero Casualty Mission Accomplished retaliation to Assad’s Gas attack. Lot of wiggling!
Sinhala Intellectual need not to have ended waiting to the Allies “Zero Casualty Mission Accomplished” to justify their ICRC Coordinated Zero Casualty, if Old Royals hadn’t withdraw the Doles’ Banana farm in NCP and as a continuous challenge to Ambassador Blake, went ahead on and created the Hangbangtota White Elephant Project. If the food manufacturing company Dole have had its land which it bought from Old Royals’ after Old Royals acted a drama as Tamil Cricket Player Murali (Old Royals’ CB Government Mahendran of that time) was selling it, Thero De Silva’s May 2009 success would have remained intact until now and last December Ranil need not had to kick on the butt of American Ambassador to protect Jerusalem from Israel. Lot of things in Lankawe would be different, now, if Dole had its Banana Farm in NCP.

Sinhala Intellectuals willing to compare their Zero Casualty with American Military which is claiming its latest retaliation to Gas Attack is Zero Casualty. There is 100% chance of Zero Casualty in Syria because the attacked facilities were exclusive Military Facilities. Even the numbers of the watchers or guards on duty might have been very low as it was Friday. Attack was a negotiated attack with Russia, so it is said Syria saved even some of its need ammunition by transferring those to Russian Camps. There is 100% possibility there was no people present in the facilities before attack. Assad’s walking Saturday Morning to office, telecasted by Syrian Government Chanel, ensures Assad was not overcome by surprise, and for his comforts, Allies had kept their word of attacking only whatever was agreed with Russia. Russia did not take the incident serious, after real attack, as much serious when it threaded before the negotiation for the attack. So the Zero Casualty there is understandable true. This is where Sinhala Intellectuals like to shunt their Car too, using Bush’s Mahavamsa WDM and Mullivaaikkaal Zero Casualty. So Sinhala intellectual are writing that their “Zero Casualty” which they conducted using ICRC supplied hospital Coordinates to gain maximum bang per bucks on the shells cost is no way different from the Zero Casualty retaliation for Gas Attack. Whether the Sinhala Buddhist Rapist Army is hero in protecting Ceylon from China grapping by pieces or India Invading or even Tamils separating their land by declaring freedom, but the Appa Diplomacy Sinhala Intellectuals are Killadies in comparing the West’s operations world with their Zero Casualty of 1500,000 murders of Tamils in five months.

Mano Ratwatte is pontificating too much. Might is right, – that’s what he is accusing US of. Who in his sane mind would contest his statement. I am not overly interested in analysing the actions of USA. Look at what a poor – no might? – nation like SL is doing to its own citizens, – Tamils. Might is relative. Very very relative.

Media is reporting that President Assad had his gas bombs saved and quoted to claim they would be used again if needed (is that a form of Syria accepting it’s gas attack, though Russian President vigorously denying it?). Ambassador Nikki Hailey had said Trump’s gun remains loaded and the binoculars locked on the target (She actually said “Locked and loaded”, which is said to be “M1 Garand” loading procedure-no view finder involved). This would suggest that America did know the gas weapons would have been saved from attack, at least for President Assad’s face saving, but Nikki warned that knowing of Assad had saved the bombs doesn’t means a green flag from America for next year’s Gas attack by Assad. It appears, even if Pentagon had missed the gas bombs in Damarcus, Nikki had destroyed them in New York (UN). Russia faced crushing defeat in UN, by 8 to 2 there, remaining members abstained. The defeat was not by American Veto, but Russia got only China’s and Bolivia’s backing. All and all, it is said Syrian President is not rattled by the bangs as much as Russian President. A Russian military journalist described Russia is now relived, target were purely Syrian facilities. But CT suggests the War Crime time consultants and PhD conferrers’ tension is only starting now.

Last year President Trump attacked Syria. Rippling did not vibrate in Lankawe (; apparently produced no result). He attacked this year too. On the last year’s attack, President Xi Jinping was with Trump. He was in corporation with Trump. Last year, in Lankawe, Ranil had defeated Resolution 30/1 with the new Resolution 34/1, hoping eventually, all cannons would go silent and subsided. Continuing on that success, he brought PM Modi to upcountry and fooled him on ETCA. Then played his games with China, sold Hangbangtota and placarded the $300m check to Sinhala Modayas (and possibly to West too). Last (Calendar) year was a massive successful year for Ranil’s Appa Diplomacy maneuverings. But he ended December with loosing American GSP+ though America restored it. This year (2018), January started with firing of PCOI on Central Bank looting by his Yahapalanaya partner in election campaign; February was election loss regurgitation and licking the self-inflicted election wound, , March was ailing Muslim Riots and NCM hullabaloo; April going hazy and gloomy of the future of Yahapalanaya. That is about what is going internally, in Lankawe. But his Appa Diplomacy too, appearing has found hurdles on its path.
When America put a halt on GSP+ for countries who opposed Jerusalem Embassy, Ranil prepared to run to Modi and asked for Indian GSP+. But his partner, New King, kicked Ranil out the plane and he jumped into seat and went to India. In any case, that trip did not have produce any fruit on Indian GSP+. March, 2018, UNHRC was not as much success as last year, no cannon was heard there. So they spread news of pulling out of UNHRC. Though Ranil sold the harbor to China and secured the veto, China is casting a big doubt on its ability, but its action.

America’s biggest thorn, the North Korean dictator, Kim Jung Un, after travelling to China, wants to have the differences negotiated with America, instead of depending on China for a standoff. Now, this is raising the question of how much prudent was Ranil when he sold the Hangbangtota for Chinese Veto and displayed the check? Will China stand tall to the occasion if ever the UNHRC refers the War Crime investigation to UN SC? The learned Professor who has been conferring PhD in War Crime is taking a “U” turn and saying “ It is imperative Sri Lanka leaders do their best to avoid falling into the “bad guys” category in the American lexicon,…………. A tactical (Aappa) diplomatic approach is necessary to avoid unnecessary missiles. ‘Doing our best’ is also necessary. (Does that include War Heroes dropping off conferred the PhD in War Crime, but not allowing the foreign legal experts inside the country to examine the crime?)……………….. It is not particularly because of defeating the LTTE that Sri Lanka has fallen into that category. It is largely because of the economic and strategic relations with China. Of course Sri Lanka can go without. .
“Vaelaikarai Utal Iddikka Rasakumarikku Kai Kopplichchuthaam” (When the servant woman started pound the motor, boils started to appear on Princess’s hand to hear that noise.)
Here, Lankawe Rapist Army’s 2009’s Humanitarian Rescue Mission operation of Tamils may appear as Poisonous Gas Bomb attack in the view finder of the President Trump’s loaded gun is the fear of learned Professor. The supplier of poison gas bombs to Lankawe, on its attack over the Mullaithivu refugees, Sonia, is no longer in the view finder of gun’s binoculars. But, voluntarily, with the promise of saving the Old Royals, Ranil put him in front of the locked gun’s view finder.

Lovely comments. MOST Americans have no clue nor care for anything outside their home state. Having taught and having had Veterans who served in Iraq,(2 Purple heart recipients) and an active Duty Marine Officer too(who asked me for a letter of recommendation I proudly gave when he went for his Masters in the Marine corps) will agree with that generalized statement. Those in Embassies and in Political Science programs of elite universities maybe aware of it. But in general the Average American is no different from the Average Sri Lankan or India for that matter. That is something my nearly 20 years of being a University Instructor and being an engaging active student advisor to a group helped me learn. Even now, we do Trivia once a week with fellow faculty who have PhDs, they too just parrot FOXNEWS every day Spring Koha like Trump. I actually am integrated unlike a lot of Sri lankans or Indians who remain in their communities alone and do not on a daily basis interact with all Americans. My students can vouch for that. Yes the Graphic is to show how the Americans view the world. Trump is one of those. OBama had a more nuanced view but failed when he drew a redline and failed to take action. We all know About Bush and Iraq right? Thanks though. Not defending Syria’s alleged gas attack but why not bring proof? Assad is believed to have used gas before. But this time he was defeating ISIS. Who knows? in 25 years time we may discover ISIS also as a superpower creation like Jihadis who were armed by us in the US to fight Soviets.

When Sri Lankans laugh at your politicians and also get fedup, please NOTE at lots of levels, US has some clowns and religious nuts too. The following is shared in a lighter vein.

While Republican Conservative Christian Senator from Texas, Ted Cruz was solicitor general in Texas, his office defended a state ban on sex toy sales, and his office wrote a legal brief arguing that people don’t have the legal right to masturbate.

“There is no substantive-due-process right to stimulate one’s genitals for non-medical purposes unrelated to procreation or outside of an interpersonal relationship,” the brief said.

Enjoy a laugh. May you all have a wonderful week.

Your guess good as ours. None of us know exactly what happened on the ground. However, Syrian’s were warned against the use of poisonous gas on its population. Every bad action has consequences. According to statistic Syrians oil production is next to nothing. Mano you don’t know what you are writing about.
