Waiting For Frodo…

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

“One ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.” ~ JRR Tolkien (The Lord of the Rings)

JRR Tolkien’s One Ring was an instrument of power and suppression, forged to subjugate the free people of Middle Earth. Yet, the first word-picture of the Ring begins by emphasising its seeming ordinariness. When Frodo Baggins, the hobbit to whom the One Ring is entrusted, takes it out of his pocket, it “appeared plain and smooth, without mark or device he could see. The gold looked very fair and pure, and Frodo thought how rich and beautiful its colour, how perfect its roundness. It was an admirable thing and altogether precious. When he took it out he had intended to fling it from him into the very hottest part of the fire. But he found now that he could not do so…” (The Lord of the Rings). A key plot point is thus sketched in few simple sentences. The possessor does not own the Ring; the Ring owns the possessor. The Ring might seem an attractive or useful commodity; but in truth, it is the master.

Anura

Lankan executive presidency is no different. Since 1994, all but one president pledged to abolish the system. None did. Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga spent her first term exercising the powers of the presidency to the fullest. She made an attempt to abolish the presidency via a new constitution only in her second term; and abandoned it in the face of opposition by the UNP, the JVP, and the JHU. Mahinda Rajapaksa pledged to abolish the presidency in 2005 and 2010. During the 2010 parliamentary election, the UPFA asked for a two-thirds mandate to abolish the presidency. Having garnered a near-two thirds majority, Mr. Rajapaksa did the opposite; his 18th Amendment enhanced presidential powers still further and removed presidential term limits. Maithripala Sirisena forgot his promise of abolishment within a year and staged the 52-day coup in the hope of winning a second term. Ranil Wickremesinghe, a strong backer of abolishment while in opposition, focused all his guile on winning a second term once he gained the presidency.

Tolkien’s One Ring can be destroyed only by casting it into the Crack of Doom in the Mount Doom. Frodo braves many dangers, risks his life again and again in this quest. But in the end, the greatest and deadliest challenge he faces is not from enemy armies, murderous orcs or fallen mages but his own lust for the ring, himself.

Abolishing the executive presidency has been a long standing demand and a promise of the JVP. The NPP inherited that demand and promise. During 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, Anura Kumara Dissanayake pledged to abolish the presidency via a new constitution. Instead of reinventing the wheel, his government would begin the constitution-making process from where the Sirisena-Wickremesinghe government left off, he stated.

Yet, when asked about abolishing the executive presidency during a recent marathon interview with Sirasa, President Dissanayake seemed to equivocate. Perhaps because he has nothing much to say. The new government is yet to appoint any committee, council or commission charged with completing the constitution-drafting process. True, the government has much on its plate, starting with such basics as rice and coconuts. But resolving critical everyday issues and making systemic changes are not mutually exclusive tasks. The renovation of rice storage facilities and the drafting of a new constitution can be done at the same time. Worryingly, the government is not only not walking the talk; even the talk has been abandoned. President Dissanayake’s interview was a veritable marathon, yet he made no mention of abolishing the executive presidency until asked about it.

As the mage Gandalf warns Frodo, the One Ring has many ways of subverting hearts and minds. “…the way of the Ring to my heart is by pity, pity by weakness and the desire of strength to do good… I dare not take it… The wish to wield it would be too great for my strength. I shall have such need of it” (ibid). It is not only the power-hungry and the venal who fall under the Ring’s spell. The Ring’s unique power is its ability to subvert even good intentions to further its own ends.

Has Anura Kumara Dissanayake too fallen under the spell of the One Ring? Will he join Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, Mahinda Rajapaksa, Maithripala Sirisena, and Ranil Wickremesinghe as one more leader who, lured by the fatal charms of the presidency, destroyed his own legacy and possible place in history?

Bewitched

In The Lord of the Rings, the quest to reach the Mount Doom begins as a collective endeavour. A fellowship is formed tasked with protecting and assisting the Ring-bearer, Frodo. It consists of hobbits Merry, Pippin, and Sam, mage Gandalf, elf Legolas, dwarf Gimli, and humans Strider (Aragorn) and Boromir.

Boromir’s main concern, his obsession, is saving his native city-state. Patriotism. He enters the fellowship believing, correctly, that the path to salvation lies in the destruction of the One Ring. Yet, as the quest progresses, a change happens and he begins to consider the possibility of using the One Ring to defeat the enemies of his city. Eventually he pleads with Frodo to visit his city and use the ring for a good purpose before destroying it. When Frodo refuses, he accuses Frodo of being in cahoots with the enemy, tries to kill him, and is, in the end, destroyed.

“A madness took me,” he cries when he regains his senses. The executive presidency has had a similar effect on so many Lankans, politicians and non-politicians. Without its lure, the impeachment against President Ranasinghe Premadasa and the fatal breaking up of the UNP would not have happened. Had Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga abolished the presidency, she could have continued with her political life either as prime minister or the leader of opposition. If Mahinda Rajapaksa abolished the executive presidency, he might still be Lanka’s executive (wildly popular) prime minister. Had Maithripala Sirisena or Ranil Wickremesinghe fulfilled that particular promise, they could have spent their retirement as respected elder statesmen and not what they have become – political has-beens forever dreaming of a fortuitous comeback.

Businessman Lalith Kotelawala was once one of the richest men in Sri Lanka. Then, lured by the fatal charms of executive presidency, he began to dip his toes in political waters. In 2001, he inaugurated a peace movement, and seemed to be positioning himself as the ‘Peace Candidate’. He would end up remanded, accused of misappropriating 26billion rupees from one of his companies. Dhammika Perera came to his senses just in time but Dilith Jayaweera remains as besotted with the presidency as ever, despite two humiliating defeats. How his presidential ambitions impact on the health of his businesses remains to be seen; what is indubitable, though, is that desiring the presidency can make even the most hard-headed lose all touch with reality. Thus the bathetic spectacle of Sarath Fonseka on the 2024 presidential election campaign trail with his bomb-damaged vehicle in tow, holding forth to crowds numbering tens as if they were teeming millions.

The tidal wave of support that swept the NPP into unprecedented power in November 2024 seems to be retreating already. In the last couple of months, the NPP has suffered a string of humiliating defeats in corporative elections including in Anuradhapura, Madampagama. Beruwala, Kelaniya, Homagama, Angunakola palassa, Welivitiya, and Divitura. The NPP campaigned heavily for these elections with posters and handbills, so the losses are even more telling. If Anura Kumara Dissanayake thinks he can abolish the executive presidency in his second term, these results should make him think twice. Unlike the SLFP, the SLPP, the UNP or the SJB, the NPP does not have a substantial core vote-base it can fall back on (its core vote-base is around 3%). Plus, Anura Kumara Dissanayake is the only president who failed to win with a majority vote. Thus his chances of a second term are far slimmer than those of any of his predecessors.

The NPP manifesto is more a wish-list than a plan of action. Abolishing the executive presidency is one of the few major promises the government can keep, without endangering the economy with unsustainably lavish spending. The government has the requisite majority in parliament to get a new constitution through and a good chance of winning in a referendum. If the stumbling block is the shape of a new electoral system, as President Dissanayake seemed to indicate at the Sirasa interview, then a committee of experts can be appointed to consider the many hybrid versions out there in the world and come up with an answer suitable to specific Lankan conditions.

But if a journey doesn’t begin, how can it reach its desired destination?

Dysfunctional

When the fellowship of the Ring is sundered, Frodo and his faithful servant Sam head to Mount Doom on their own. During that perilous journey, their relationship evolves and solidifies into a deep and fraternal friendship. At Mount Doom, Frodo is attacked and almost killed. When he is eventually saved by Sam, Frodo falls into despondency believing the Ring had fallen into enemy hands. Sam tells him that he saved the Ring by secreting it on his person. An elated Frodo calls Sam a marvel. “Then quickly and strangely his tone changed. ‘Give it to me!’ he cried, standing up, holding out a trembling hand… Sam had changed before his very eyes into an orc…leering and pawing at his treasure…” Frodo recovers from his madness but the harrowing scene illustrates how the Ring impairs not just Middle Earth’s freedom but also the life of its bearer.

The lust for the One Ring is supremely dysfunctional. It can destroy any institution or relationship. Presidency was the reason for the fatal division between Maithripala Sirisena and Ranil Wickremesinghe, and Ranil Wickremesinghe and Sajith Premadasa. Those twin divides paved the way for Gotabaya presidency and all the disasters which followed in its wake. Now both the SJB and UNP are in danger of further fragmentation, due to the presidential ambitions of second level leaders who dream of replacing Sajith/Ranil as the next presidential candidate.

Divisions caused by presidential ambitions have become an almost a law in Lankan politics. There’s no reason to think the NPP/JVP could resist this tendency towards fragmentation. It would be beyond the powers of even a Delphic Oracle to know how many NPP/JVP leaders are dreaming of stepping into Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s presidential shoes, in the fullness of time.

Parliamentary systems are primarily about parties. Presidential systems are primarily about individuals. In Sri Lanka, this begins with the showcasing of presidential candidates as super-humans and ends with soon-to-be former presidents trying to create palatial official residences to enjoy their retirement. JR Jayewardene’s egregious Presidents Entitlement Act (No. 4 of 1986) has legalised such gross abuses of power. The ongoing controversy about the money spent on maintaining former presidents, even as more than quarter of Lankans live in poverty, stems from the individual-centric nature of this system and the abuse of power for personal gain inherent within it. Nothing illustrates this more than the statement made by Minister Nalinda Jayatissa in parliament that in 2023 more than 15million rupees of public money was spent on installing an escalator in former president Mahinda Rajapaksa’s official residence. Why on earth would a two-storey house need an escalator. An elevator, yes, but an escalator? Such madness would continue so long as the executive presidency remains.

The first couple of years of a new government is the best time for constitutional changes. The 1972 and 1978 constitutions as well as 18th, 19th, 20th, and 21st Amendments were effected within this time frame. If the NPP government is not to join the ranks of other serial promise-breakers, if it is to work seriously to abolish the presidency via a new constitution, the work has to begin now. If not, the window of opportunity will close, and no meaningful constitutional change will be possible.

If Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga kept her promise of abolishment, Sri Lanka would have been spared the Mahinda Rajapaksa presidency and the contagion which is Rajapaksa politics. If Maithripala Sirisena kept his promise, Sri Lanka would have been spared the Gotabaya Rajapaksa presidency and every disaster which followed in its wake, bankruptcy downwards. A worse outcome may result, if Anura Kumara Dissanayake too fails to honour is promise.

Sri Lanka has been waiting from 1994 for a Frodo Baggins to take the One Ring of executive presidency and cast it into the Crack of Doom. Anura Kumara Dissanayake is the fifth president to don the garb of the hobbit of Bag End, Hobbiton. Is he the real thing or another imposter? The signs are not propitious, but only time can really tell.

Tisaranee’s comparison, or analogy of Frodo Baggins’ Ring with the Executive Presidency of Sri Lanka is brilliant! Possession of a power like that holds the possessor in thrall, goes to his head and turns him into something like a drug addict. It needs a person with great strength of character to voluntarily cast aside all that power. Will president AKD measure up?

No Lankan writer has impressed me the way TG does with clarity in her writing. She truly believes in what she writes. Hence there is NO mincing of words, no word plays, no stereotyping, no normalizing , or intellectualizing…… etc . She just got me out of my own denial.

Yes, I’m confident that AKD will get rid of the Executive Presidency. There are others than Tissaranee who are afraid that he, and the rest of the NPP, may give in to the temptation to hold on to it, and so it is good that TG has written all this, and written it very well.

Every Leader makes promises; No leader keeps them.
Maithripala Sirisena was the accidental President; How do you expect him to keep any.

“A worse outcome may result, if Anura Kumara Dissanayake too fails to honour is promise.”
It is 100% true if AKD fails to not only honour his promises but also honour others right expectations to save this country from falling the country into trap of racism and majority religious dominance. I believe that when AKD says there is no space for racism he includes majority religious dominance as well. In equality principle there is no space for difference between religion, race and language. Unfortunately, AKD deliberately or not deliberately do not talk about how he intends to solve the problems of the Tamil speaking people who are still in majority in the North East even after Sinhalese colonisation programs by past 76 governments in order to change the population distribution. There are two possible outcomes. This government have the support of the people and two third majority. It can solve the problems by sharing the power or it can strengthen Sinhala only Buddhist Only unitary government similar to the past 76 years.

Ajith, Sinhala only Buddhist only unitary government did not work all these years and will never work as it eliminates part of the population. All must be Sri Lankan to get some uniformity to come into union with the Creator God of the universe, Jehovah God. All else will fail.

      Ajith ,

A K D has come a long way for making his dreams real . In his journey ,
ending racism is the most unreal one . Their first cabinet is an example
for this . Ignoring the importance of taking on board a Muslim member .
And the worst is , not listening to concerned voices from the community
about the seriousness of the issue . They may talk tons but in action the
motive is clear . They are surely playing the racist card better than the
others and in a way not visible to all eyes . But eagle eyes are watching .
They think they are doing things the right way . Right at the moment ,
they are busy trying to win Foreign Sources with rewards , offering projects
and contracts in return for what is coming in from those sources . It is
difficult for people like me to see the price of rice from 55 cents to more than
Rs 260 and not freely available at the price . Many things are being done
to please India and China . Suppose the crowd working in the Mideast has
to come back home due to unavoidable circumstance ? Can you imagine ?
Already Trump has started deportation . He has started freezing USAID
to its beneficiaries . Are we ready ? It is not the A K D and the lot who decide
to run a Globalised nation .

          Not Rs 55 . I said Cents 55 . About 1962 – 65 price . I was a kid then .
The point was ” in our life time it has peaked this high . ” people
like me means , people of my age . You might try to win it saying
it could be even less before that . I am talking here about my life
experience that raise my eyebrows .

YouTubers who use social media to distorting facts or making fun of
everything for their benefit . Srilankans are badly misled by this
social media beyond any imagination . It has now become narcotic .
A country can not go like this . We have come to a point where
now everybody talks and nobody listens to anything . The whole
country is a parliament . Nobody is natural anymore and people are
becoming as much fakes as they can . Thanks for your reply again .

            Whywhy,
When rice was 55 cents, most people were lucky to get paid 4 rupees a day. So, in relation to that, rice is cheaper today than then. But I agree, it should be cheaper than 260.

Nice to hear you saying something every time . Yes , it was between 4-6
rupees a day depending on the type of job . And life was easier with
easy going people of the epoch . People were not much educated and
because of that they were quite natural in my view .

        .
However, I continue to trust😃 AKD’s commitment to non-racism. And the rest of the NPP? I think it true that they may not realise the seriousness of the issue, but they are not really chauvinistic. Please keep up the pressure.

ways . ” When Asoka …………..we felt that Rizvie Salli could have been

I would like AKD to hold on to the RING until the WRONG DOERS of the PAST have been subjected to
face due JUDICIAL inquiries. We the SL citizens are waiting for it to happen as quickly as possible.
Illgotten wealth/assets NEEDS to be returned to the treasury and the guilty spend rest [most] of their life-span in prison. So many premature deaths of Innocent SL citizens due to these corrupt rulers needed to be sorted out BEFORE AKD can throw away the RING!
With the two-thirds majority in the parliament HE can pass amendments to the constitution to SPEED UP the delivery of JUSTICE. Let us hope the year 2025 isn’t wasted by procrastination.

The last person I thought would fall for the trap of one-eye-ism ……is Thisaranee!

Politicians, political-pundits, opinion-setters, writers usually need one thing to focus on. Mshavelli-Project was a classic example. ……. The overriding opinion at the time was ……. get Mahavelli-Project done/finished …….. and all our problems will be solved: that was the main focus then. ……… Have people forgotten now?

Now it’s the Executive Presidency. …… Executive Presidency is the great villain: get rid of the goddamn thing and all our problems will be solved!

Sure, Executive Presidency should be gotten rid of ……… but for entirely different reasons. But it’s not going to solve any of our problems: Lankans will be Lankans!

The problem is not with the Executive Presidency ……. but the true to form Lankan traits of the Lankans who occupied it! …….. No person worthy of the office has ever been elected: until AKD.

In the meantime, I’ve started believing in God, no thanks to DTG!

I’m just flabbergasted by the handiwork of the man upstairs in the clouds …….. how AKD’s ascendency came about. How he put/arranged all the right things in all the right places …….. how he got rid of unworthy troublemakers Wimal Weerawansa and Kumar Gunaratnam and bestowed the leadership on AKD: a rare rare rare Lankan with all the right things mixed in him that only appear once in 2500 years.

Long live the Executive Presidency …… and let us all thank God …… for small mercies …….

Holy Father thou art in heaven …… DTG care to finish the rest? ……. I’ve forgotten ……….

I suppose it is OK for a person who clearly identifies himself to accuse an unidentified public company of misbehaviour “in the public interest”, but not to reveal that he himself has/had interests in said company……..

                      Amrit dear,
Let’s not get into pointless slanging matches. You, because you use your real name, are exposed as a Page family member. I may or may not be one. You had better get yourself a good alias.

                    Hello Amrit,
I have defended the use of Pseudonyms previously in these CT Comments. First of all it is common usage in YouTube and many other International Platforms. If you want to be known use FaceBook, X(Twitter), Sub Stack, WhatsApp or LinkedIn etc.
There are contributors on CT that use threatening language, sometimes almost subliminal. These come from both sides of a brutal Civil War that is still fresh in their minds.
Sri Lanka does not have a great record in the Protection of Human Rights or Free Speech. To give an example, my wife (Sinhalese) worries that I could be arrested for my Critiques of Buddhism. It has happened here, to other people, and discussed in these Columns. In many Countries mostly Islamic, as an Atheist, I would be Barred from the Country, Arrested or Worse.
I try not to insult or demean people’s intelligence, sometimes I will use Sarcasm or Ironic Comments, but nothing Malicious or Malevolent (hopefully).
Finally it is up to the CT Admins to decide if a Comment breaches their Guidelines. If we don’t agree with the Guidelines that’s our problem.
                    Best regards

This will never happen. The LTTE slaughtered monks in cold blood and tried to blow up Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth). There was no ethnic retaliation from the SB side. Even Black July 1983 occurred because of Indian interference. India should have deported Prabhakaran when he was arrested in Tamil Nadu after a fight with another guerilla. This would have prevented not only Black July 1983, but the entire civil war.

“Karunanidhi promptly appealed to his ally, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, to intervene and ask the then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M G Ramachandran to release Prabhakaran and Umamaheswaran.

To dramatise the situation further, LTTE leaders Kittu and Pulendran threatened to jump from the top of the LIC Building.”

                  Nathan and all,
Many of us at CT are anonymous. If we behave neutrally on any issue, there are those who jump to conclusions. Lester has branded us “Tiger supporters” only because we have no bias.
I don’t think we suffer from any disease because we are anonymous commenters. Like it or not, believe it or not, the country is a hell, and many innocent people (not just prominent ones) have been killed illegally in ways the world does not understand. No justice has been served for anyone of the victimized families. So that is why we dont disclose our whereabouts. Those in power today (JVP disguised as NPP) have killed countless number of young people in 1989 up to 1992, and the brutal media seems not to say a single word about it today.

The fact is in poor Sri Lanka business houses came to be dominated by recent immigrants from India ,Pakistan and Iran. The British let them in without considering the opinions of the locals.. Some of them converted to the British master’s religion and even adopted English sounding names to advance their money making schemes.

In the wider world these Indians/Pakis/Arabs are not famous for their business ethics. In fact they are considered incurably corrupt. They are only interested in sucking out everything from whichever country they settle in.

In Sri Lanka, these parasites also have become elite and standard setters with the collaboration of rascals like Ranil .

The confusion of ethics and standards created by an utterly exploitative and alien elite has led to the destruction of the country.

                    Hello Deepthi,
I don’t profess to be half Scottish. Can you show me where I said this?
Following my Father’s line and Mother’s line back to the 1600s I have no other Nationalities except Scots.
Ethnicity and Nationality are two different things. On my Father’s side there are Clan Scots, Breton, Orcadian Viking and Ancient Welsh. On my Mother’s side mainly Pictish (Indigenous North East Scotland) with a little Clan Scots and farther back some Barclay Lairds (Norman French).
Please check your facts before posting.
I find OC’s posts Entertaining, Humorous, Educational and to the point, with the odd derogatory term thrown in for good measure. It is up to the CT Admins to determine if any content breaches their Guidelines.

Are you his doppelganger? You must be familiar with “Edmund Blackadder.” Edmund was a failure at everything he did and never won the father’s approval. Despite his infinite stupidity, Edmund was always scheming for more. That is the best analogy to your companion here. There is nothing “entertaining, humorous, or educational” from that direction. Multiple people have returned a verdict of stupid (Asoka) or liar (Jeevan Hoole). Actually this is a problem outlined in economics, which is worth mentioning briefly. When you have a free resource, the “bottom rung” of people will abuse it. Therefore, it goes without saying that much of the content on social media has no value beyond entertainment.

          Scot,

Beautiful Latin there, religious context not withstanding. Nomine is name. Patrus is father. Fili is son. Et = and. Spiritus Sancti is spirit sacred. With that aside, Amrit Muttukumaru has raised a good point. Can you take anonymous people seriously? I certainly don’t, at least the ones who go the extra distance to retain their anonymity.

Then why are you still “Anonymous”?
My Catholic friends at School knew many Latin Phrases and their English Translation, which for them was “In the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost”, but none of them could explain to me what the Holy Ghost was.
And “Romanes eunt domus” is wrong, it should be “Romani ite domum” – so funny🤣.

              Scot,

“Then why are you still “Anonymous”?”

I am slightly more anonymous than you. Have given the ethnicity, educational background, location, etc. Amit’s point is that we don’t know anything about “Tisaranee Gunasekara.” It could be the pen name of a man or woman. This individual has been criticizing the Sri Lankan Government for many years, the Rajapakses in particular. Some of the criticism may in fact be valid. However, we can say little about the author’s motivations. If “Tisaranee” turns out to be “Ranil” or “Chandrika”, readers would have an entirely different perspective. What is the point here… an opinion piece reflects the values of the author. Clearly, TG has some grievance against the Rajapakses. We don’t know exactly what that grievance is – or at the minimum, we cannot put it in the proper context – unless we know who the true TG is.

                Hello Lester,
It is fairly simple to find Articles gong back to at least 2012 by Tisaranee Gunasekara. She has also collaborated with other Writers/Journalists, so is obviously known by them.
Having looked at quite a few of her Articles I cannot find anything offensive in what she says.
“TG has some grievance against the Rajapakses” – I thought everyone did.
If she has said anything that is untrue, then highlight it. CT is a Newspaper that encourages debate.
From her articles in various Newspapers and Journals I would say with a high probability that she is an Academic (definitely not Ranil or Sajith).
I am Amazed and Puzzled that I agree with nearly everything that I have read so far by her.
By the way her Father was Sena Gunasekera a Trade Unionist in Lake House Publishers so she is not anonymous.

I think she keeps off the radar to avoid unwelcome attention. She was pretty active publicly at an outfit called the Premadasa Centre in the early 90’s with Dr.DJ, but they’ve been on divergent paths since. Strange that the ostensibly all-knowing pants-less genius is ignorant of all this.

            Hello OC,
Yes or they are Brothers. However I think that there are too many Indians and other South Asians in Birmingham for Lester’s liking. However take your pick from Rev Fr Sylvester Adeniyi (Sylvester = Lester?) from West Bromwich, or the original one Rev Fr Prem Jayalath Fernando from Kidlington, Oxfordshire. He belongs to the Diocese of Birmingham and is University Chaplain to the Oxford Brookes University. This is where the AI Degree fits in. He is supposed to have this “DPhil from University of Cambridge UK, in Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligent Systems in 2004” Of course this would fit in with Lester’s Israeli leanings. This is just what the Israelis use for their Palestinian CCTV Surveillance Programs. Perhaps he met them on his course or “worked” for them? Have a look at his previous CT posts and do a bit of English Idiom usage comparison with Lester’s.

          .
Take it out of the statute books, or if you want to keep it at least implement it. Think of Premalal Jayasekera (Choka Malli of Ratnapura); he was sentenced to death but because it suited some people’s politics he was catapulted into Parliament, instead of completing a reasonable length of tie in jail.
          .
This is a serious topic, and we shouldn’t be discussing as just an aside.

He/NPP will only get a second term if he/NPP abolish the executive presidency(EP) .I guess the timing of abolishing the EP needs to be carefully balanced. He need the powers of EP to go after the Rajapkasas and other corrupt politicians and corrupt officials in the Govt , Corporate and Defence sector. Abolition of the EP needs to be followed by a General Election with perhaps AKD as the prospective PM.
So its a complex affair and trust he will honour his election manifesto.

        Another point LS.
        .
When the draft is presented to the people for approval, there will be lots of debate.
        .
I think it certain that the abolition of the Presidency will be so popular that losing that referendum seems unthinkable.
        .
However, I think it would be quite in order to modify what has been put before the people (I’m thinking of minor improvements only) before being passed into law with the two-thirds majority in Parliament. I hope that I’m not contradicting myself here.
        .
It seems almost a now or never chance.
        .

Referendum ? what Referendum? JR did not hold a referendum when he introduced EP. Mahinda did not hold a referendum when he increased the power of EP.

The people have given him 2/3rd majority. Not only that the people have kicked out all the main stream political parties who governed the country for the last 70 odd years and riven the country to bankruptcy and racial division.
        AKD better act!

      3

Thanks, Rajash. I agree with all that.
      .
LankaScot, yes, there must be a referendum before the new constitution is accepted. So far not one of our constitutions has been accepted by the people. AKD himself has made that observation.
      .
It will take at least two years for it to be ready. Right now we’ve had a surfeit of elections. We’ve got to have Local Government elections in a few months. I’m not particular about Provincial Council elections, but this referendum is essential.

Tisaranee (i.e., the refugee of the Triple Gem of the Buddha, who discarded it for the hate politics of Marx) fails to realize that the executive presidency is at least a Trinity. There is indeed the Godhead (President), the Holy Ghost (the constitution) and the Son (saviour of the resulting ethnic and economic mess ), an inextricable unity, as theologians have told us since St Paul. Tisaranee knows of Christianity’s many wars, the heretics burnt, the witch hunts against Thurogi. Removing the executive presidency needs a constitutional re-write, and a revisit of the Ethnic questions. Those will, with 100% certainty, re-ignit ethnic strife. In the south, no significant violence by civilians attacking Tamil or Sinhala civilans happened since 1983 Black July, although the LTTE tried hard to rekindle pogroms by provocative attacks, e.g., on the Temple of the Tooth, on Monks in Aranthalawa, and on praying Muslims in Katthankudy. So, if AKD wishes to abolish the Presidency, he should only use an amendment and NOT attempt a new constitution. That should await another 10 years, till ethnic wounds heal.

    Hi TG,
Well presented. This mess was created by JR. If an intelligent executive existed, many things would have happened. Unfortunately dimwits are doing politics here.

One way of coming out of this mess would be to reshuffle the powers and regional demarcations for good governance. Instead of the present three pillars, rearrange to Parliament, Judiciary and Regulatory Commission. Most of the executive functions transfered to regulatory commision without political influence.

That is a good description of the IMF. The IMF is the master now. One has to be careful when he borrows money. I hardly use leverage for stocks, despite the low IR.

You are correct that the AI strategy has to be reevaluated, if DeepSeek results are genuine. However, I sold most of the AI stocks before DeepSeek occurred, so my loss was minimal. Since the beginning of January this year, my strategy has been to “short sell” the stock of worthless companies. It is working out well so far. One does not need book knowledge to be a profitable investor. What is required is patience and “emotional” intelligence. It would be good training for an M15 agent.

            Scot,

I have read the biography of Mengele. After WWII, he hid in Paraguay and Brazil. He was desperate to go back to Germany (partly because he felt South Americans were “inferior”), but they would have put him on trial for war crimes. Anyway, Mengele hid in Brazil under a false name. Terrified that Mossad would find him. They came very close. He got away because Brazil is such a large country and he was hiding in a very rural part. Eichmann was not so lucky. Mossad caught up to him in Buenos Aires. The bottom line is that Mossad never gives up. In the movie “Munich”, you can see Mossad carefully tracking down every militant involved in the “Black September” of 1972 and eliminating them. I say all this because if Sri Lanka had had a similar spy agency to eliminate xyz LTTE affiliate, the war would have ended far more quickly.

                Scot,

You must be knowing that all countries use “extra judicial” methods when it comes to gathering intelligence. For example, if the Yanks/NATO captured a member of the Taliban, they would hand that guy to the Pakistanis. As a method of interrogation, torture is not legal in the States, but it is legal in Pakistan. To avoid the issue of indefinite imprisonment, the Yanks built a facility called “Guantanamo Bay” near Cuba. I am sure MI5 operates the same way. Discrete locations to torture as needed, with tacit government approval. You will not hear about it in the Daily Mail. If you’ve seen the movie “Cleanskin” with Sean Bean, you can understand the game is very volatile. The terrorist has to be eliminated before the bomb goes off, not before the Magistrate gives a search warrant.

Jack Straw was a Liar. He knew all about the illegal arrest and detention of people across the World and the help that the UK was giving to the US program of “Extraordinary Rendition”. I knew he was lying.
“In a landmark judgment the Supreme Court has today ruled that the legal case against the former Foreign Secretary Jack Straw and former senior MI6 officer, Sir Mark Allen, alleging that they were both unlawfully involved in the illegal rendition of a Libyan man and his pregnant wife to Gaddafi’s Libya in 2004, can be heard in a UK Court” https://www.leighday.co.uk/news/news/2017-news/highest-uk-court-gives-green-light-to-legal-action-against-jack-straw-and-former-head-of-mi6-over-illegal-rendition/

It is not Legal, and the UK Facilitation of it was also Illegal. Neither is Torture, Pakistan has signed up to the United Nations Convention Against Torture, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). Yes they still do Torture People.

                      Scot,

                      You have to be realistic.

“On July 7, 2005 at 8:49 AM, three bombs exploded on London underground trains within 50 seconds of each other. An hour later a fourth bomb exploded on the upper deck of a bus. Over 700 people were injured and 53 killed in the worst attack on the United Kingdom since World War II.”

I know you’re going to say something clever like you shook hands with one of the bombers and he promised not to do it again. What do you say to the victims of the bombings who want some justice? Or the citizens who demand the government ensure their safety at any cost?

                      Hello Lester,
Have you forgotten that I was on one of the first Tube Trains on the Piccadilly Line to run after the Bombings having arrived at King’s Cross Station? I passed through Russell Square near where the Bomb went off.
Unlike you I condemn all killings of Civilians whether by Terrorist Actions or State Genocide. I also abhor Extra Judicial Killings.
I passed through Lockerbie in December 1988 a couple of hours before the Pan Am Flight was blown up.
I was working with a Group of American Programmers at our Milton Keynes Office in 2001 when we saw the first News and Pictures on TV of the 9/11 Attacks. Although they were all from Texas, they still felt it was better to return to the US.
One of my colleagues did some analysis on the Mull of Kintyre Chinook Crash that killed many Senior Intelligence Personnel back in 1994. He was involved in investigating the Fadec System Failure that caused the Crash. This ruled out any Terrorist Actions. The Military Top Brass for years blamed Pilot Error.
So I am well aware of the effects of Terrorist Actions on Civilians and the Military.
                      Best regards

                      Scot,

Terrorism cannot be stopped without resorting to extra-judicial measures. Again, I invite you to watch the movie called “Cleanskin.” It’s fictitious but highlights the difficulties in capturing the terrorist. The terrorist is part of a network. The network has safehouses to shelter the terrorist. By the time you bust one safehouse, the terrorist has escaped to another. To reach the terrorist himself and prevent an attack, you have to interrogate others in the network, ideally one of his handlers. This is where “extra-judicial” comes into play. Disabling the entire network is impossible, as we saw with the IRA and FARC. The network may be spread out (as with Hamas leaders hiding in Qatar) and there may be spies embedded in the civilian population. Kadirgimir’s gardener was an LTTE agent, while the LTTE was able to bribe Premadasa’s valet to breach the security perimeter. A supposedly pregnant woman at the Army base tried to blow up Fonseka. You can see that the “attack” itself is the last step. Before that, the network gathers intelligence and then the attack commences at the optimal time.

                      5

One of the goals of the terrorists or militants is always to eliminate seniors, as these individuals are not easily replacable. If you are familiar with Reinhard Heydrich, the Czech “Resistance” took him out by watching his route every day. Heydrich had a predictable route that included a stretch of road that was relatively isolated, bordered by trees, with a sharp bend and a steep embankment. A similar method (knowing the route) was used to try and assassinate Gothabaya via three-wheeler.

You asked “I know that in some instances it may seem justified, but where do we draw the line?”
My answer is, Whenever it breaches Internationally agreed Laws or Signed Conventions.
The problem is who will enforce such Laws when Countries act with Impunity, supported by Powerful States like the USA.
If the UN fails to assert International Law then the Old “Rules based International Order” has gone. That’s the road to Chaos.

I know of only one “RING” that AKD and the NPP Government have got encircled into and that is the “Law Enforcement” comprised of the Police (composed of various units), Attorney General’s Department, and some “Judges” in the Judiciary.

This “Encirclement” was demonstrated by a few of the cases that were brought before the Judiciary. An example was the case against ex-Minister Anura Proyadashana Yap. The ex-Minister was indicted for causing a loss and misappropriating funds under “The Public Property Act”. This indictment required a certificate issued by a Police Officer not less than an ASP. This is an “Unbailable” offense. But the parties indicted were released on bail. How was that?

The required certificate was available to courts. But the Judge said it was not there. Then why was AG not present to produce it? What the Police Officer who appeared in court did not deliver when it was readily available on the file?

What do you think of the (1) AG (2) The Police Officer and (3) The Judge?

Isn’t it a “RING”? What do the Minister of Justice and the Minister of Security (Police) have to say? Aren’t you encircled in a “RING”? Getting out of it not that easy.

If your politics are slightly to the left of Douglas Murray or Ben Gvir, then Lester will attack you. There are people in the World that have no Empathy for the suffering of others. For them “might is right” no matter what Atrocities they commit. Lester looks at all Palestinians (not just Hamas) as comparable to LTTE Combatants, and himself and the Rajapaksas as the Israelis. He is compelled to support/excuse the Atrocities committed by the Sri Lankan Armed Forces, partly because one (or more) of his relatives was engaged in them. He also knows that the Israelis provided much Support and Training to the Sri Lankan Forces. Their methods in Gaza are very similar to what happened in the North towards the end of the Civil War. The Civil War is finished (although the Armed Forces effectively occupy the North) but Gaza is not.
        Best regards

          Scot,

Easy to talk about empathy and suffering in an AC office. A little different on the battlefield, with bullets flying past your brain. The best thing for civilians to do in a war zone is get out of the war zone ASAP… that’s why it’s called a war zone. Don’t believe the media spin. There is no safe space in a war zone. Everything and everyone is a target. A pilot is trained to fly, a doctor is trained to heal, a soldier is trained to kill. Soldiers are essentially de-sensitized and de-conditioned for the process: https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-30573936. Since the war zone presents a “complex environment” some mistakes will happen, e.g. civilians will die unnecessarily. But the vast majority of soldiers are professionals and will function as their training dictates.

Yes, of course, and then lecture those who stayed behind on how to be patriotic. From a safe distance of course.

In 1971 estimated number of death in the South was about 18,000, between 1987 and 1991 it was 60,000 or more according to state sources. Now can you explain to us those how 78,000 or more people died, did they collectively committed suicide? Can you confirm if these people were JVP murderers?

We can deal with the estimated number of people who were killed between 1976 and 2009 in the North East another time.

          Dear LS,
          .
I have a kind request from you. I have been attacked, I have done a hacking attack to SM.. This is the assumption he had about me for the past 6 months. Can you explain to him what you mean by “hacking”?

He grew old in his cave in Bandarawela, so I can well imagine his mental state. Also, he was thrown out of his family a long time ago. Looking back, the situation is like the situation of “Ruchira” who is undergoing treatment now, he should have been in a mental rehabilitation center.
          .
I don’t think I ever knew that I hacked other people’s computers. This man is blaming me for no good reason. He is a frog in a well, he doesn’t seem to know much, but that is his life. But it is unbearable to attack me and OC because he is anonymous. This man is in his late 70s, but he behaves like a teenager. He thought AKD would come with “Alandin’s Wonder Lamp”, but today, people are preparing to line up like they did 3 years ago.

In Europe, if SM made such accusations against someone, it could become a punishable act, but SM (formerly known as a high school teacher) seems to not know the basics.

            LM,
I did ask him for details a while ago, but he didn’t reply. Maybe he doesn’t know what hacking is.

As always, a refreshing perspective of reality by TG.

AKD is charismatic, a desplined public speaker & I am sure his intentions are genuine but his party was elected on the promise of ending blatant corruption, abuse of power & wasting public money, as well as, the fact that there was no other credible leadership alternative. TG is not impressed with the NPP manifesto, a ‘wish list’ & I agree. Apart from ‘whiter than driven snow’ commitment when it comes to corruption , the NPP had no comprehensive strategy that could have been turned into an action plan. The wheels of justice may be moving slowly but I hope, at least, the ‘not fit for purpose’ all powerful Presidency will be abolished, along with all the perks & privileges of parliamentarians which are a burden on the people. If AKD is unable to fulfil this pledge for whatever the reason, then he is no better than the past self-serving Presidents we have had.

is a balanced comment; I’m glad that you are now appreciative of the “genuineness” of AKD.🧭 Having some reservations is quite in order.
      .
Wasn’t there some debate about the right that commenters have a right to anonymity? As all know, I went as far as giving my NIC number and my postal address. Perhaps that was too far! As you realise, I have a pretty shrewd idea as to who you are. But I will always guard that knowledge. Basically, I respect you!
      .
But not the giver-of-chocolates, who then turns hacker. There is no moderation in his comments – just pure hate. But let me confess my perfidy which has led to his not being anonymous any more. With him being so unfair, I, too, had to stray from the straight and narrow.
      .
Although I sometimes get impatient with you, I have immense respect for you🤔.
      .
      Best wishes,🤗

        Raj,
Posting chocolates and other goodies to a venous monger was an even bigger mistake. This man’s naivity has no limit. I thought this man would have been punished by karmic punishment for all his sins by promoting former murderers as leaders of this country.Oh, no, he is still alive… OMG.

Hate is being sowed by AKD today, but having done nothing by him yet, or near to any pledges the entire bunch of liar made to the very stupid nation.

Is it now becoming clear to everyone that the people voted for a stupid group that cannot even properly prepare a tender for rice import, not once for the 4th time, if the leaders act like that how can we ever think of real change? We can wait for ages. Pig might fly !

Raj you always told the truth about the JVPs who were hiding behind the robes of the NPP. Now you can see, that you were totally right
        .
Today, the entire country has been destroyed by the release of 323 containers full of red-labeled goods about 10 years ago, and the ruling government did nothing about it.

We are entitled to our own opinions, therefore, getting worked up is pointless unless able to clarify your stand.

Anyway, though I respect AKD as a person, I may not necessarily agree with his political affiliations. I doubted their capability of governing the country because if they were such a competent bunch, they would have had a strategy & planned every step if they were to come in to power. Instead, all they could emphasise was the fact that they were clean as driven snow & by eliminating corruption & bringing back the stolen loot, everything would be tickety boo. I suppose now they must be finding out that walking the talk is not a walk in in the park

            Raj,
Even though we respect other people’s values, others don’t – maybe because we live abroad. Consider what SM says about my opinion. That is the sad reality. From the beginning, I thought AKD was a joke. Even my sister is good at talking, but she couldn’t hold a single job in her entire life. However, from what she explains, everyone thought she would be very successful. Now the JVP people are proving that it is not easy to do practical politics while being in the ruling party. Besides, numbers do not always reflect a practical working day. That is because you have to work with people. We are all different, as we see, like the diversity of finger sizes on the hand. Moreover, I should not be a bad person, because I did not respect AKD and their JVP image. My subconscious told me that I could not speak in accordance with the story. Today, it is becoming clearer day by day. However, our SM, who has a selfish opinion on many things, is starting to accuse me of not respecting his opinions. Whether his opinions are good or bad is up to the readership.

        SM

Thank you for having faith in me.

We are entitled to our own observations on which we can make judgments. Right or wrong, its a personal opinion on which others can agree or disagree without making it personal.

I have always stated that I considered AK above the average SL politician but it is his JVP connections that I was sceptic about, & still is. You may recall my comment for the NPP to publish their manifesto early, particularly, details of their sources of funding & a list of ‘who is who’, the key people, if they were to form a govt. Much of the embarrassment & possible loss of faith the NPP face now could have been avoided if they were organised & had a master plan. Seems they waited till they were elected to start the ball rolling

      Raj,

We’ve had just too much of politics recently.
I had decided to stop commenting much, but this appears to be the tenth comment that I’m making on this article. The CT moderators have thought fit🤭 to approve all my comments, but please look at the preceding nine. Each has drawn a disapproval. No approvals doesn’t matter. Do you think🤔 that there was anything dangerous in any except, perhaps, the comment just above this.
      .
I don’t have to tell you from which sick mind they have come, do I? A mind which had, about a week ago, speculated that I may have committed suicide⁉ How full of hatred, as I have already said.

Thisaranee’s opinions are generally far opposed to what the people really want. Trying to show off various books and articles she has read doesn’t make her clever.

I think Thisaranee will only be happy if Ranil W is President, Arjun Ranatunga PM and Dayan Jayatilleka Foreign minister. That will be the perfect country !

When MR is no more she will substitute Anura Dissanayake in his place and go on writing poetry against him too.

The corrupt diaspora will cheer her on

        OC,
Ms Desperate Deepthi criticizes LS and each of us as if she was a native Brit. Manel Fonseka is half British, she never boasted about her English life.

As we know, LS grew up and went to school in Scotland and has experienced a lot in his life compared to many others, such as our most known self-proclaimed IQ genius who go out of their way to boast about the little he has achieved in this life.
        .
        Can you imagine?
        :
And Deepthi like any naive woman in lanken village supports Rajapakshes but calls Ranil a villain. Anyone with a sound health would not avoid putting the blame on Rajapakshes and their rascal politics.

I think Deepthis or the like and their thought patterns can be well analyzed if we assign PhD STUDENT to work on a thesis on the topic of “Superiority complex of some colonized people with emphasis on Deepthi Silva’s peculiarity”. Funny !

A conquerors language is far better than the language you do your thinking in .

I can see dimwit Leela is 100% South Asian !
