The new General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Duminda Dissanayake says that the National Freedom Front led by MP Wimal Weerawansa does not belong to the coalition United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA).
Dissanayake told the above in response to a comment made by Weerawansa that President Maithripala Sirisena had agreed to allow the opposition to select its own leader.
Dissanayake said that Weerawansa cannot make such a statement as his NFF was not a major partner in the UPFA coalition. According to Dissanayake there are only three major parties with such decision making powers within the UPFA .
However Dissanayake did not mention the names of these three parties other than going on to say that the NFF definitely was not one of those.
The Anuradhapura district parliamentarian considered a close ally of Sirisena said that the decision taken by the President on choosing the opposition leader was a commendable one.
The President had a special meeting on Monday with the affiliated party leaders of the UPFA at his residence.
Weerawansa expressing views to the media afterwards said the President told them that the Opposition Leader should be appointed based on the consent of a majority of the parliamentarians of the opposition.
Meanwhile the media reported that Weerawansa had tendered an apology to Sirisena during the Monday’s meeting with the President.

The President in turn had told Weerawansa “let bygones be bygones”.
Both Weerawansa and his wife are currently under the microscope of the dreaded FCID and the CID for various malpractices.
Shashi Weerawansa , the wife of Wimal Weerawansa, has used a falsified documents to obtain a passport, the CID had informed the Court recently.
The CID had told the court that the investigations have revealed that Weerawansa’s wife used a fake birth certificate and a fake national identity card (NIC) to obtain a diplomatic passport. Sashi Weerawansa is alleged to have obtained diplomatic and general passports by submitting birth certificates with forged names and dates of birth.
