What Happened To The Abolition Of Executive Presidency?

By Vishwamithra

“To grow up requires a whole life but to become old one night is enough.” ~ Ignazio Silone

Twilight, the most expressive phase of the day, is gradually embracing this remote hamlet. The crimson skies are even more telling, a riot of colors bidding adieu to another uneventful day. Those who had to expend their physical labor are tired and weary, rushing home with day’s wages or what is left of it, after purchasing daily groceries to greet the wife and child who are eagerly awaiting the return of the lone breadwinner of the household.

Life in this remote corner is hard and unforgiving. Its cruel aspects are manifest in the meager meal they consume in the thatch-roofed home. The skies are not pregnant with even a thread rain cloud; a sliver of hope for deep and comfortable slumber is distant; the roof is old and giving way with leaky spaces in between the cadjan that’s holding itself literally almost at the end of its tether. Rustic life is held together as a family with a lot of unexpressed love but very little material essentials.

Governments come and governments go, and lives of hundreds of thousands of men and women meander on without any episodes worthy of mention. Dry and irrevocably consistent, at least in their daily situations, the husband wakes up in the wee hours of the day and comes back home with the setting sun each day without a break. The only beautiful facet of their lives is the surrounding environment; mountains on the one side and an immense valley whose land is owned by the village ‘mudalaaly’. He holds all mortgages of most of the denizens of this hamlet. The picturesque valley is maintained beyond  belief by the enormous wealth of Sirisena, the ‘mudalaaly’. His palatial house is built on a hillock overlooking the valley. With an exclusive view of the magnificent contours of this otherwise dull and drab residential settlement, Sirisena has had known no want, deficiency or inadequacy. Contradictions in rural life are many and can be utterly wicked and cruel and savage.

Twilight is nearing dusk in which the setting sun is whispering to a rising moon, painting a delightful mosaic on a vast blue sheet of skies above. What follows shall lure many a romantic damsel hurriedly trudging towards the lotus pool of water located a few hundreds away from her home. Her lover, an ordinary farming young man is awaiting her arrival, yet for another exchange of designs of their marriage and the mutual future they are intent on sharing as man and woman. Their issues are mainly centered on the family’s economic condition; anything else would take a back seat. A very ordinary way to lay eyes on life and plan their schematic time ahead.

Up north, beyond the palmyra curtain, in the Jaffna peninsula, the narrative runs in the same tune in a less melodious tone and in a more guttural voice. Abundance is present only in relation to the scorching heat and excruciatingly hard means of life and livelihoods. Echos of racial equality and justice for all are seemingly meaningless, cavernous platitudes. Politicians are well versed in that trade. MA Sumanthiran, their main voice in the hard and unrelenting concrete-Colombo, has no seat in Parliament. Shanikiyan Rasamanickam’s narratives have become a cacophonic voice in the proverbial wilderness. They have lost all context of the present. They have not yet come to terms with the reality of Anura Kumara Dissanayake‘s Presidency and an NPP-led government. An electoral loss in Jaffna has had its lingering and agonizing effects of pain and fear.

Nevertheless, the last six months, beginning from September Presidential Elections and November Parliamentary elections, the National People’s Power (NPP) has been warming the seats in the House of Parliament. Have they ushered in a new era? The straight answer is NO. AKD and his leadership committee may not like to hear it. But that s the bitter truth. Presidential System of government is still governing the country and it seems to go nowhere except inside the Presidential Secretariat and deep in the core of governance.

One can understand that, given the grave economic condition the country fell into in 2022, such constitutional reforms can wait for a another day. Granted. Yet, what’s irking the electorate is not just the failure on the delivery of the promise; total silence of any mention about the intention of the government in respect of a constitutional transformation is making them rightfully furious. It is utterly naive to expect, as time goes by, the NPP politicians to be totally disciplined and would abstain from any corrupt or dishonest deals that fall at their doorstep. Falling victim to alluring greed or avaricious transaction would be natural and not beyond these mundane minds. But such failure cannot be condoned in the context of the repeated slogans and election pledges made on their election platforms.

If the Aragalaya-22 has any consequential meaning and if its effects are to be honored and respected, leave alone it being the main galvanizing beginning of the transformation of the JVP to a more amenable and market-friendly NPP as a political entity, both AKD at the helm and the NPP as a collective government need to be responsible for the deliverables promised in the campaign. It’s not yet time to panic, but a little concern is not out of place. Power being corrupt and excessive power more corrupting, Executive Presidency has only lured the holder of that power to more power. The all-consuming egocentric sense of sheer control over whatever he or she presides over can ultimately kill all the ‘good’ things that he has promised and they could evaporate in a nanosecond. That is the human condition; that is what could kill all lofty intentions and pave the way for unthinking, unkind and inconsiderate means of governance. Let that not happen to AKD.

The crimson skies might transfer that color to what may begin to flow on parched and tired earth. ’87 to ’89 era might make a revisit with power transferred from those who were killed in that period to the ones who opt to be at the source of killing and torture. Pol Pot in Campuchia and later in the twenty first century’s Duterte of the Philippines have kept all of us busy in comparative governing systems. A leader enwrapped in self-righteousness could be a dangerous and killer-carrier of the infectious malady of ‘power’; he will be much less desirable than a half-baked mediocre ruler. Before that happens, AKD and the NPP-led government must give an unequivocal undertaking that Executive Presidency would be done away with by such and such a date and when that day arrives they must do it.

JR Jayewardene’s basic premise for Executive Presidency was that the Westminster system of a Cabinet led by the first among equals, that was the Prime Minister, could be a great impediment to fast and accelerated development of the country’s prioritized projects and schemes. J R may have had a very valid argument. Yet when such enormous powers as those of Executive President are concentrated in one individual whose idiosyncratic ambitions and desires are bound to override those of the country’s, the consequences are irreversibly harmful to the greater interests of the citizenry. A mad man can run havoc with such presidential powers and the Rajapaksas proved it beyond any shade of doubt.

Anura Kumara Dissanayake too could be subject to the same human weaknesses. Power, raw power, is such that its holder might reach a point that what he thinks and conceptualizes becomes of utmost import and everything else becomes secondary and subordinate to what he thinks and acts on. Such machinations of human folly cannot be allowed to stand in the way of the people’s needs and rights and privileges.

We are still a practicing democracy and its values and measurable yardsticks cannot be allowed to be taken away, either by AKD or any other leader. From all what is present and manifestly visible, AKD and the NPP government are totally committed to the principles of democracy. That trust has not been broken, as yet. But crises do not come with prior announcements. They arrive unannounced and without lending any time for planning or strategizing. When they do visit a developing nation as ours, our governance structures must be able to withstand all odds and yet continue as a cohesive nation and on firmer ground, not for the leaders but for the people who are at the bottom of the pyramid of the structure. The architecture of our system has held together without breaking down totally. No military takeovers or coup d’état  has succeeded. Even after the Aragalaya-22‘s success, the country went back to the democratic way of governance and a democratic way of life. What must be uppermost in our leaders’ minds must be the endurance of that way of life and that way of governance.

Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. This philosophical saying has been proved too true to life. You are living in a Utopian world. Expecting HEP AKD to do away with the Achille’s Heel , the Executive Presidency is definitely a fantasy. He appointed a Minister of Justice and a Chief Justice. Unfortunately, they cannot see the difference between the front end and the ass end of the law.

“the roof is old and giving way with leaky spaces in between the cadjan that’s holding itself literally almost at the end of its tether”
Vishwamitra is known for going to town with his imagery. I do believe that there is any significant number of cadjan roofs in the country, perhaps similar to the number of buggy carts used for transport.
Let alone the cost of maintaining a cadjan roof, even fibreglass sheets are cheaper and last longer.

Since you promoted current leaders without researching their backgrounds, Vishwa, you ought to have known this long ago. These days, they amuse both the local and international communities (see, for example, Sunil Handunetti’s recent gaffe with the World Economic Forum).

Even minor problems, let alone the elimination of the executive presidency, would be too much for today’s leaders to handle. Furthermore, they are more akin to making exaggerated claims without doing any research. They are also unaware of shamelessness, which may have something to do with their upbringing. They have no prior experience doing anything other than “blaming the others”:

          L M ,

” They are also unaware of shamelessness which may have
something to do with their upbringing . ” Today , it is true
with every single citizen of the country as far as money is
concerned . The leaders we were misled to respect are standing
          naked , still no shame . Take Mara , C B K and Sira . The whole
country knows they are a pain in the bum , but no sense of shame .
They don’t care how anyone might judge them as long as they have
what they want . Respectable leaders ? They still believe people
will react to actions against them . But the opposite is the truth .

“No military takeovers or coup d’état has succeeded.”

No need to when you have the seasoned permanent state which is run by functionaries whose only aim has been to keep the state intact as its indented form or format whether it is fit for purpose is/was another matter.

You were an ardent fan of the JNPP with much faith in their incorruptible abilities & I don’t blame you for that,. I was more sceptic about their abilities when they could not come up with the answer to their Strategy to economic recovery. Now you seem to have lost faith in the NPP & It takes guts to eat humble pie, so I raise my hat to you.
In the absence of a credible alternative with RW as a possible alternative but highly underrated due to his own faults, I too would have voted for NPP purely on the promise of cracking the whip on corruption & above all, abolishing the executive Presidanscy

    Don’t,
Unfortunately, all those promises seem to be wishful thinking. Only a few minions have been put behind bars while the sharks are still enjoying the high life at the expense of the poor tax payer. Nothing has changed at my local municipality with the peon openly demanding Rs 1000 for getting the file to the correct desk. I knew it was an impossible dream to end corruption but it’s time AKD keeps his promise of at least abolishing the Executive Presidency even if the constitution has to be changed. He should have realised that before he made the promise. As I anticipated, the NPP is not much different from the other parties, albeit, less corrupt but going back on their promises is nothing but hoodwinking the voters.

Raj-UK, whatever said, not being corrupt is one of the best qualities in this executive presidency. So give him a little more time to see how much he can do without being bullied by the obstructive elements of the former robber mulanas, fearing jail.

DTG, the “little more time” in shortest: “is two terms”. Those who lost their income are itching to bring back the Old Rowdy Royals. Talking about Evil Emperor is only an old joke. Old Rowdy Royals seems to be fearing the noose narrowing its distance from them. Those who have not seen any problem for the past 75 years are unbelievably disappointed when the country went bankrupt. Their family, with 2,000 rascals, were getting every possible fringe from the poor people’s toil. I read in the local newspaper that every day one or two political murders are committed, but it left the blame on drug dealers. They used Shevanti to kill Vasanta. But she hasn’t come out yet. But in the short time, they have killed Vasanta’s partner, without an office manager for them. So, who was penning down the Dubai orders over the phone for the hitmen? It is unbelievable that Langkang has so many hitmen freely available to murder anybody, when a fellow addict puts some notes on a piece of paper and hands it over. Do you think this Vasanta, like dealers are beggars in the bus stand, beg from you, you walk around there.

      • 2
        5

These dying drug lords, in the past, cannot be questioned by police or sentenced by a judge, or even finished off by ordinary criminals penetrating their protection shields. Now they can be shot by sacrificial suicide men, like shooting the stray dogs. Just six months ago, neither these drug lords nor their shooters were identifiable by Tennakoon or Tiran Allies, when they arrested 90,000 innocent people. Without any doubt, these murders are being committed by somebody who has more power than AKD’s government. There should be a big crocodile behind all these murders. It is so obvious either ADK showing respect for Royal Rowdy or that guy is completely out of control for AKD. When AKD took power, every aspect of human needs was the priority No.1. Country was bankrupt. For Any help, IMF insisted on belt tightening. I do not think mass should show sympathy for them only, but they should show to the NPP government so that they short this out or show their face. One good thing about these shooting is, if these drug lords are arrested by NPP government, they cannot be punished in any, but now, they are being sentenced to capital punishment by their old masters.

            “Are your suppliers OK?”
Well, well, well…., interesting question though! Tell me about that man, please! Though after NPP started the investigations I have yet to get any parcels from you, still I thought you were well and fine, physically. But the mental condition, ……because it was burned out by the overdoses of Deva Pharmacy medicines, it will not come back to normal. Anyway, how are you? What pricks you jump into this treble, horrible struggle? Gas (H2S) valve is clogged? These days you are pretending too much that you are an opponent of Old Rowdies, Chandrika, Siri Ma O’s ………………. That is a third-grade traitor deed, though you are well-used for that by doing that for Tamils for half a century. After all, for all the good hope they had on you and put you in the Rapist Air Force, or UOJ………. You think because the NPP made a stunning policy change and swept the whole country in three consecutive elections, people have no way but to believe your tricks and dramas.

              They seem OK then!

            2

Anyway, let us wait some more time and see if the AKD government can spend some time with the past history of the UOJ Paramilitaries who declared Dr. Thiyagalingam is a Diaspora caste and thus not suitable to be employed in that university, to be used in the country’s higher education system. Probably, after the departure of Bathiudeen that could be the worst incident in Langkang, except Royal Rowdies got double DSc. This is a serious crime. For the time being, if the government considers it being too small it can open, but we will keep reminding. I understand Iniyaparathy, a famous paramilitary from the East, volunteered to eat free rice. My question for you is, why are you resisting a nice deal like that but like to belly on in the Kottle, anyway? For your info, Old Rowdies built a classy one, with air conditioners, in case they happen to have to go there. Ask them if they can share a room with you.
The curse of Langkang is you are all taught in a university; that is why Langkang is in this condition.
            Jayawewa.

            Hello SJ,
Wales, Scotland and Ireland probably have a large amount of people that agree with the proposition that “Britain is not very Great”. The majority think that it was not a good idea to leave Europe (Brexit).
Unfortunately there is still a fair amount of Jingoism in England. Maybe the new Party started by Jeremy Corbyn and Zarah Sultana will defeat/deflate the balloon called Keir Starmer.

Jeremy and Zarah have to spend time reading, learning, memorising, … Mao’s red book.

Jeremy’s Social Democratic policies won’t deliver (whatever), he has to ditch those policies and …. .. Jeremy needs to emulate Kim Jong Un, … so that no country would dare attack North Korea.

II am sure you being familiar with British politics, Corbyn is too radical for the British voter. He is against the monarchy & wants ‘Britannia rules the waves’ & the ‘god save the king’ taken off the national anthem as it is outdated. I admire Corbyn for standing by his principals but the colonial mind set of the old guard & the Jewish lobby will be against him all the way. The more realistic outcome would be Farage & his Reform party & like the JVP/NPP coalition, the Tories will welcome Farage & Co to their fold to prevent their own members deflecting.

                Hello Raj-UK,
I have been against the Monarchy since about the age of 13. My Parents were Monarchists (the passive kind). My father was first a Tory Supporter and then a Scottish Nationalist, my Mother didn’t care much about Politics, but voted Labour.
Corbyn is no more Radical than Tony Benn was. Farage is a semi Fascist and couldn’t even spell “Democracy” let alone practice it.
I have seen the Machinations of the Jewish Lobby from inside Government and even in the Judiciary. As I said before, in 1967 (at School), I and a few others were the only ones that didn’t support Israel’s Wars of Aggression against the Palestinians. Always remember the vast majority of the Internet Generation is against the British Support for Israel, and hates Keir Starmer.

Don’t have any such stupid expectations that if Britain put its war criminals in prison, Rapist Royal Rowdies’ paramilitaries will be put in an air swing and Bathiudeen’s’ some 72 virgins are going to rock the swing. A tip, taking additional medication from your pharmacy trade may result in increased relaxation.

Good morning to you Raj, I couldn’t sleep last night, thinking about late SM and how naively he promoted NPP. And the others who stood with him. I knew him in person and had a lot of respect for him at first, but his politics toward JVP leaders ruined everything. He admired some CT commenters, but they don’t say anything about him anymore, for whatever reason. I’m sorry for him and wish him rest in peace.

“As I anticipated, the NPP is not much different from the other parties, albeit, less corrupt but going back on their promises is nothing but hoodwinking the voters.”

Corrupt practices extend beyond financial transactions to include the services and interactions that some people have with others.

The way they use “secret voting” to seize power in the Colombo Municipal Council, as well as the way NPP media spokesperson and Health Minister Nalin J physically appear at each LG poll administration and allow things to be handled behind the scenes, both seem to me to fall under the category of corrupt behaviour. That shouldn’t necessarily have anything to do with money. Additionally, they are deeply corrupted by empowering their friends behind the scenes simply because they provided funding for election campaigns, etc.

        LM
Like many in SL, AKD & NPP were considered a breath of fresh air after years of blatant corruption & mismanagement. SM too, was taken up by the rhetoric & obviously believed in a new era of prosperity & equality under a socialist regime. If he was living, it would have been a big disappointment for him, so may he rest in peace.
Very few saw through the JVP strategy of piggybacking on the NPP which came to prominence after the aragalaya. Even after being f****d by the much hyped GR, & before that by MR, the average SL voter doesn’t seem to learn & question how all that wonderful promises are fulfilled.
I lost faith in RW years ago because of his laissez faire approach & cronyism but in this context, he is underrated unfairly & would have been a better alternative, provided he has.the support of capable people like Harsha. After all, the NPP are following his strategy which they opposed initially.

LM: I know you cannot sleep while what you said about S-M comes to your mind. Both of you were “Buddies,” even sending “chocolates” through couriers. Later on, when “S_M” was supporting NPP, you turned an “Enemy” and criticized him and ripped off his character.

When “S-M” was not commenting on this page, I contacted him to inquire whether he was not well. What he told me about your criticism on this page through your comments is unmentionable. That is why I made a general comment on this page about the personal attacks made by commentators. Sorry to say, after two months of my meeting him, he passed away.
You are doing that to me. You called me “Mahaththaya”, “Appo”, and all other high “Honors” when supporting your views. But my support for NPP turned me into a “Bastard” to you. I wan’t fall like “S_M”.

In a conversation with a long-standing friend who is a high up JVP leader, I expressed some concerns on the government’s commitment to war crimes prosecution and devolution.

Without answering me directly, he told me “Read our manifesto. We will strictly go by it.”

He must keep his word. The JVP must stand by its manifesto.

Devolution and the abolition of the presidency must be done. After Chemmany, war crimes must be vigorously prosecuted. The soldiers, however high-up in command, must be locked up by an accelerated process. Many countries stand prepared to help with the dossiers of evidence in their hands.

Those bearing particular investigation are General G. H. De Silva who was the Commander of the Sri Lankan Army from January 1, 1994, to April 30, 1996.
Brigadier Janaka Perera was in command of Chemmani at the time of the mass murders and burials, handling security in assigned areas under Brigadier Sri Lal Weerasuriya.

Dear Jaffna Man: You referred to the Chemmani mass grave. All the accused were from the Army, and all of them were found guilty and given the death penalty. An appeal was made to the SC. The Five Judge bench presided by the then Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake unanimously confirmed the death penalty imposed on all the accused. Please listen to the following link to get the history of this case. It is in Sinhala. Hope you could comprehend it.

That was an unusual time in the history of Sri Lanka when we had Chandrika BK running Sri Lanka and Shirani B as a Supreme Court Justice. Those were relatively good times. There was room for prosecuting criminal elements in the Sinhalese enterprise. However, only the sprats – small fry – were prosecuted. It was a felicitous but weak beginning following Chandrika’s election but was snuffed out by the Rajapaksas.
We should not lose sight of the fact that those in command responsibility were left alone – especially Brigadier Janaka Perera who was in command of Chemmani at the time of the mass murders and burials, under Brigadier Sri Lal Weerasuriya who with a chestful of medals for heroic killings was promptly upon retirement in 2000 made an ambassador/high commissioner by Chandrika. I understand in retirement he is a regular Christian preacher!

Perera too, perhaps as a reward, was made ambassador but by Rajapaksa! He was killed by a suicide bomber. The Wikipedia page on him has an interesting sentence on his and his wife’s killing by a suicide bomber:
“The LTTE have been blamed for the bombing by Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajpaksa.” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janaka_Perera).
        What does it really say?

        • 1
          0

          Continuing with the above comment
What does the above wiki line really say on the killings of rigadier Perera and his wife? That
          1) The LTTE murdered him according to Rajapaksa or
          2) Rajapaksa bombed the General but the LTTE has been blamed for it?
I wish English could really be the link language it has to be avoiding ghastly mistakes like this.
Today, I hope the new President will restart that pursuit of justice begun with the small fry.
High or low, whether it is those who did the killing or those who were in command responsibility, criminals must be brought to justice. Too many of them are strutting around like peacocks after being installed as state high-ups.
People say the govt must not be pressed to prosecute war crimes since it will make the government lose Sinhalese support.
No. We elected AKD to be a leader, and he must be a leader. If AKD does not wait too long, the Sinhalese people can be won over to the idea. If he delays, the rabid parts of Sri Lanka will get more and more active, taking us back to square one.

“All the accused were from the Army, and all of them were found guilty and given the death penalty.”

Not all of them were brought to courts, charged nor punished.
Main accused told the courts there could have been 300 to 600 bodies buried in Chemani. The state never wanted to dig and investigate. The main man Rajapaksa was found guilty and sentenced to death. Gota found himself playing god and released him.

Presidential Commissions identified many mass graves in the 1990s, and identified the perpetrators. Chandrika’s uncle Ratwatte refused to charge them.

Recently I watched a video of the unelected President Ranil at Davos economic summit in 2024.

Ranil with his gang has been a regular visitor at this conference whenever he is in any kind of power in Sri Lanka ( mainly as PM).

Like old Esmund, he wants to see and be seen among the world powers. Does not matter he is an utter failure and his country is not even equal to the economy of the town of Davos ! There are charges of mass torture and corruption against him. He ruined the UNP.

Anyway at this particular TV show he was the only head of State, there was a very much more articulate and intelligent Minister from Nigeria and the rest were young economists.

It was obvious Ranil was out of depth there, throwing words and ideas he had picked up ( without proper understanding) just to impress. Don’t forger he fancies himself an expert on almost everything, including meaning of Baila songs !

I suppose Davos wanted to show the kind of leader a failed economy produces . So full of himself and unaware that he is the joker on this global stage.

Sri Lanka simply should not have Presidents, they only can stage comedies

In order to cover up and assist Mlechcha politicians who have committed high crimes on purpose in the past, we have hired and planted men everywhere. LESTER AKA DEEPTHI DE SILVA is one of them; he has been criticizing things other than criminal Rajapakshes. This abusive person is skilled at giving her own remarks the “green thumb,” but she is not even adept at telling the truth.

Politicians are the mirror image of society. However, the suptid people who lead and dominate Sri Lanka are far from grasping it.
Unfortunately, the majority of our people continue to fall for the same tricks. Emotions, not the little brains, are used to caricature them. Looking back, the foundational actions taken by “Kaju Seeya aka former president RW his powerful but small cabinet” are what move things forward even though the AKD and HA have done nothing for the past nine months despite making HUGE empty promises on a larger scale.

Even teenagers are starting to realize that AKD and similar inexperienced politicians who have spent their entire lives hating others for their own fate can only continue to do so if they gain wealth and become middle class.

The Rajapakshes ruined the country by exploiting the same people’s trust. Because of hatreds and angers, those who had previously supported them switched sides and voted for a man and his murderous and fascist movement. It’s like a mother being admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) to save her life, only to have her primary doctor replaced by an inexperienced assistant doctor. Today, everything is based on hyperbolic allegations levelled against others, but the incumbent president and his administration must employ the same tactics as previous leaders in order to survive in today’s political climate.

“We all know how you worship this bogus economist ranil”

Perhaps you and your coworkers in the sex industry haven’t noticed it yet, but he did a great job, according to those who opposed RW and his major accomplishments with the IMF by September 21, 2024, for the purpose of reviving the flagging economy.

However, those like you who are preoccupied with the oldest to criticize him today as “Bogus Ranil” should be linked to personal grudges. Do you not think that your tone and wording should be changed? I have witnessed good colleagues of yours on the Hamburger Raperbahn politely addressing their customers.

The self-proclaimed political scientist, also known as MaRa’s lap dog, Dayan Jayathilaka, is unable to share anything today and are instead standing in front of the TV screen. Dear NV,
I’ve found the following video for you and others as weary Deepthi brought up the subject of Davos and Ranil.

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DPsBZiStfk&t=21s

Let’s compare what Sunil Handunetti recently said at the World Economic Forum session in China.

Deepthi’s recent business trip to NICE in the south of France should undoubtedly be linked to her fatigue.
S/he was crying because she had no wealthy customers to support her, so I introduced her to a few US customers. However, for the benefit of our sinking country, which is currently ruled by wild boars in human disguise, let’s concentrate more on Davos.

    Deepthi,
Ranil wears suit and tie and looks like our former colonisers, no. So he melds in well in Devos or wherever the whitefellow gather. When they see him they know he will support their “investment plans” to exploit our sarong fellows and keep them permanently in sarongs or lankoloth.

    • 7
      3

Has the incumbent leadership given the position to a qualified man, or is it due to the widespread lack of knowledge about leadership today?

Who advised Handunetti to go and represent Sri Lanka around the world? Is this how the newly formed Dawn government handles external affairs?

No other ministers or leaders have ever represented a commonwealth nation like Sunil Handunetti. Perhaps this is the shift that 6.8 million punnaku drinkers were hoping for.

If people stop attacking each other on a personal level and instead try to respect the principles, the day will come when our rational thinking nature will open up to progress.

Paranoid theories would not move us forward. Even Amude’s attire would suffice if the leaders could perform their duties properly.

So, your Communism came from La La Country’s lions’ dens or Black African jungles? Did Evil Emperor’s rhetoric meld in Al Jazeera’s Hard Talk or German Public Chanel? Why did Evil send the American Ambassador out of his office when the ambassador wanted to talk about the Israeli embassy office movement? How come Old Rowdy had the SLMM closed, but Evil could not stop even one resolution that was being passed in UNHRC? Why did Evil not want to take loans from the IMF in 2015, but robbed the central Bank? Tell me, other than the one, the Volkswagen plant, how many White men investment projects Evil brought to the country? Saying these guys are wearing sarong is excessive talk. They don’t even get Amude to wear them after they start to dismantle the Estate Industry, where the Tamils were working hard and earning some money for the country.

“What Happened To The Abolition Of Executive Presidency?”
The answer is we don’t know yet. Will it happen during this term from September 2024 to August 2029? We don’t have an answer? NPP government not only promised to do abolition of executive presidency but many other promises. So far nothing started but continuing the same constitution, same laws, same infrastructures etc. There is a peace in the country since 2022 until September 2024 under former Selected President RW but We had a Presidential election in September 2024 under RW. The outcome is AKD/NPP Government and the peace continues and the government continue with the same system without any obstructions from in and out.
NPP told us that they think about a new constitution only after three years but never fixed a date for the constitution. It means after restarting to pay the debt which is over 100 or 125 Billion US dollars. So, the new constitution may not happen before the election year 2029. In other words, the most possibility is that as usual promises may not possible.

Is that from the yellow Thavani monks, Kandy Ayatollahs’ laps? From whose bank ADK will be writing the checks? From Old Daddy, Uncle JR’s book? Did you hear that there is talk on the street that America is planning to increase the import tax to 44%? Who is going to shoulder that? Our Mama Evil Emperor? What about if the Rowdy Royals open up their treasury, where more than $30B(media’s assessment) is sitting and accruing moss and fungus.

        HT,
Simply put, Deepthi’s comments are finely intended to divert attention away from Rajapkash’s HIGH crimes.
I do not want to imprison them indefinitely, but the crimes they committed should be investigated/expsosed, and their assets should be turned over to the government.
Mervin Silva was recently imprisoned, and no one questioned why. However, given the good things these vicious men have done for this country during their terms, not to mention their age and fragility, punishments should not be harsh. This is a “predominantly Buddhist nation” country. Taking wealth obtained illegally can improve treasury assets, despite the fact that these ministers’ mismanagement bankrupted the country.

      Hello Deepthi,
Welcome back. Even in Germany there are some dishes best eaten with your fingers. It’s a pity they don’t serve the following in Sri Lanka; maybe somewhere in Negombo (Migamuwa)?
      Best regards

        0

        My dear LS,
You have lived in Germany and on nearly every continent, so you are knowledgeable.

You’re absolutely right about eating fingers. In the UK, people use their fingers to eat KFC or other foods, just like in Germany. I have witnessed it during my business travels throughout Europe. The majority of people I interact with are professionals in the fields of medicine and science (such as professors, post-docs, physicians, nurses, and so forth); they don’t give a damn about your diet today. The days when people were preoccupied with table manners, as royals are taught, were long gone.
Kindly correct me if I’m mistaken. Since most of your opinions are accurate, I always respect them. Nothing like boasting or showing off. However, we have been attacked for using SRILANKEN-typical eating habits and dishes by those who claim to be from London but act as though they are actually living and dreaming in Wilpaththu.

How are you feeling? Deepthi, the person in question, doesn’t seem to understand the fundamentals of anything. She or he only discusses defending Rajapkashes for some secret motives. As our HT clarified, Deepthi was discussing taking a vacation already a few weeks prior. Once more, he is informing us about any planned vacation. At the same time, they are constantly occupied with green thumbs to make comments.

        LS,
Friditch Merz, the current CHANZELLER in Germany, is originally from Sauerland, which is located near the Ruhrgebiet in Rheinland-Westfalia. I also have a lot of friends there. I enjoy eating curry wurst with frites. I don’t think our HE AKD had the opportunity to try them during his brief visit.
However, none of us knew what he was doing on June 12th, because they simply kept it hidden from the public for various reasons. They came to be exemplary with their transparency and accountability, but when practising their rule, they are even worse than North Korea’s president Kim Jong-un. As of today:

“Best of luck with your curry and the licking of fingers afterwards !”
Anyway, I have to add my thoughts here even though responding to you is repulsive. We don’t yet know if you are a man, woman, or transgender person, but it seems like your word choices are polluting the entire environment. This might be the case for a large number of people in the lucrative global sex industry. Easy money, but the mental and physical suffering you endure is beyond imagination.

Btw, I only lived in my native country for the first twenty years, but I loved Lanken cuisine, and I still don’t have any problems with it.

In my capacity as a hobby cook, I have prepared meals for my European colleagues whenever they visit us in central Germany or central London. Some of them (former Members of Parliament for the European Union and green party advacates) prefer Indian and Sri Lankan food to all other Mediterranean cuisine.

Although the terms “sodhi” (gravy) and “sodanawa” (laundry) may offend you, we original South Asians are well acquainted with them.

You may have had similar experiences as a teenager with your elders, i.e., parents and other relatives. We argued endlessly as teenagers, regardless of the topic. However, our elders were patient and wise too. They asked us to do things, but most practices would not be completely effective, as the theory suggests. We as teenagers were unable to grasp it because we desired to complete everything in a short period of time, but its feasibility is dependent on a variety of factors. Similarly, JEPPOs have always assumed that once they are in power, everything will be EASY as pie. However, their abilities are not all that they appear to be.

In reading the comments, it is regrettable to note the decline in civility of comments (the language used) directed at a personal level at each other, rather than contributing an opinion on the subject matter of the main article. Sometimes, I wonder whether the comments that follow are worthy of reading, because the language used in many of those is so vituperative and degrading.

I was speaking to some of my associates, and they expressed dismay at how some comments originate from the so-called members of civilized society. Most of them have completely abandoned reading the comments column, but the main articles. That could be the reason why I don’t see newcomers in the comments column.

Anyway, I could be the lonely dog baking. Let the caravan move.

D, (Mahathmaya – as I was used to call you at the begining).
      Today, everyone is perplexed.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFPbiCXpK4I

Some may have believed that they would be able to live up to their rhetoric, but they haven’t demonstrated their unity as a group to serve as an example for us and others. Mahinda Jayasinghe claims that we lack oil storage facilities, but the media spokesperson is arrogantly criticizing his own coworkers. At the same time, the nation’s president asserts that there are sufficient storage facilities throughout the nation. It’s very doubtful who is telling the truth. Why are people being misled, I wonder?
You claim that the caravan is moving forward and that dogs are barking. Are you certain it’s moving or if a snail is catching it?

        Hello Leelagemalli,
Having ridden Camels in the Desert, even during the night, I know how difficult it is to navigate. The abilities of the Arabs to navigate in what appears to us to be a featureless succession of sand dunes, is nothing short of miraculous to me.
I was called out one night to investigate some problems with a Surveillance Vehicle on the West Coast of Qatar. I was met by one of the Operators on the main road and then taken in his Vehicle across 25 km of Desert Track to the Coast. After fixing the problems I was driven back in Pitch Darkness at around 100 kph in a Military Land Cruiser, while the Driver smoked his cigarettes and talked to his Girlfriend on his Phone. I had driven the same tracks in Daylight many times and usually got lost and had to backtrack.even with GPS. Obviously I survived the Trauma of that night time journey.
The Moral of the story is the Caravan needs a good Navigator, not just the ability to move onward.
        Best regards

LS, As always, it’s nice to read from you.
          .
I would not board a plane where I knew the pilot lacked the bare minimum of qualifications, but NPP supporters did so on an AKD-driven plane.
Today, most of them are speechless; however, lies upon lies keep them safe. But for how long?
I wish Douglas’ dreams would come true sooner rather than later, but I would not even consider proceeding with the lanken situation because I am fully aware of the current group’s abilities. Not a single good thing has been done so far. They may claim that they have been preoccupied with HORU ALLIMA, also known as crime investigations, which are carried out by legal authorities rather than the government. If the government does it, they are interfering with the process.
Furthermore, what use does it serve to discuss the “independent judiciary” any more if they assert that their government expedites the process of apprehending thieves and criminals? Additionally, there are a few instances where the ruling politicians engage in illegal activities, but their biased media today does not even report on them. Their performance today is completely inconsistent.

          LS,

It’s a free world …… each to his own ……

But you are well and truly slowly acquiring/drifting-into Lankan traits!

What’d ……. I tell you …… there isn’t a single Lankan male adult who can change his mind. ……… Do you truly believe a Lankan adult who didn’t like AKD/government in the first place can change his mind now? Do how opinions are made have any correlation to the reality out there? It’s a blooming peculiar Lankan mental disease. :))))

If you want to be a real/true Lankan wade right into it wholeheartedly …… if you want to keep/retain your Scottish sensibilities stay out of it. The choice is yours. :)))

          “Hovering near treacherous water
A friend saw him drifting and caught him” :)))))))

One thing I noticed …… before they drive into the desert they reduce the pressure of the tyres ……. then when they come out …… there are guys at the roadside who pump them back up for a bit of money …… to get back on the road and drive.

The remarkable thing is ……. there are all sorts of fancy vehicles on the roads ……. but exclusively use Toyota Land Cruisers to go into the desert ……. this is true of Bolivian Salt Lakes too; nothing but Land Cruisers. What a testament!

            Hello Nimal,
I drove a Nissan XTerra for most of the time in Qatar. It was nearly as good as the Land Cruiser (which I also drove in the Desert) but I couldn’t climb the steep dunes that the Land Cruisers did easily. We were on our way to one of our sites near the Inland Sea when a Saloon Car (Honda) passed us driven by a Filippino. A couple of miles down the Track we had to pull him out of the first big dune that he tried to cross.
In this Link you can see one of our Radar Towers at 6.00 minutes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=feQEYjXSSAk
My first car for the desert was a Suzuki Grand Vitara great as long as you kept your speed up, if not you were sunk!
As for the Sri Lankan Treacherous Waters, I have swum in the huge waves at Negombo (much to my Wife’s distress). It’s nothing compared to the North Sea, but yes you are right, many Sri Lankans find it difficult to change their minds. There are others that have given the same warning on CT😎.
            Best regards

              “time in Qatar”

              LS,

When Trump was the president the first time …… he and his SIL initiated a boycott of Qatar with some other Arab states ……… do you know what that was all about?

This time around they “donated” him a luxury jet …….. lesson learnt, eh? …….. :)))

Douglas, I agree that these same people want to appear big by condemning the rest of civilised society. Very foolish end eternally and very sad too.

        Dear Readers,
Where has the expected change occurred? Nine months went by. Where is it?

Three to four months ago, more than 320 harbour containers, both with and without “red-labeled” ones, were relleasted.

If a dangerous incident like this happened in the nation where I live, the chanceller or the responsible minister would immediately step down on his own. We would have declared “a real change is dawned” if that had been carried out by the current government. At the very least, they ought to present convincing arguments for why their government made the grave error that they are purposefully concealing.
Acting as if nothing has occurred or that the victims of Easter Sundy are enduring “torments of tantulus” in relation to proper justice, the president is now speaking to “the other MARA (Rev. Malcom Ranjaith)”.

And in order to show the public that they are not scared to take action against the criminals, regardless of their status, such an incident should be investigated as soon as possible.
Why are they taking a snail walk today?
In the first few months, any government should put in its best effort, but the current administration is just making the ineffective “catching thieves” process worse. Today’s youth and people are hopeless.

      Hello Douglas,
Our “Dominie”, Sinhala Man is no longer here to keep us in line and guide us in the correct usage of English. The “Old Guard” is slowly declining.
Lester was a useful diversion from the real problems facing Sri Lanka. His expression of the Dunning Kruger Syndrome (which we all probably have in small measures) resulted in record breaking numbers and lengths of Replies. He would have had a field day regarding Mass Graves. I am sure his ability to morph into other “Characters” will ensure his return.
The two main Camps of Majoritarian Sinhalese and Tamil Separatists have fragmented and some have sunk to the depths of “ad hominem” attacks. The frustrations of Sri Lankans (after the Election of the NPP) at the slow rate of Political Change is reflected in these Columns.
There is also a World Wide attack by powerful Political Groups on those defending Human Rights. The UN and many NGOs are constantly undermined by Countries with an Agenda against Democracy. There is an undercurrent of Dissent in Social Media that is attacked (or ignored) by the Mainstream Media (e.g. BBC Gaza Coverage). The Barbarians have stolen the Gates.
      Best regards

Hi LS: Thanks for your response. That “slow rate of political change” is understandable considering the huge mess in all spheres of politics, economics, and the social setup. You have heard – Slow and steady wins the race.

Look at what has happened to Donald Trump, who tries to do things in a hurry.

Can we really draw that comparison? “Look at what has happened to Donald Trump, who tries to do things in a hurry.”

If the former president’s actions during those 26 months had not been taken, we would be a starving nation today.

But what has changed since the current men were elected?

Did they act as they spoke?

They misled the nation like never before with their exaggerated statements.
However, they have been unable to make some concessions to the people in a situation where the global oil market is more affordable. However, they made a big deal out of saying that they would do it every six months while they were in power.

The economies of Burkina Faso and Rwanda are flourishing at the moment. They are regarded as shining lights on the African continent, especially in light of the economic actions being taken by Ethiopia and a number of other nations that are previously unknown.
Their leaders were created from the ground up. Even though Thambuththegama-born AKD appears to be experiencing speechlessness at a time when the country is being rebuilt, why can’t ours become like theirs?
What are the obstacles that stand in his way? Although Paul Kageme (Rwanda) and Abraham Trarore (Burkino Faso) did not seize power by telling outright lies, their social structures are not entirely compatible with our island nation’s trajectory of democratic governance over the past 70 years.
Many would argue that we shouldn’t compare it to African nations, but even when people’s mandates are given for genuine change, Sri Lanka’s politics are enmeshed in scandals. Perhaps, as former President Sirisena stated, the true dangers that prevent anything from succeeding in this nation are strained cultural ties and social stigmas. Now that Jeppos (representing as NPP) are in a position of leadership, they are subjected to a lot of torture when it comes to performing their duties bravely.

Is spite of Mr Clean Ol’ Ranil’s best efforts …. why the Executive Presidency …… got a bad rap/name. Although it was called a bank robbery ……. I always suspected it was the EPF that was scammed and lost the money. ….. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEaOY2t_ArU

Why isn’t hardworking Native ……. more proactive about protecting his hard-earned money in the EPF?

Perhaps he knows something …… others don’t! :)))

Ah! What would Lanka be if there were no Lankans?

Difficult question ….. for such a simple man ……….

Even though after 77 years of Sinhala Governments in this land, we only talk about economy without talking about what contributed to economic collapse of this land. One fact truth is all people, politicians, political leaders , political policies, religious leaders, religions etc. One important truth is none of us want to say the truth or accept the truth and make changes.
