When Cowards Try To Be Heroes …

By Ameer Ali

Dr. Ameer Ali

Over the recent weeks two issues relating to Muslims had resurfaced to catch attention from the local media, one concerning that controversial cremation of Covid-dead Muslims during the Presidency of Gotabaya Rajapaksa (GR), and the other about Rohingya Muslim refugees who started arriving in Sri Lanka since 2008 when Mahinda Rajapaksa (MR) was President. A good number of those refugees is reported to have found permanent abode in this Buddhist country, which is historically renowned for its hospitality and magnanimity particularly towards Muslims. But what is puzzling is the timing and motive of those who are trying to champion these causes in their effort to emerge as heroes perhaps to cover up their previous cowardice over the same issues.

To begin with, there is absolutely no reason to absolve GR and his team of fake scientists for their sacrilegious act of cremating Covid-dead Muslims. Nowhere in the world except in Sri Lanka this religious crime was committed. GR clearly acted on the pseudo-scientific advice provided not by virologists or medical experts but by a soil scientist who believed that Covid dead bodies if buried could spread the virus through underground water. No medical opinion anywhere in the world corroborated her view.

Be that as it may, when GR issued the order for cremation there were twenty-two Muslim representatives sitting on both sides of the parliament including the one personally appointed by GR as his Minister of Justice. Did any of them openly challenge the President on his contumelious executive order? What would have been the international impact for example had all twenty-two of those MPs quietly walked out of the parliament in protest and boycotted the sessions thereafter until that order was rescinded? It may be that one or two of them might have quietly whispered into GR’s ears about the growing Muslim anger. If so, he listened to it casually and then ignored the complaint. Even the Mufti and head of the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulema – the so-called apex Muslim religious body at that time, did not have the guts to condemn GR’s decision publicly, but instead was advising his community how to bury the ashes according to the so called shariah. All these leaders shamefully and cowardly waited until the Catholic Cardinal to his credit raised his voice and appealed GR to allow Muslims to perform their religious obligation towards the dead.

The same cowardliness was exhibited over the issue of Rohingyas. None of the Muslim politicians had the courage to stand up against Mahinda Rajapaksa’s decision to spread the red carpet to welcome Myanmar’s notorious Bhikkhu Asin Wirathu, the “Face of Terror” as Time captioned his appearance, who openly encouraged the killing and expulsion of Rohingya Muslims. MR’s politically motivated welcome to this man certainly won the support of the local Bodu Bala Sena Buddhist supremacist outfit, which later unleashed their own venom against local Muslims. Thus, on the issues of cremation and plight of Rohingya Muslims local Muslim politicians of that time failed to act with conviction and courage and remained muted so that not to jeopardize their own future in relations with Rajapaksas.

Now with a new president and government they are trying to become heroes of lost causes by demanding yesterday’s culprits to be brought before justice and financial compensation paid to families that fell victims to that sacrilegious horror. Why didn’t they raise these matters at least when Ranil Wickremesinghe was President and why now? The only reason is to avenge the humiliation they and their parties or coalitions suffered at the hands of NPP at the last General Election. They started their revenge with condemning the government for not appointing a Muslim to the cabinet and when that fizzled out they are rekindling the lost causes so that they can at least send a message to the Muslim community that they are the warriors dedicated to fight for and win the rights of Muslims.

That tactic is bound to fail, because the younger generation of Muslims like their counterparts in other communities are politically more enlightened than those of the old. They belong to the post-aragalaya political renaissance which has no place for identity politics. The AKD-led NPP governance was swept into power on one crucial issue i.e., cleaning up the corrupt political culture which over three quarters of a century had corroded the elements of democracy and kept this fertile, talented and skilled multi-ethnic country disunited and immiserized. Although the economic challenge is proving to be increasingly formidable due to shocking developments happening outside Sri Lanka, and therefore the expected revival and growth may take longer even with IMF assistance, the new government’s resolve to clean up political governance and eradicate corruption at all levels should create a new environment for democracy to prosper. The clean Sri Lanka project is more than just keeping the physical environment appealing and healthy. That project also includes cleaning the governance ledgers and bringing to books the key players of the old order who mismanaged everything, broke the public trust and built their private fortunes while remaining in power. If the so-called Muslim leaders in the opposition have nothing positive to contribute to this invaluable effort let them at least keep their mouths shut without making fool of themselves.

Dr. Ameer Ali: Why there is no reference to the case of Dr.Segan Shihabdeen Mohamed mentioned in your article?

This is the Doctor who was taken into custody by the CID before the 2019 Presidential election accusing him of acquiring properties illegally and sterilizing Buddhist women numbers exceeding 600 hundreds during cesarean procedures at Kurunegala hospital. Who made these allegations? (1) The “Professor?” Channa Jayasumana, (2) Rev. Rathana – MP (3) Wimal Weerawanse – MP (4) Dr. Weerabandara -the Director Doctor (Detal) of the Kurunegala Hospital. Remember the lead article that was published in the daily “Diviyina”. He was detained under the “Anti-Terrorism Act” for more than 9 months.

That was another “Election Campaign” akin to the Easter Sunday Attack.

He has been exonerated of all charges (Terrorism, Money Laundering & Criminal) and re-instated in his job with back pay.

He has filed a complaint with the Police against all who perpetrated against him one among those is the DIG of Kurunegala. As of February 12, this DIG has been transferred to Galle District. Is that enough of a punishment?

Where is justice for Dr. Segan Shihabdeen Mohamed?

“GR clearly acted on the pseudo-scientific advice provided not by virologists or medical experts but by a soil scientist who believed that Covid dead bodies if buried could spread the virus through underground water. “
I wonder if Dr. Ali, who heavily promoted the NPP on the grounds that its members were educated, highly qualified, honest, blah blah, sees the irony in this statement, at a time when the government is floundering in cock-ups ranging from rice to salt and stable electricity, despite the Professors and Doctors in positions of power. Now it seems to think that antique laws from the 70’s will help prevent shortages in future, when they didn’t in the past.
Qualifications are not everything. Common sense can help.

          Continued,
GR used this as an excuse, he just wanted to punish Muslims. I talked to the Public Health Inspector in Kandy at the time. They all knew that there was no Scientific Evidence for it, and I am sure Dr. Ameer Ali knows this well. It was Vindictiveness, not Ignorance.
          Best regards

            LS,
Gota could be excused for being vindictive and stupid. But his “highly qualified” advisors? For example, the specialist pediatrician cum geologist cum nephrologist cum organic agriculture expert and GMOA president Anurudda Padeniya?
The NPP too, like Gota and most Sri Lankans, are too hung up on qualifications.

              OC,
“Like Gota and many Sri Lankans, the National People’s Power Party is too interested in qualifications.”

Only paper qualifications, but they are still far from experience. Look at the way many of the current ministers make public statements. Handunnetti, Bimal Ratananayake, Jayatissa do not seem to study the facts before issuing their public statements. I think the Sri Lankan media is inflated because they do not study properly. This country is full of empty vessels, and those who call the media fraudsters do not seem to have the courage to reveal the truth. The same vicious cycle continues.

                LM,
Namal Karunaratna was boasting the other day that farmers are being paid the “highest prices in history ” for their paddy. Doesn’t he know that the price increases without fail every year due to inflation? What about the consumers?

Muslims as a community in Sri Lanka have not shown their solidarity with Palestinians during their ordeal of a holocaust in Gaza over fifteen months. Their protests on the streets were abysmally low compared to the non-Muslim hundreds of thousands of citizens in western countries who stood for the Palestinians. India has a similar problem with the Hindutva hordes, a much more established version of the Bodu Bala Sena. India even sent troops to Israel to kill Palestinian civilians by the thousands. Some of the major constraints that a free Palestine faces, is the betrayal, collaborators and spies within their communities as well as utterly corrupt Arab leaders taking Western bribes or submitting to blackmail. Shame on them!

“Muslims as a community in Sri Lanka have not shown their solidarity with Palestinians during their ordeal of a holocaust in Gaza over fifteen months. “
Not only Muslims but also Sinhalese as a community in Sri Lanka have not shown their solidarity with their Tamil brothers for the past 77 years. This includes JVP/NPP as well.

What ability have petty minded Tamil nationalists shown to express sympathy for any oppressed people?
        ZILCH!
They only shed crocodile tears for Tamils to keep people ethnically divided.

        Ajith ,

Communities belonging to different Religions and Cultures living
peacefully with each other had been a real Luxury . We are no more
in that luxury . Nothing to worry , we have replaced it with Misery .
Our Great Leaders are asking today ” who are you ? ” Big Mouths and
small Hearts . Light has created new darkness . Well Illuminated
Darkness . You give them the whole planet , no not enough .

          WW,
This has a lot to do with the inferiority complex they are entangled in.
Look, Champika Ranawaka publicly attacked the qualifications of the SJB leader, because Premadasa obtained her schooling and degree outside the country. The same was true with CBK and her qualifications. I happened to meet with some student activists at Sorbone University that were speaking about CBK and her student life. Our people are motivated to act like that because of jealousy and envy. They simply dont respect others. Their banner of SB affinity is on their foreheads, but they dont care little about “true buddhism”.

Today our people are more struggling with class, not caste and race.
          :
-This reminded me of my former hostel friends (Ethiopians) who never allow others to speak the truth about their country. Our people are no different. Many JVP members have not been able to compete with their SJB and UNP colleagues, and they are struggling before media conferences.
Many need more corresonsponding training and sanctuaries before they are forced to do jobs. Those educated outside the country can see it without further ado, many who believe they are experts are not real experts but are inflated by Sri Lankan media fraudsters.

The country could not afford to withstand the shocks of capitalism and
systematically slipped into the hands of the Left to run it , the same
failed capitalism . Left , whoever it is, doing the job of the Right is a Coward .
And they are taking the people for fools and the people who know nothing
about Left Right , go on being that way .

The COVID mortality rate in Sri Lanka was low, thanks to the actions taken by Gothabaya.

“Conclusion Compared with other countries, the burden of COVID-19 in Sri Lanka, as assessed by DALYs, was relatively low. This may be due to the country being an island and the strict rules imposed by the government to limit the spread of the disease.”

    https://bmjpublichealth.bmj.com/content/1/1/e000055

I don’t know why the author is obsessed with the burials of members belonging to a particular religion. COVID affected everyone, regardless of background. This is the same author who wrote three pieces about the Easter Attacks without ever referring to the attackers as “terrorists.”

“The COVID mortality rate in Sri Lanka was low, thanks to the actions taken by Gothabaya.” Absolute BS as usual from CT’s Resident Liar.
It was low compared to USA, but more than double that of India.
      .
There have been 664,345 infections and 16,526 coronavirus-related deaths reported in Sri Lanka since the pandemic began, which works out to 751 per million population.
      https://www.reuters.com/graphics/world-coronavirus-tracker-and-maps/countries-and-territories/sri-lanka/

There have been 43,710,027 infections and 525,604 coronavirus-related deaths reported in India since the pandemic began. That works out to 252 per million population.
      https://www.reuters.com/world-coronavirus-tracker-and-maps/countries-and-territories/india/
      .
The biggest difference of course is that even Modi didn’t try to cremate Muslims, and he didn’t bankrupt the country.
I don’t know why the Great Liar is obsessed with pretending that Gota was anything but a coward and a fool. But then, cowards have to stick together, don’t they? They also lose their pants a lot, even though they claim to have “attended university “.

      Hello Lester,
Where is your Evidence for Covid 19 actually being transmitted by Groundwater? Don’t be your usual self, this time provide references.
Here is the concensus view -” In his analysis of documented scientific literature and both laboratory and field studies, Sobsey reports that not only is there no documented evidence for the presence of infectious SARS-CoV-2 particles in environmental fecal wastes and waters, but there is also no epidemiological evidence that water and wastewater have ever contributed to human cases, clusters or outbreaks of COVID-19 infection, illness or death”. https://sph.unc.edu/sph-news/evidence-suggests-covid-19-is-not-transmitted-through-wastewater/
