Which Choice, Which Future For Sri Lanka?

By Dayan Jayatilleka

Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka

There are times in history when one can remain above the fray and there are other times when one has to pick a side, make a choice. There are times when one can content oneself by diagnosing the problem and there are other times when one has also to indicate a solution. If one is serious about what one says and does, the solution has to be viable.

I do not believe that any society can tackle all its major problems at once. Nor do I believe that any society can fulfil its full potential in one leap. I hold with those who say that societies move through stages. Each stage has a defining task or cluster of tasks. Not all major tasks can be fulfilled in a single stage of social evolution.

I strongly feel that Sri Lanka has many tasks and challenges which have to be tackled in different stages and that these stages can be arranged in this or that sequence, though these tasks and stages may overlap, and are not always neatly separable.

Hafeel Farisz confuses, intentionally or otherwise, what I’ve said about Gotabaya and Gunaratnam, both of who are the most interesting figures I find in the Sri Lankan public arena today, because they come from two different streams of our contemporary history and have new ideas.

At no point did I say that I wish for Gunaratnam’s ideas to triumph. What I see is that is a three dimensional vision—Sri Lanka’s present crisis and possible solutions (b) Sri Lanka’s potential as a country and (c) Sri Lanka’s distant future potential as a society. But I shall return to that in a moment.

Since Farisz seems unable to get my point, I shall simplify. He tries to impose a choice on me between Gotabaya and Gunaratnam. That is not a choice for the present. In fact I don’t see it a choice at all. I see it as a sequence of different stages of socio-historical evolution. In the sequence A, B, C, it would be stupid to insist that ‘B” and ‘C’ are choices.

The choice facing Sri Lanka today, by which I mean in the current situation, from now up to the election of 2019-202, is obviously not between Gotabaya and Gunaratnam. It is a choice between President Sirisena on the one hand and Ranil-CBK-Mangala on the other. The issues are a new constitution, the Geneva Resolutions and the massive economic sellout.

In the short term, there are two possible scenarios/outcomes. In one, the choice is between President Sirisena and a coalition which may be dominated by the SLFP, or a UNP minus the Wickremesinghe faction and CBK, but inducts the JO or has the JO as the parliamentary Opposition.

In the second, a combination of the defeat of the Government at a Referendum—scheduled, says The Economist (London) within the year and at its end– combined with a strike wave generalizing itself and a reaction to Special Courts against the military, lead to a crisis of governability and the replacement from below or above, of the Government. This is the Hartal August 1953 scenario.

With or without either scenario, I am fairly confident that the UNP government will lose the next election. That’s when the choice comes in, and it isn’t Gotabhaya vs. Gunaratnam. Nor I might add, am I advocating Gotabhaya with Gunaratnam. That latter formula was attempted once by a well-intentioned President Premadasa, who released 1300 JVP detainees, declared a unilateral ceasefire and invited the JVP to join him in cabinet. He hoped that with their support and energies he could build a socially just society. The JVP, which included Gunaratnam, spurned the offer and returned to war, which they lost. Premadasa regarded the JVP, as he did the LTTE as a potential ally; the JVP regarded Premadasa, as it does Mahinda Rajapaksa as a competitor and the LTTE regarded him as an enemy. So that fusion project did not work out well.

That’s not what I am arguing for. Imagine this island. Imagine a 3D holographic projection of this island. What if four teams, (a) Ranil-CBK-Mangala, (b) Gotabaya-Mahinda (I say it in that sequence because Mahinda cannot contest for the presidency) (c) the JVP and (d) the FSP were invited to present their visions as holographic projections, and we had to vote on them, knowing that we were voting for the kind of Sri Lanka we want now and in the foreseeable future. I for one would vote for the Gotabaya–Mahinda presentation on the modernization-developmental front. I think Team A is a dangerous disaster and should be replaced “by any means necessary as Malcolm said. I DO NOT believe that either the FSP (Gunaratnam) or the JVP are currently capable of taking over the responsibility of developing this country, but I believe they may have the capacity to mature to that point after 15-20 years.

To put it more simply, I think this country needs to be built up to its fullest potential. I think that would mean an East Asian/Chinese paradigm of development and modernity. Given our non-Confucian culture, I do not think we can fully achieve that, or rather, I think we can achieve the (Mahathirian) Malaysian model of/within this East Asian paradigm. That is our future task and only a Gotabaya led or driven administration, which means an administration in which he is President or pillar of a Sirisena-Gota-Mahinda troika.

Where does Gunaratnam come in? We need a magnificent new home that can last for generations, even centuries, and Gotabaya is the only one who can clear the ground, lay the foundation, design and build it, but I do envisage a possible and necessary renovation down the road for a future generation of occupants, and that renovation needs, to my mind, the consciousness of a combination of the FSP and JVP, especially in the domain and dimension of South-North brotherhood. This is not a Gotabhaya vs. Gunaratnam choice, nor a Gotabhya plus Gunaratnam combination, but a Gotabhaya-Gunaratnam sequence.

Both Gotabaya and Gunaratnam have blood on their hands. They both fought in our civil wars. Neither has made a self-criticism of the excesses and crimes of those times. However, as Jean Paul Sartre said, one cannot make history without “Dirty Hands” (the title of one of his plays), and both have evolved since then. Of course one cannot compare the two, since gotabahaya fought in a war of national reunification and later helped save his country and restore peace. Gunaratnam fought in a war in which his party murdered many left activists including the most humane, enlightened progressive we ever produced—Vijaya Kumaratunga! But both Gotabaya and Gunaratnam can contribute positively, though greatly unequally, to the future of this country, in the proper sequence.

Premadasa was responsible for rescuing his country from the JVP’s barbarism and that did mean a lot of blood. But I regard him as one of our greatest leaders. Even more so Mahinda who presided over the war effort. Deng Hsiao Peng was responsible for the events at Tien An Mien square but he was one of the finest leaders China and indeed Asia ever produced; uplifting his country from poverty in record time for any country in the world, and without the benefit of colonialism. Putin has blood on his hands because he saved his country from Chechen terrorism and is helping Assad save his country from Al Qaeda and ISIS. Putin is a great leader. Lenin, Mao and Stalin were responsible for a great many deaths but they were great historical figures. Lee Kuan Yew was a ruthless figure but a great statesman who was the architect of the Singaporean miracle. Gotabaya as President or a Gotabaya-Mahinda-Sirisena triangle, is our best bet for a modern Sri Lankan developmental miracle.

If genuine peace and democracy dawn on this island, this country will perish.

This island can survive only when it is subjected to constant conflict, racism, bigotry, killing, fraud, …… simply because the nation building process has been and still is based on confrontation and conflict not on equality, consensus, and compassion.

The state conducts successful wars long and term, but fails in peace, development, justice, good governance, ………………

I am with you on this Gota for president thingy. So far, we have tried every type; now it’s time for a serial-killer. Gotta put the fear of God into Lankans. At the height of his powers Lankans in California were afraid to even email each other. That’s the kind of fear the little pip-squeak instilled even outside Lanka. That’s a special kinda talent that will surely come in handy for a Lankan president. To hell with progress fear is what Lankans need.

The Anti-minority Sinhala-Buddhist hero Gotabaya Rajapakshe is an Ultra-Nationalist Racist and is well-known dictator. After winning the war against LTTE and after Mahinda Rajapakshe won the presidential election and the general election with a two third majority, it was NOT Mahinda Rajapakshe but Gotabaya Rajapakshe who behaved like he was the owner of Sri Lanka, he took all the powers into his hands and Mahinda Rajapakshe became a victim and finally lost the election. It was Gotabaya who made Mahinda unpopular among the minorities. After the war ended, Gotabaya did not allow his brother Mahinda to solve the National problem, instead of taking a moderate path, he selected the option of following the path of a few Sinhala-Buddhist Ultra-Nationalist Racists and Pseudo-Patriots, thinking that by whipping up Ultra-Nationalism and Sinhala Patriotism among the majority Sinhala-Buddhists, and by intimidating and further suppressing the Minorities (Tamils and Muslims) he can rule the country for ever as the hero of the Majority (Sinhala-Buddhists). He used the armed forces in the North to control the civilians, a military rule. He treated the armed forces or ‘war heros’ with no respect, they were made to clean up Colombo like slaves. He created the grease devils and then the BBS to threaten and suppress the Muslims. He used white vans to abduct and disappear those who acted against the government. He ordered the armed forces to shoot whoever protested against the government in both North and South (including the prisoners). The main person who made Mahinda Rajapakshe lose the election was none other than Gotabaya Rajapakshe. If this dictator becomes the next president, it will be a military rule and BBS will be his personal advisers. Another Pol Pot in the making. Most of the members in the joint opposition also do not like Gotabaya, they know very well how much a dictator he will become and all of them will be made his slaves.

However, if he contest the next Presidential election, not a single minority (Tamils & Muslims) will vote for him and the Sinhala-Buddhists are divided among UNP and SLFP. He can never win the election. It is only Dayan J de Silva’s dream and his dream will never come true.

DJ’s ideas or analysis are rubbish, foolish and his motive is not in the interest of people, nation, humanity. He wants a bloodbath in the soil as happened in 1958, 1971, 1983, 1989 & 2009. He did not touch the real problems like rule of law, corruption, justice system, unity of the people, equality etc.
He focus on Mahinda & Ranil. Mahinda and Ranil are two individuals but this island consist of over 20 million people, different languages, different religions and the island had constant internal troubles because of the breakdown of law and order system due to etnicised, politicised institutions. He thinks Premadasa and Mahinda are great leaders because they eliminated JVP and LTTE. The reality is that what factors contributed towards the creation of JVP and LTTE and what measures should have taken to prevent such events happning is the most important need. Mahinda was together with JVP when Premadasa massacred Sinhalese. When tamils were massacred by Mahinda Ranil was not with LTTE. Premadasa armed LTTE when India was fighting LTTE. LTTE was initially funded, trained by India? Does Srilanka have the power to stand against India or China or US. The victims of Mahinda & Premadasa are Srilankans. We need a leadership to challenge the fundamentalism whether it is religious or racial and bring people together respecting the diveristy.

RE: Which Choice, Which Future For Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka, the Land of Naive Veddah Aethho, illegally occupied by the Paras, had many choices, after the Para-English, Para-Suddhas left.

The cure set of of Paras, especially Para-Mahinda Rajapaksa and Para-Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his Para-cronies, like you, have made it worse.

The nest you can do, is to leave the Land of Native Veddaj Aethho, long with your Para-crone buddies.

You has 5 years to fix after the war, and you made a mess of it.

Please leave the Land of Native Veddah Aethho.

This is the problem. Trying to fix the problem with personalities. Let put it this way, you’d prefer Gotabayism and Gunaratnaism to follow. That would create a national identity. Who is going to lead either is yet to be known. It can be anyone.

The way this Yahapalayana is travelling, Gota and Gune combination is not a bad proposition.

Just one example .There was no Pathalaya when Gota was at the wheel.

My Elders tell me Gune and his mates did the same to both UNP t and SLFP hugs who ripped off and terrorized poor Dalits in the Village.

There is an additional plus. Gota is clean as a Whistle.

Conrade other Kumar, took LKR 25 Lakhs from Dr Ranil.

I heard it from the other Mr clean UNP Wije, whom I think , will contribute to a nice tripartite set up to save Srilanka from the current doom.

Whatever is stated, the reality of this country today is that…. we spent billions of dollars to fight a war with massive destruction to our own citizens with deep scars that will be left for history, in the end we are in a debt track which makes us pawn part of this country to China for 99 years and we fail to understand that 35 years ago if we had been more accommodative, understanding, less hegemonies / arrogant towards our own citizen minorities and agreed to a autonomous system within a united Sri Lanka, we would not be selling our country to outsiders the way it is happening now. Sri Lanka is just about to sign an agreement with China for a 99 year lease of the complete Hambantota Port area to China giving 80% control of the facility to China, something which even China did not give the British over Hong Kong. This is a lesson to other nations that racism should never be part of a countries governance.

GOTA is the most dangerous man in Sri Lanka now. Because as a killer and an architect of the killing fields in Sri Lanka, he is being promoted as a presidential candidate for 2020. He is not only an uneducated moron, but also suffering from some inferiority complex triggered by his experience as a petrol shed assistant in US (for his qualification without even GCE Ordinary level he couldn’t get any better in a developed country like US) and hence displays some vengeance on educated folks in Sri Lanka.

Like Premadasa, he has a tendency to things at his own whims and fancies. Gota has notoriously stole not only billions of dollars from purchasing discarded war planes from Ukraine but also the credit from Sarath F. for strategically leading the last battle against LTTE.

So this dangerous man should never be allowed to rise as a presidential candidate.

DJ, your pipe dream will never be realized and remember, you will never be our foreign minister.

There are times in history when one can remain above the fray and there are other times when one has to pick a side, make a choice. Yes, he made the choice long ago, as early as January 2015 using the most ridiculous assertions in Rupavahini on being dangled the carrot of being made FM. Having used the most convoluted non-intellectual arguments at that time, he realizes he has no future except with that group and his articles are mere attempts at asserting his “intellectuality” while providing himself with a platform to further his ambitions. Dream on, DJ and while at it why not explain why your predictions on what would happen if MR loses never materialized.

Dayan Jayathilake proves that he is a failed product of the post-colonial education which followed the western system. It allowed the candidate to write something about something iomportant to them and offered a title “PhD” in return. but, most of them are failures.

See here, Dayan Jayathilake is using the HafiilFarisz’s advertisementn about the new socialist guy who was looking greener pastures in australia. He could not find employment there. Now, he wants to develop Sri lanka because Sri lankan political system is the best for those who know nothing but get employment with the job description of development of the motherland. At least gets convoys of vehicles, a duty free car permit, free money, free food, free housing and best schools in colombo for children and legal permission get commission by offering contracts to “firends”. Who knows he may follow the Weerqawansh method and may give free housesg to each of his relatives.

Anyway, In Dayan Jayathilake’s proposal, just the way sirisena became decoy in Ranil-CBK-Mangala-Inida-US plan, now gotabhaya is a decoy in Mahinda Rajapakse-China plan. If the plan is implemented as it is sirisena will be in jail in no time. Because gota just stay silent as he was earlier and relatives run wild where ever they can.

Finally it ends up as another failure to voters. It will be the same “thattu-maru” method. Anyway, I am pretty sure after Gota, sinhala people will be again trouble probably more.

If sirisena stays in the same govt without being the president, he will be jailed. that is for sure.

D.J has become a ‘propagandist’ after being an ambassador while degrading his academic credentials. He is highly partisan. He should either become a full time politician on behalf of the Joint Opposition or preserve his integrety(if anything is left?). He seems to be engaged in an exercise to ‘DEFINE” the topic of future political discussions and provide publicity to anotther Rajapakse hoping that his writings and speeches will give credibility to Rajapakse clan’s political fortunes in coming years. D.J’s role of ‘propagandist’ is quite different to his father’s role as a critical journalist or even to someone that can be called an ‘intellectual’. There is a limit to how low an academic can go when it comes to politics in Sri Lanka!

DJ has again downgraded our aspirations by suggesting Malaysia (rather than Singapore) as the ideal to work for. For that alone he should go to the naughty corner and be awarded the dunce’s hat.

Sri Lanka, instead, should be creating a model for itself, capitalising on our abundant resources, and harnessing the strengths and talents of ALL Sri Lankans to make it succeed. It may take time because we will have to purge the present political self-servers who have produced this mess, and develop a young and competent set of leaders with the vision and determination to take us forward.

DJ’s proposed ‘troika’ are yesterdays men, a busted flush, who have blown their chances. The best they could do for the country is to ride off into the sunset, taking their ‘muttu’ DJ with them.

    —————–
It looks, This proposal is planned completely for manipulation and exploitation of voters. So, Yahapalanaya knew this in advance. That is why they had to clean the Central Bank.

It looks Gunarathnam’s only motive is to land a position in the parliament as a Party Leader. So, he will have a successful career at least in his later days I suppose. Because, he could not make it in Austrlia. Secondly, that gives him the opportunity to confront JVP.

Probably, it was Rajapakse and Jackol opposition that pushed gunarathname to make a roar and some how aim for winning a parliamentary position.

UNP all knew this how it would ultimately open up.

Anyway, this is an absurd proposal which doe snot help the country and it helps the prospective politicians nad leasers who want to use the electoral franchise for the benefit and advancement of a few politicians.

Dayan Jayathilake as an experienced professionla and as a political -guru does not have any break-through ingeniuos proposals. It is the same old crap. fool the voters and live the life until the country goes bankrupt.

As women working in the middle east send money, politicians are not stingy to spend it, be arrogant and live a good life. that is all.

I agree with Dayan’s fundamental premise: Gothabaya is much more interested in developing the country (with Chinese help) than anyone in the UNP. You just have to look at the Colombo Expressway. Beautification of Colombo was also Gothabaya’s idea. Now, what is interesting to me, as someone with a technical background: is Gothabaya also interested in developing the country’s industrial base and creating a class of technical workers, such as we see in India & China? Compared to Japan, for example, Sri Lanka is much more mineral abundant. Yet Japan is obviously leagues ahead in technology. If Gothabaya is willing to invest in education (creating engineers and other technical workers) who can exploit the country’s abundant mineral wealth, then Sri Lanka could see a massive turn-around and consequent increase in standard of living, within 10 years or so. The Chinese help is only necessary at the beginning.

Why don’t you become farsighted and promote Namal Rajapakse ?

Why you as a smart patriot and a political geriatric still take sides with political geriatric groups whether they are green, red , blue, yellow or whatever other colour?

60 yrs of bankrupt policies of all the political parties and their failures to learn from number race riots and 3 youth
rebellions, mass migration of citizens regardless of language or religion, export of women labour to richer countries what hope you have with your political gurus or the gurus who are leading the country now.
Let young leaders rise from the youths . Can you identify some and promote them using your political selling techniques.
