Who Wants To Cry For Diana Gamage?

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

Shyamon Jayasinghe

Today’s MP stands at a village in his district as a bureaucrat flying in a duty free luxury car, hemmed by state-paid security. Villagers are frightened at the sight of the luxury car and fleet of security vehicles.”

Member of parliament Diana Gamage has been sacked by her party, the SJB!

She says it is a joke. But no one in Sri Lanka is depraved enough to see a joke in what appears as rightful punishment for her and as appropriate precaution for her party.

Diana may now jump to Pohottuwa since it was her Pohottuwa support measure that cost her SJB slot. Diana voted for the 20th Amendment! This was clearly against her party’s decision. Anything better the party could have done for Diana?

Yet, Diana is undaunted. She attacks Sajith and the party in personal terms whereas Sajith Premadasa did his duty to ensure party discipline.

Support for 20th Amendment

But why did Dian support that awful legislation to clothe Gotabaya Sir with powers more than that of the President of the United States? Does she not regret that? Did she know before hand what 20th Amendment meant? Or did she think it was legislation to stop encroachment on temple land?

Well, she has lived in parliament months after that law had been passed. Diana should, surely, have witnessed the damage done? And where the country is heading?

The fact that she must have realised the damaging consequences of the law is clear. On that assumption Diana should have hidden her mortal body in a cupboard or disappeared during Lanka Lockdown. Now that she is sacked she should feel a guilt gone.

Full Of Dianas

To go on record, I haven’t heard Diana making any sensible speech in parliament – ever and the party badly needs good debaters.

The point is that our parliament is full of Dianas both in male and female formations. Most of the MPs are ignorant. Their economic literacy is low;their sociological literacy is low and even their political literacy is naive. Most persons want to become MPs for the perks; for the power to show their pakum to fellowmen;to get pensions; to eat free lunches and, of course, not blink an eyelid about the possibility of eking out a portfolio, which is the path to political nirvana.

Getting Better Than Dianas

The existence of Dainas reminds us more desperately to think of ways and means of getting better quality men and women as members to parliament. Over the last two decades, Sri Lanka has lost quality MPs. Many of those we have are riff-raff brought in by party leaders for their thuggery and ability to entice voters through fright. They are like what the cat brings in. We have a murder convict, who had been heading to the gallows, now ensconced and looking respectable in a member’s chair.

How many of our MPs have had an education beyond O’Level? Persons with mere nine grade, run key ministries having huge budgetary allocations. In the days of the pre-JR constitution, Sri Lanka had candidates for parliamentary election who had to pass the most important hurdle of popular acceptability and respect at village electorate level. After JR, the party bureaucracy and party head does the pick of candidates from the centre. This introduces impurities and malevolent influences and other corruptions into the selection process. No need for village level acceptance. Electorates became District -based and not village-cluster based. The vital nexus between the Village population and the candidate, who often was a Village Headmen, was lost. This immediate nexus was the primary control of a politician about to go weird. The people knew their man better. On the other hand, the District PR system ruined that base link. Today’s MP stands at a village in his district as a bureaucrat flying in a duty free luxury car, hemmed by state -paid security. Villagers are frightened at the sight of the luxury car and fleet of security vehicles. No genuine camaraderie can be built with villagers in a context such as this.

The distance of today’s MP from villagers mean that the former must depend on ‘catchers’ to keep the necessary subservient connection. In turn, these brokers must be given portions of village-level petty contracts. Sri Lanka had a hundred- year- old local government system that was running well. I can say that, as primary level witness as I was in charge of local government in my young days of the administrative service. The context post-JR ruined this grassroots local government system.

Relief For Diana

Lots of things more to say. But thinking of Diana I will stop. Diana can overcome any frustration by the factual realisation that any other MP at her level will do the same as she has done. What is more, any sacked MP can go to court and attempt getting her disciplinary action removed or suspended. The side-effects of democracy!

Why are you bringing Diana in to
discussion? You should talk about the “Yahapalanaya Government “ —-> a two headed snake of MS and RW.
They could have put our country in the “RIGHT “ path.
By arresting the people who had ruled before them.

Diana Gamage or the cheap candidates would do anything going beyond the levels of Miriskudu-Thrower-Jayweera.

This woman does not seem to know the gravity of the problems that masses face today.
Her to allow his lips, drolling the kind of ” I WILL FURTHER SUPPORT CURRENT GOVT of GOTABAYA “…. says it all.
      :
While not a single of 6.9 mio voted for current stupid men, make every effort to see hideouts, this woman Diana Gamage to fall this deep is beyond my bearing.

      Naman,
“They could have put our country in the “RIGHT “ path.”
Yes, You are right that they could have put our country in the “Right path” but they didn’t do it. Similarly, Mahinda Rajapaksa Government would have put our country in the Right Path. But they didn’t do it. It is also applicable to previous leaders of both UNP and SLFP leaders.
The question is why they couldn’t put the country in the “Right Path”? The reasons could be they didn’t know what is the Right path” for the country or they preferred the “Wrong Path” is more benefit to their benefit. In my opinion they preferred to go in the “Wrong Path” because the “Right Path” may end of their political life.

    Dear Shyamon,
    .
to be seen yet. So, you think that Diana will go to the courts, and they (of course!) will find a way of keeping her in Parliament.
    .
What a woman! She knows a lot, like Mark Antony loved Julius Caesar dearly, but loved Rome more and therefore stabbed Caesar.
    .
Well there’s no reason why all readers should know that William S. plagiarised Plutarch and had Marcus Brutus as Chief conspirator (“fashioned” by Caius Cassius) and then Mark A. “fashioned” the the plebs; upshot Brutus ran on his sword, held by his bondman, whose name I can’t remember.
    .
It’s not enough to sack Diana from Parliament. She ought to be flown into Afghanistan and handed over to the Taliban.

    • 19

Sinhala_Man: Just imagine the “Leader of Opposition”- Sajith nominating a woman like “Diana” to Parliament. Compare that with the nomination of Ms.Harini Amarasuriya nominated from “NPP”. What poles apart even to think of a comparison? That along speaks the “Calibre” of Sajith Premadasa and his “SJB”. Do we need any more evidence to assess this “Sajith” factor and that of “SJB”?

      19

      Sinhala_Man,
“She ought to be flown into Afghanistan and handed over to the Taliban.”

What a disgusting proposal considering the way Taliban is treating women in Afghanistan.
Worse thing is, this proposal is coming from a guy who is lamenting for deterioration of democracy in this country.

        7

        Eagle Eye,
        .
That’s only a manner of speaking. I will never have anything to do with the Taliban.
        .
However, a case could be made out for “punishing” Diana.
        .
Yes, we want democracy. Note that Diana did not find her way into Parliament through any democratic process – and what has she done since getting there?
        .
She manipulated the system, to have had a dud party registered. She allowed the SJB to use it to contest (Ranil is to blame for allowing such a situation to arise in the first place), and made it conditional upon nominating her to parliament.
        .
Since getting into Parliament, she has not contributed much. I remember a speech in which she asked that tourists be catered to with Night Clubs and with a supply of prostitutes. I dare say that intellectual arguments could be formulated for such things, but do you seriously suggest that such things were foremost in the minds of Lankan citizens?
        .
In silencing her we would not be doing anything “undemocratic”, but we must, ourselves, display greater moral sensibility.

          Sinhala_Man,
If Diana Gamage criticized Rajapakshes as corrupt war criminals who massacred Tamils, you will say she is the best lady in town. Hypocrites!

Hypocrites, there are one too many different myriad of Hues and colours, on both sides of the divide for anyone to be comfortable with.
As far as Hypocrites are concerned, it boils down to what lens type one is using to view, to make any sense. They differ as the different Grains of Rice differ from each other in the same bag of Rice!

As a gratuity, organic manure in form of various kind of chinese excrements is today being offered to those rural farmers island wide. There are international laws that would never allow the kind of organic material s be transported against national qurantining guide lines. Countries like Australia would nt allow even cooked eatables be found in passengers luggages. Reports say that the imported manure from China becoming difficult to even keep in store houses because dogs tear off the sacks and eat them. Best would be to offer these manures to those 6. 9 millions of voters as their main course, while prices of rice are now on a rise. That would the best not wasting the funds.

“…when the president is a serial-killer and the prime minister is a murderer?”
      —–
It is not fair to call President is a serial-killer and the Prime Minister is a murderer because they gave the leadership to eliminate Tamil terrorists who massacred Native Sinhala Buddhist men, women, children and killed even the fetus of pregnant Sinhala women using suicide bombers, land mines, claymore bombs, chemical weapons, swords and machetes and gave the opportunity to people in this country to live in peace which was denied by Tamil terrorists for three decades.

Serial- Killers are usually diagnosed being Psychopaths.
If you do not want to identify your President and Prime Minister as Serial Killer and murderer, why don’t you address them as Psychopaths?

Psychopaths sounds too respectable, maybe you prefer both being known as “Ethnic Cleansers”. How about “Mass Exterminators”?

I am struggling to find more outrageous, apt titles for both of them.

Were the SJB and its leader in their senses when they made her an MP, knowing well her credibility?
The SJB paid the price for it much sooner than anyone expected.

Alas, Sri Lanka has gone to the dogs, when it comes to leaders and MPs.

Gone are the days when our leaders were educated, intelligent, and knowledgeable representatives, who made us proud when they spoke, represented Sri Lanka with dignity and class abroad, and adhered to high standards. They were not perfect, but of higher standing. Now we have corrupt thugs, murderers, felons, uneducated louts, and cronies, who make us cringe when they represent this country.

      Rajash,
      .
no need to make any kind of pleas, they will DEFINITELY do it again. Speculations are there that the upcoming budget will be more favourable to ps leaders and all working in grass root level. That will be another carrot ahead of the PC elections. As you know regardless of the race, our FOOLs would bend down to a rice packet and a glass of arak…. they would even offer their lovely ones for a night … if Rajapakshes would ask it for…. That is how the genetics is made also feeding them with BUDDGAMA-sinhala buddhist-pills. The other pills would be ” jathiwadhaya- RACISM” and ” western invasion”: These pills become coloured depending on the situation.

May well be, they have to replace the STAPAL (main courses) with “imported chinese manure”

First to be tested it with GOTABAYA, Maihinda, Chamal, Basil and all others, because they are more close to Chinese deals than any others in this country.

      Composition of CHINESE make:
Asuchi (excrements) of the Chinese (future or better said, already colonial masters of our people).

Reports are there that sacks filled with “imported organic manure” are not even possible to store because dogs come and eat them. ……

Our Presidents, MPs, businessmen, judges, administrators, writers–there is something odd about them, something sleazy, something repulsive, don’t you think ?

They look like Wannabes who are imitating some foreign idea, without the background, the values, the skills and the personality to function in that role.

Sometime back Mr Jayasinghe wrote that Ranil W. will always rise from defeat.

Ranil has come back to parliament shamelessly, through a constitutional abomination, a man who the voters refused to mandate. The voters hate this man so much they refused to give the UNP a single seat.

    Is that a rising ?

Australia becomes poorer spiritually and culturally with every new immigrant.

    They are all very odd.

Diana registstered the party SJB. She has the deed of registration.

Rajapaksas used her to break up the UNP.

Sajith should merge his SJB with the UNP. If they are divided both are doomed. Instead they should be fighting against Rajapaksas.

    This is a distraction.

All Muslim MPs from SLMC and ACMC except their leaders (2) voted in support of 20A. Aren’t they going to be sacked too?

  • 7

…Were the SJB and its leader in their senses when they made her an MP, knowing well her credibility?…….
Substitute 6.9M voters for “SJB and its leader” and “her” for GR. You have the current picture.
…….The SJB paid the price for it much sooner than anyone expected…….
Again “SJB” = “6.9M voters”, all still paying a price.
All are wise in retrospect – how nice to decide about “yesterday” – “today”. I will be rich playing the stock market.
Why not try to blow up Ranil any other way, Dear SJ.

I am writing this comment from my memory. Memory may play tricks!

SJB was formed just a few weeks before the nomination date for the Presidential Election and Sajith Premadasa was in search of a recognized political party to contest on that party and their symbol .
That is how his party contested on the “telephone” symbol.

Was it Diana Gamage who made it possible and as part of the deal, She was made a nationalist list MP.

Fishing MPs was one of the main theme in Sri Lanka political landscape. As MR said few years ago, every party especially SLFP now SLPP is opened to everyone, its like a swinging SALOON door. Free to come in and go out. However, face value says that the IN and OUT are based on multiple deals, monetary, ministerial and cover-ups. So Diana’s case is nothing new and in normal.
