By Dayan Jayatilleka –

Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka
Dr. Siri Gamage has taken exception to my classification of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the JVP-NPP’s trajectory as a shift to the right, and my classification of them as neo-Menshevik, by which I obviously make reference to the most famous Right in the history of the Left. He says my argumentation is ideological and represents an outdated ideological view at that.
It is not ideological. It is a classification. It is a classification based on Anura and the NPP’s practice. By practice I mean its stance and actions in the important domain of policy and policy decisions.
Decision and its implementation constitute the most crucial of actions because it reflects character. By character I do not mean only moral-ethical character, but political and socioeconomic (class) character.
My classification of the turn of the AKD administration as being a shift to the Right and the occupation of a position which belongs to the right, is analytical, not ideological—and in some corporate and neoliberal quarters would be considered positive, a compliment to the new government.
I intended it as a critique, but a critique which was based on its actions, not one in which the conclusion is reached by imposing some external ideological criteria. I have also brought to bear an analysis of AKD’s discourse, accompanying his policy actions.
I have done this, not focusing on minor or secondary issues but the primary ones.
Firstly, the Debt Trap. Any one or any administration may fail to improve a situation in inherits and has consistently criticized, but at least it must TRY to do so, before it surrenders.
AKD and the NPP had a sharp, consistent criticism of Ranil Wickremesinghe’s policy on debt—his responsibility for mounting indebtedness and his anti-austerity measures and strategy of economic contraction in the matter of debt management. Anura having become President, and the NPP having become the Government, did not even try to implement their own manifesto and mandate as regards the debt crisis and instead, explicitly signed-off on Ranil’s Debt deal which they had excoriated. Anura actually praised Ranil (“the political leadership” of “two years”) in his official remarks afterwards.
Is or isn’t Ranil to the Right of AKD and the NPP’s earlier stated stance? Isn’t his macroeconomic policy and especially his policy on debt restructuring one of economic neoliberalism? Is or isn’t that a rightwing economic ideology? Then isn’t Anura and the NPP’s prompt adoption of his policy—without even trying a revisionist or reformist adjustment—a shift to the Right?
Is it leftwing, rightwing, center-left or centrist to sign a debt deal that hugely benefits the foreign and local bondholders? Is it rightwing or leftwing to do so without convening an all-parties roundtable and seeking consensus or bringing it to Parliament beforehand and seeking cross-party endorsement? Isn’t unilateralism in the service of a lopsided debt deal, a characteristically rightwing move?
Secondly, the interlinked issue of national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, economic dependence and subalternity.
The Left and Center-Left attempts to reduce dependence and to safeguard national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. The neoliberal Right doesn’t give a damn about these.
Apart from selling out to the major western asset management firms in the ISB deal, why is Anura expanding the Indian footprint in the North-East and the Chinese footprint in the South, thereby eroding our sovereignty and reinforcing our dependence, in a manner that no previous administration (most of them ‘centrist’) did—and going 180 degrees in the opposite direction of what he preached for decades right up to a few months ago, against external economic encroachments?
Were Anura, the JVP and the NPP leftwing then– and if so, what is AKD-NPP’s diametrically opposite policy practice and direction now, except rightwing?
Left, Right
Dr. Gamage attempts to abolish the distinctions of Right and Left as outdated. He should re-read Norberto Bobbio who combated this pernicious ideological attempt and proposed a diagrammatic representation of political-ideological positions. He wrote the landmark book ‘Right and Left: The Significance of a Political Distinction’ (1994) in order to combat the post-Cold War propaganda by the newly hegemonic ideology to say such distinctions were outdated and irrelevant.
They are not. Even in the USA today, mainstream scholarship and quality journalism discuss American politics using such categories.
Of course, it is not only ‘Right’ and ‘Left’ that matter. It is also the Center and its variations Center-Left and Center-Right.
Dr. Gamage should read a brilliant disquisition by Kusum Wijetilleke, a young researcher on the current political situation and choices in Sri Lanka, using these categories and leaning on the latest in Western especially American political and economic thinking.
In Sri Lanka today the Center is unprecedentedly weak. The JVP-NPP having occupied the Center-Left space as an Opposition Movement, have abandoned both left and center and shifted or (more charitably) tilted Right as an administration. At the moment there is no one to fill the center-Left space. Even the ‘Center-Right’ is unfilled because of the confusion within the SJB whether it is ‘progressive centrist’, ‘center-right’, or simply ‘Right’.
Examples of Rightwing Pivots
There are those who may think that my contention of a rapid rightward pivot by a leftwing or left-populist leader and movement, is unrealistic and lacks credibility. Those who may think so have a poor knowledge of history, both recent and of a century ago.
Greece’s rightward pivot by Prime Minister Tsipras and his Syriza Government, going against the mandate of a Referendum which they won just hours before on the debt issue, has been the subject of a famous book and many expositions by Yanis Varoufakis, the finance minister who resigned his portfolio over the treachery. The pathetic fate of Syriza should tell the NPP-JVP where it is headed.
More historic and ‘classic’, is the case of the Kuomintang led by Chiang Kaishek—who was defeated by Mao in the Chinese Revolution, fled to Taiwan and colonized it (calling it the ‘Republic of China’). Chiang turned on his Communist allies and massacred them in Shanghai and Canton (immortalized in Andre Malraux’s Man’s Fate) having abandoned his left-tinged nationalism pivoted into an alliance with the foreign financial and business interests who had enclaves in China’s coastal cities. That was in 1927. But just the year before, in 1926, Chiang’s Kuomintang, which under his illustrious predecessor Sun Yat Sen had been militarily supported by Lenin, was still an Honorary member of the Executive Committee of the Communist International (ECCI) and an ally of the USSR.
Anura Dissanayake is somewhere between Tsipras and Chiang. The NPP-JVP is somewhere between Syriza and the Kuomintang.
Sirima and Anura
To conclude, there is one matter on which Dr. Gamage and I might agree. He reassures us that the Anura-Led NPP is not at all like the Sirimavo-led united front government in which the left was an ally or partner, not the main player.
It may be indeed the case that I have underestimated the difference between Sirimavo’s 1970-1977 United Front Government and Anura’s NPP Government.
The NPP has so far lost nine (9) of the fourteen (14) elections held to Multi-Purpose Cooperative Societies (MPCS) in the most diverse parts of the island. Sirimavo’s UF Government didn’t get unpopular so fast. Nor did any other Government before this. Anura is moving downhill faster than Sirima.

To hell with this ideological/theoretical/academic idiotic nonsense!
–
This is a classic case of Lankan …… a godforsaken PhD from some fly by night place writes ……. trying to make it come out sounding like wisdom. ……. But comes out sounding like Wisdom of Norman: Norman Wisdom!
–
It doesn’t matter if the cat is black or white ……. as long as it catches mice.
–
–
The bleeding bloody obvious truth/reality out there is ……… the current JVP/NPP government is the most democratic and law abiding government – focusing on the welfare of the people/country; not themselves or their party – in Lanka’s post-independent history!
–
The inability to acknowledge that, does not say anything about the JVP/NPP ………. but speaks volumes about the person/people who is/are unable to acknowledge it: their ill-breeding, lack of proper education, low-class, lack of mental-development, lack of honest source of survival other than sucking up to monumentally corrupt politicians.
–
If anything I’ve written is untrue, I’m open for debate.
–
Please please please take me on.

Nimal,
Dayan PhD is legit. “Jayatilleka received a M.Phil. degree from the University of Colombo in October 2002.[1] He was visiting senior fellow and adjunct professor at the Johns Hopkins University between 2005 and 2006.[12] He was later appointed senior lecturer at the University of Colombo.[1][11][12] He was a member of the Council of Management of the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BCIS).[1][11] He received a PhD degree from the Griffith University in 2007 “
That said, a PhD doesn’t make one a genius. Just look at G.L. Pieris, or W.D. Lakshman, or Nalin de Silva. It just gives you the right to be taken seriously when you spout garbage .
/
nimal fernando / January 23, 2025
OC,
–
“He received a PhD degree from the Griffith University in 2007 “
–
Proves my point! Never heard of the godforsaken place ……… I can vaguely remember an allusion by Carlo Fonseka or someone about him being in Harvard. Perhaps he couldn’t measure up at Harvard and had to find a place that would give him a PhD.
–
Hasn’t people like these ……… done enough damage/harm to the country behind the cover of a dodgy – or even a legit – PhD?
/
nimal fernando / January 24, 2025
Succeed or fail ……… what is happening in SL today ……… is remarkable in the annals of “political-undertakings” at any stage of man’s efforts/endeavours for better and meaningful representative government/rule.
–
Albeit it’s happening in far off little known country.
–
But the few outsiders who have seen it …….. have not failed to comprehend the significance.
–
PhD or not (I don’t know or care to know) …….. I feel Lasantha Pethiyagoda is one countryman who has grasped the significance …….. and articulate it better than I can.
–
Blame Sinhala_Man for my lousy English …… the destruction left behind in their wake …….. by teachers who themselves have learned English …….. from Teach Yourself books.

I like your last sentence about PhDs, Old Codger. It gives you the right to be taken seriously when you spout garbage. You should also develop a mannerism. Have you watched GL when he spouts garbage. He got the right style. You have to go to Oxford to develop it. Griffith just would not do. I wonder whether some of them were genuine PhDs. You could plagiarise a PhD thesis.
/
SJ / January 27, 2025

“You could plagiarise a PhD thesis.”
Not so easy now.
Even in Sri Lanka they use software to check plagiarism.
There is a limit to text repeated from another source (and it includes citations).
But then there are ghost writers.

My dear OC totally agree with you!. Thanks for calling a spade a spade. I will add something to that. Many individuals of Sri Lankan origin have obtained PhD level degrees and they act like they are like all powerful scholars, ironically they do not prove it by their actions. You have added above the examples. SRILANKEN mlecha media inflated them as balloons. All others emulated them by applying “SADU SADU effect ” . In practice that is not the case. Although PhD holders can focus on many areas, they are still not perfect.
Thanks to OC.

Forgive me for repeating something that I had previously said on CT.
Dr. N M Perrera once addressed our College assembly, when I was in Gr. 10.
This is what he had said that day.

Dr Dayan Jayathilake has become a lost sole. he will never be a ambassador or get any other position under NPP rule. He brings total unnecessary theoretical concept and filling up article with empty words.
In simple terms achievements of NPP government include
Disciplined parliament
Non corrupt politicians
No interference to the legal system and police.
Getting people who lute the country legally accountable
Trying to lift moral and ethical standard of broken people of all Sri lankans
For me it is more than enough for the time being.
But Dayan you don’t want to see things you never imagines government of ordinary people could achieve.
You have a better role by teaching Ranil Uncle how to rebuild a party of rouges and get the power back again without wasting time here .

Hello OC,
I wonder why we learned that the Chinese invented Gunpowder and Paper and that the Indians invented Zero at Primary School. We also learned about the Indus Valley Civilisation and the travels of Marco Polo.
The man who got the better of James Boswell, the Travel Companion and Biographer of the learned Dr Samuel Johnson, never attended University. His name was Jamie Fleeming and he replied to Boswell’s impertinent question with “I’m the Laird of Udny’s feel, fa’s feel are you?”, knowing full well that Boswell was the Laird of Auchinleck.
Many of your responses to Deepthi and Lester have been just as succinct. It is the height of Snobbery and Ignorance to demean people that have “never attended a university”
Best regards

Lester / January 25, 2025
Scot,
“I wonder why we learned that the Chinese invented Gunpowder and Paper and that the Indians invented Zero at Primary School. We also learned about the Indus Valley Civilisation and the travels of Marco Polo.”
That is equivalent to a foreigner learning about Scotland by watching Braveheart.
1.) The Highlanders fought for Scotland’s independence
2.) Scots wear kilts
3.) William Wallace was executed for treason
4.) Scots were persecuted by Edward I
Conclusion: I am now an expert on Scotland. This type of one hour knowledge lacks any depth. China has 5000 years of history and Scotland has 700 or so.
Regarding the rest, your companion here is an insecure, impotent coward. Harassing Deepthi in foul language is not evidence of a “succint” mind. He doesn’t like intellectuals. He can’t understand Dayan’s technical language and got frustrated. You are not a good judge of people. Just like you claimed Trump is hardcore conservative. In fact, he’s from New York (liberal). The man grew up in a mansion and voted Democrat numerous times. I don’t think he has any loyalty, he is just a very clever opportunist, like the father, Fred.

Hello Lester,
This was Primary School, I was probably 7 at the time I read about the Chinese and the Indus Valley. We also learned about the Buddha and Brahmans around the same time.
We knew about our ancestors living in stone houses at Skara Brae Village in the Orkneys 5000 tears ago (not 700).
Here is a modern version of what we learned at Primary School
https://study.com/academy/lesson/skara-brae-facts-lesson-for-kids.html
Wallace never swore fealty to Edward (a Foreign King) so was not guilty of Treason. You sound more and more like an English Nationalist; are you a friend of Tommy Robinson or Nigel Farage?
Where did I say that Trump was a “hardcore conservative”? I have called him a Criminal, a Compulsive Liar and a Puppet of the Neocons. Are you Piers Morgan (another Trump Apologist) in disguise?
Best regars
/
Lester / January 26, 2025
Scot,
Still missing the point. The Chinese invented much more than paper and gunpowder: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Chinese_inventions. Hundreds of inventions. If there was a patent office for the ancient world, China would be among the top holders. Unfortunately, China does not have a “Hollywood” to brag about their achievements. The other barrier is language.
What did you learn about Buddha, that he was a Prince who defected and reached Enlightenment after sitting under a Bo Tree?
But this is not my point. I was referring to UK history books in schools not giving credit to Chinese and Indians for their discoveries in science & maths. I am sure even Caveman knew about Newton’s Laws on some level. Chinese & Indians did a lot of work in maths, they would have had the equations and what not. A perfect example is “Pascal’s Triangle.” Chinese came up with this in the 11th century: https://cdn.britannica.com/03/59803-004-88609FEC/numeral-triangle-representation-Chinese-Pascal-numerals-sum.jpg?w=300. You will not find any UK maths book that gives credit to the Chinese for this discovery. They only credit Pascal.
/
Lester / January 26, 2025
Similarly, China had a printing press in 600 CE, but Westerners are generally taught that Guttenberg was the first to invent it. Look at this website from a top university: https://lemelson.mit.edu/resources/johann-gutenberg: “The printing press, invented by German goldsmith Johann Gutenberg in 1448, has been called one of the most important inventions in the history of humankind.” It incorrectly states that Gutenberg invented the printing press. Now some idiot will find a website like Wikipedia which mentions China, that is not the point.

“Science and Civilisation in China” initiated and edited by British historian Joseph Needham.
Has nobody heard of this masterpiece?
/
Lester / January 25, 2025
No one is reading Needham at GCSE or A-level. Here is a real GCSE world history textbook (open source, available for everyone to read on the Internet) from 1996: https://archive.org/details/gcsemodernworldh0000wals/page/n3/mode/2up?view=theater. Look at the topics on China: “Did Communism make China a fairer country?” and “What was Communist China’s impact on the wider world?”
Here’s another one: https://global.oup.com/education/product/oxford-aqa-history-for-a-level-the-british-empire-c1857-1967-student-book-second-edition-9781382023177/?region=international&srsltid=AfmBOoqrCr1joRgVOU_hDYfqCKgYSr9AAzW8qsV11EOKQ2kyTJRXZtMq.
No mention of Chinese or Indian inventions. They are just treated as colonial peoples and some superficial whining over colonialism.
/
old codger / January 25, 2025
There are no qualifiers about GCSE here:
“For example, I have never seen a history book in the UK that talks about the scientific achievements of the ancient Chinese or ancient Hindus.”
The pants are still down.
/
old codger / January 25, 2025
Since those with pants down place great store in AI,
“Key aspects covered in British school texts about Ancient China:
Dynasties:
The Shang, Zhou (including the Spring and Autumn period and Warring States period), and Qin dynasties are usually the most prominent, with explanations of their major rulers, political systems, and key events.
Confucianism:
The teachings of Confucius are often central, discussing concepts like filial piety, social harmony, and the importance of education.
Inventions:
The invention of paper, the compass, gunpowder, and the printing press are usually mentioned as major contributions from ancient China. “
/
SJ / January 25, 2025
There was a false accusation:
“For example, I have never seen a history book in the UK that talks about the scientific achievements of the ancient Chinese or ancient Hindus.”
I only put the record straight.
*
Note: Not all history books are text books.
/
Lester / January 27, 2025
“Note: Not all history books are text books.”
Most people learn history, however limited, through textbooks. I have never read a history book after leaving secondary school. What’s the point? A bunch of dates and names.
So my original point about Chinese/Indian history is 100% accurate, despite whatever nonsense to the contrary.

leelagemalli / January 27, 2025
DTG,
Good question Mr. DTG. I really don’t know. There are things in life, we imitate what my elderly relatives ask me, because it all happens because of deceased loved ones. Religious ideas in our life are just beliefs. Some beliefs lead you to good, while others do not. See you or like are confined to your own world, because your thinking is totally caught by religious beliefs.
–
To me, it is really funny to go to a ” Preacher like APPACHCHI” and ask for “children”. How can a preacher / theologian help a married person to have children, when their biological clock and other factors unique to them do not seem to match any of the parents who normally produce children? Even if we take the same medicine to heal our health issues, each and everyone’s body functions are unique to the person.
.
In your case, it is completely different, you will not even be allowed to sneeze without following your biblical paragraphs. However, it depends on how you follow the religion you were born into. But never forget that “too much of a good thing” can no longer be a good thing.
/
davidthegood / January 27, 2025
leelagemalli, Thank you for your comments. For me of course, too much of a good thing from God, I want more and more. You may not see how I see our Creator God Jehovah forgave all humanity their sins (karma) as sinless Jesus took them on himself on the cross and gave a divine exchange so we could repent and be free from sin. Pray and ask for that redeeming gift and you will surely get it, as he is not interested about religions his created people name.

Hello Deepthi,
The only soul that I have ever seen is like Lester said a Bata “sole”. Lemon Sole, Dover Sole and Sole Traders all exist, but Immortal Souls don’t exist either in the Lower Brain or anywhere else.
I think Lelgemalli’s use of the word “soul” is the vernacular meaning of having compassion for other Humans and Animals. The Verbal Acrobatics that you and Lester employ would make the Post-Modernists proud; the Greeks called it Sophistry.

Deepthi Silva,
Soul is too complicated for Leela and the gang. They’re already confusing it with “sole” (they must be knowing bata shoe business well, as this is where most of the income goes). Try something simpler. Do you know about Pavlov? He could train a dog to salivate by ringing a bell. Because subconsciously, the dog associated the bell with food. That is how politicians control poor people as well. Dangle a “treat” in front of them and the buggers will vote for you.

I have never supported any Terrorist Action by anyone. I support the Palestinian ownership of their own Lands, Houses and Livestock. I support a Palestinian State. Now show me where I have expressed support for any of these men Deif, Nasrallah or Sinwar.
Israel has killed at least 46,000 Palestinians, 18,000 of them Children. How many of these 18,000 Children were Terrorists? They are also guilty of the Torture of Palestinian Hostages and have also taken videos of the brutal R*pe of men in Prison. Look at the condition of the 3 Women released by Hamas and those released by Israel.
There are also over 100,000 Gazans Injured.
Molly Malone is an Irish folk song about a beautiful young woman who sold fish on the Dublin Streets. She like her Father and Mother died of “the Fever” at a young age. You don’t like the Working Class do you Lester? You don’t like the Irish and probably look down on the Scots. Scot,
You say you support a Palestinian State, but don’t specify the mechanism. The mechanism thus far has been (violent) jihad. Your assumption that the Palestinians are waging a “freedom struggle” is false. They are waging a war of annihilation against the Jews. Besides the Hamas Charter, the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem met with Adolf Hitler in 1941. The Six Day War was the second attempt to expel/eliminate all the Jews from Palestine/present-day Israel.
“Israel has killed at least 46,000 Palestinians, 18,000 of them Children.”
Double standards or what? The Sunnis funded the total destruction of Syria and a genocidal war on Yemen. Hundreds of thousands of people (mostly Shia) died. At that time, no Sunni country went crying to the UN. But when Israel (Jews) face an existential threat from a terrorist outfit, and decide to fight back, suddenly everyone is running to the UN and ICC faster than Usain Bolt.

Don’t you know that Molly is a fictional character? As for the real female hawkers, peddle fish by day, yet they were doing a different business in the evening. As James Joyce might say, ” “All Moanday, Tearday, Wailsday, Thumpsday, Frightday, Shatterday.” Shunday = deal with lice.

Hello Lester,
How do you know what I assume? The act of one Country or Group committing War Crimes does NOT excuse the War Crimes of another Country.
You are like a schoolboy caught by the Headmaster cheating during an Exam exclaiming “Jimmy Thomson cheated at Cricket 3 weeks ago”.
Grow up Lester and admit that Israel is committing Genocide.
Have you looked at the scenes of Devastation from Gaza or are they like the Command and Control Centre claims by the IDF to be under Al Shifa Hospital, complete fabrications?

Hello Lester the Misogynist,
“As for the real female hawkers, peddle fish by day, yet they were doing a different business in the evening.”.
You can’t help yourself can you? For you any independent Woman must be a Prostitute.
In the words of Cindi Lauper this is the only part of her song that rings true for you, the rest doesn’t apply.

Can make you feel so small

Shining through”
So not just the Working Class, the Irish, Arabs, Scots but mainly 50% of the population; you hate women.

Don’t flip the script, Scot. People don’t meet Uncle Adolf for biscuits and tea. The only reason for the Mufti attending such a meeting was to discuss extermination of the Jews. And don’t claim you’re not anti-semitic because your relative slipped while climbing the Alps. That’s your usual rebuttal.
I see you are hitting the kasippu during the power cuts. Wearing a kilt and dancing with the Kandy Dandy’s? Good on you, remember to stay away from edges/high elevation.

Scot,
By cleverly conflating two issues that are, in fact, mutually exclusive, you are setting up a red herring.
The first issue, prostitution among Dublin fish peddlers:
“…there was a historical Molly, who lived in the 17th century. She is typically represented as a hawker by day and a part-time prostitute by night.[1] In contrast, she has also been portrayed as one of the few chaste female street hawkers of her day.”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molly_Malone
The second issue, no I am not a misogynist. Perhaps you are. When Old Rubbish was abusing Deepthi in foul language, you did not speak up. In fact, you goaded said individual to continue.
If you were an “intellectual” at a university, your employment would be immediately terminated for blatant dishonesty and an accessory to harassment. Liars are not allowed in the elite circle!

Please ignore such psychopaths. He might expect extra attention for being a lone wolf (himself said once he is unmarried, may be nobody likes him). I’ve said it x times.
Fortunately, we dont hear from Ruchirababa anymore. Lester or anyone like him will soon follow the same path.
.
Many good commentators (OC, HT, SJ, NV, MF and a few others) consider you a great man. Indeed your analytical thinking must be very important to the commentators, because you don’t take any sides but explain how you feel since you started your new life in Sri Lanka: above all, you and your family are dedicated to the poor. These are worth more to me than the so-called funds and incomes that Lester constantly talks about.
We are not on this forum to learn basic physics, maths or financial management from a refugee who is living his life in the UK by his own inclinations. The UK’s welfare funds are becoming a threat today with its economy in recession. To tell you the truth, I am learning a lot from your comments on your experiences. Tbd

LS,
As a self-proclaimed genius (super homo sapiens), Lester may have “mind-reading abilities”, which is why he always implies that they are smarter than others. I had an uncle in Los Angeles who died in 2007, who was always looking for extra attention. It was unique to him. My siblings did not like him at all. In behavior, he is very similar to our Satyaguru from Bandarawela (as an NPP promoter he no longer wants to appear on the CT forum). However, none of us among our father’s relatives liked him. Also, Lester’s real life may be something completely different. Therefore, I kindly advise you to focus on the content of the article rather than giving too much time to answer the “clown”.
/
Lester / January 28, 2025
Scot,
“Show me a quote where I have goaded anyone to use foul language.”
Show me where you requested him to cease or desist.
You must be aware that in developed countries, women are considered protected minorities. Harassing them is against them the law.
By the way, your “mechanism” for Palestinian Statehood is also a failure. If we assume “genocide” occurred in Gaza, then it was because the UN facilitated genocide. Specifically, the UNSC failed to pass a resolution requesting a ceasefire. So you are assuming that the entity that allowed genocide to occur will somehow grant Palestine statehood (meaning full membership in the UN). Do you also believe in ice cream castles in the sky?
Now some idiot (not Scot but his associates) will claim that I hold Israel responsible for genocide. No I don’t. There was no genocide in Gaza. However, Arab leaders should be put on trial for not offering Gazans at least temporary refugee status, similar to the EU and Ukranians.

The only group of people I truly dislike are funny men. You didn’t notice, but your companion here is also a funny man, based on numerous references to “shaft.” He’s also addicted to porno. Porno addicts will abuse random women in foul language, as your companion has done. It has to do with rage. The rage probably has to do with frustration (use your imagination here). Drugs/substance abuse may also factor in. Drug abuse will actually lower your cognitive abilities over time. The issue being that brain cells do not regenerate.

I don’t know if a sabbatical can fix the gaps in your logic. You support a “Palestinian State” but you claim not to support the primary proponents of that State. Or is it that like Dr. Jekyll, you are stuck in the muck and see no out? Or are you just a hypocrite who “talks the talk” but can’t “walk the walk” as the Yanks like to say? This is what happens when you collude with fascists.

Hello Leelagemalli,
Lester accused OC of not liking Intellectuals and by Implication that he (Lester) and Deepthi were Intellectuals. I have met people that I would consider Intellectuals. One of my Colleagues at Airbus was a Professor of Metallurgy and taught not only Metallurgy but also Corrosion Control to Undergraduates and Post Graduates at Qatar University and also held Seminars for Qatar Petroleum’s Engineers. We had offices next to one another in QSTP (Qatar Science & Technology Park) I remarked one time to him that Corrosion Potentials and their prevention confused me. In 30 minutes on the Whiteboard he explained that most of what I had been taught at University about Corrosion Prevention was wrong. The Practice was correct but the underlying Theories were wrong. After a few Graphs on the Board it all made sense. He was an Intellectual and just for Lester he was also an Iraqi. A very quiet and kindly man that unfortunately died of Cancer In New Zealand at his son’s home.

Hello LS,
No doubt, You will get to know it from your dearest wife. In srilanka, there is a common parlance ” the ant looks at his own urin drops as a big reservoir”. My granny used ot say it often. Hers remind me each time, whenever i am forced to read pompous comments being added by Deepthi and Lester. Likewise, a man (Lester or the like) who got started his universiity education in SRILANKA, but ended up for masters or any further education in UK and stayed back there, would feel it totally unique to him. Besides, in today’s critical situation in SL, some people would leave srilanka and live in Finnland forever, irrespective of unbearable coldness. In my case, I di dnot complete my Uni educaiton in SRILANKA but did it from the begining on in Germany and ended up in research, not because i sought greener pastures but they wanted us to be here. Who knows where i would end up in 5 years, maybe back to home country or africa where whole lot of my good colleagues come from. For my job life, I have been mingling with basic graduate to world renowned experts in Life sciences and medicine. Most of them are professors, but they are more clinically occupied rather than teaching at teaching medical colleges.

Africa is also in Turmoil. I spent a few years or so in West Africa. Nigeria was dangerous, Ghana much better, Ivory Coast Trashville (in Abidjan) dangerous, Senegal better and Morocco pretty safe.
Nowadays in North Africa the UAE is causing a lot of problems by supporting Militias etc. Russia still has its Mineral Exploitation by Wagner and others https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-68322230
So unless things calm down soon I would stay clear of most of Africa, however South Africa might be safer.

Research in natural sciences, medicine, engineering and many other fields has shown that what has been discovered so far is just a drop in the ocean and that there is much more to discover in every filed and every research focus. Master’s theses and doctoral theses have not been able to show even the slightest progress in many areas. Even though researchers in medicine and life sciences have discovered much more today than they did about 40 years ago and have revolutionized therapy options and methods, they are all, to some extent, only a part of it.

cont.
however it is no right to say that they are linked with COVID-19 vaccinations because in any case we cannot do control experiments with the same patient over “the same period of time”. Even identical twin research does not bring much to the desired result. I also see 1/3 or more of the populations, blindly religious elderly people in Europe (in Germany and Switzerland) who never want to get vaccinated but remain healthy (fit as a fiddle) in their late 80s, while some others with perfectly healthy medical histories died of COVID-19 even after being treated with strong anti-COVID-19 vaccines.
Long-term effects: A small subset of people have reported persistent symptoms (sometimes called “Long COVID” symptoms) even after vaccination. However, it is still unclear how or why this happens and more research is needed.
.
All in all, there is a large gap in some areas where medical applications are the focus of today’s medical research. Extensive research is needed to find out the causes in the near future.

Hello Leelagemalli,
One of my Sisters has “Long Covid”. Despite having had the full Course of Vaccines in the UK (AstraZeneca), she subsequently had 3 separate Infections of Covid 19. She had very low Platelet and RBC count and had to have an Emergency Transfusion, suffered from Blood Clots -Thrombosis with Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (TTS) and is on medication for this. All of these are known to be a rare side effect of the AstraZeneca Vaccine. It also seems to have damaged her Immune System, she catches Virus infections very easily and suffers badly with them. Her Blood Pressure and Pulse are also very high, again she is on Medication for this.
She has been a Vegetarian since her Teenage years (now nearly 70). Her Blood Group is A Positive. Some have suggested that these may be contributory Factors. However both of my Brothers caught an early strain of Covid and recovered quickly. I suspect I may have been infected (along with 3 or 4 of my Colleagues) in Qatar shortly after it arrived there but we thought it was Flu at the time. My other 2 Sisters have never contracted the Virus.

We must excuse this writer’s irresistible temptation to grandstand whenever he wants to make a point. The overarching objective is not debating a point but to demonstrate some superior knowledge that ordinary people may not be privy to. I believe AKD and the NPP have a sincere interest in developing the country, unlike all those opportunistic political parasites and their acolytes who preceded this government for decades earlier. I do not need to elaborate here, how corrupt and how unethical the previous regimes were. Yes, Ranil might have engaged in some positive economic management but overall, they were not a paradigm shift in philosophy. AKD is not a magician or miracle worker. He has to move his team carefully within the existing system while gradually introducing reforms that will take time. After all, the issue for most people is not whether they are in Ring-wing or Left-wing politics but whether the government will make Sri Lanka genuinely prosperous, so that the IMF loans, and the debt burden inherited from the parasites will slowly recede from the economic reckoning. In a society that is inherently corrupt, only genuine improvement in the economy can wean them away from stealing or bribery etc. It is the collective responsibility of the people to support the effort if they want a future generation to live in prosperity.

Hello SJ,
The Author Dr. Dayan Jayatilleka, wrote “The Left and Center-Left attempts to reduce dependence and to safeguard national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. The neoliberal Right doesn’t give a damn about these”.
From Wiki
“Neoliberalism is distinct from liberalism insofar as it does not advocate laissez-faire economic policy, but instead is highly constructivist and advocates a strong state to bring about market-like reforms in every aspect of society”.
I don’t think the Author understands Neoliberalism at all.
Here is another point of view “we can understand neoliberalism as a politico-economic doctrine that embraces robust liberal capitalism, constitutional democracy, and a modest welfare state” https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/neoliberalism/#Summ
Maybe the Dr is confusing Neoliberalism with the extreme right neocons?

I do have one problem relating to the continued dalliance of the NPP with the IMF. It does raise the issue whether it is in keeping with its manifesto and also whether a truly left party would follow IMF prescriptions. There is a promise to ensure that existing safety nets for the poor and the benefits provided are not dismantled. It is also true to say that IMF measures have uniformly resulted in hardship for the poor and resulted in an economy that benefits the rich and is embedded firmly in the network of the central economies of the West. NPP must demonstrate that it has taken precautions against the effects of IMF prescriptions.

I think they are acting on the assumption that their voters and non-voters in this country must be eating grass. The president seems not know the weight of what he is publicly challenging.
Despite the strong criticism of his rule, even Polonnaruwa Sirisena did not act like this abusive manner.
The credibility of the AKD as president is declining exponentially. Perhaps it is for the better, because as long as we are under such leadership, when we look back, the time wasted with them will be long.
.-
According to them, today they publicly deny everything they said during the election campaign. That means that even if they are criminals by publicly attacking others, they can deny that they did not do so. This is a really big threat if the people do not realize it in a timely manner. These rulers are the real “big liars” and scoundrels who don’t care about the truth and factual information about anything. They act like that from the top down. I believe that the people will rally and throw a “cocktail of unity” so that they can no longer hear the big lies.
The hatred of the people will grow fiercely in the coming days.

It does not matter one bit whether NPP is right or left as long as it delivers on its promises. As a Chinese President said, it does not matter whether the cat is black or white as long as it catches mice. All that the opposition has done so far has been to be vindictive and nit picking, raising issues of little significance to the people like whether Mahinda should live in a huge house or whether the Ministers have too many cars. Why drag the country into old style politics discussing such frivolous matters of little consequence? why not debate policies in Parliament? Is the opposition demonstrating that it does not have enough people to come up with criticisms of NPP policy decisions on a rational basis?
/
shankar / January 24, 2025
I think they should mould themselves as a centrist party. They should look at each issue seperately and see whther it has been dragged to the left of center or the right of center and then should drag it back to the middle ground. The middle path is the best as Lord bhuddha said and we can see the damage extremism has created in the world and ruminate on his wise words given 2500 years ago.

Hello Shankar,
In the United States the Democrats are considered on the left. Trump calls them “the enemy from within”. Bernie Sanders is probably the equivalent of Jeremy Corbyn in the UK and Bernie is considered to be on the far left of the Democrats. Keir Starmer the current Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party is in my opinion an anti-working class Tory and a Zionist to boot.
So the middle ground in the US and the UK have both been dragged to the right. Who decides what the “Middle Ground is nowadays?
Is the eradication of Poverty, the right to Education and Health not fundamental for all people no matter their politics? If 50 % of your population are poor, is that the middle ground?

i agree with you that defining the middle ground is very subjective indeed. For example your middle ground may not be mine but some might overlap. That’s where the the two f’s come in fairness and firmness. You have to administer the country fairly and firmly. Each issue should be looked at whther it is fair to the people affected by it.Also the national interest. When you find that it isn’t fair you should be firm and see that a fair solution is implemented even if their is some vociferous cries of some.

The National People’s Power led by the JVP is not new to their politics in the island. Today they have completely lost their identity. Shamefully, they continue to speak to the same audience to the very manner they did it before. They have already betrayed their soul before their party principles.
:
What we know about them for the past 5 decades or so is that they opposed any other party, regardless of whatever they brought forward for the common good of the nation. If it came from any previous government, they were strongly opposed. That “dawala pathrikawa” by RW in the early 90s was completely rejected by them.
The TRINCO-oil tank leasing was completely criticized by them and was completely opposed to it. If a refinery or any other projects were about to be built, the resistance came from the JVP people. That showed their tolerance towards many things. Their political ideology was to make this country a state akin to N korea, . Even China is opening up to the world today and that may be the reason why the JVP led National People’s Party is in complete agreement with everything that Mr. Wickremesinghe has continued to do with the IMF and India. And many other projects that they are introducing as if they have just discussed are Mr. Wickremesinghe’s.

We give credit that Dayan Jayatileke tries to define what he means by left and right. But asking Gamage to read Roberto Bobio’s old hat is ludicrous. For every such book, you can find a counter text. It is all opioniated ranting by political “scientists” – a misue of the word science.
When people come to power, they are confronted with the realties of the situation and the limits of their reach and change. that is GOOD. Prior to the election, many business people joined the NPP and spoke rejecting leftist idology. So, the change was anticpated. I feared that the NPP will behave like bllod-thirsty Bolshevicks, but they are beahing like rational business people.
Lee Kewn Yew was a fire-brand leftist before he came to power. Soon in power he shed his ideological approach and became a pragmatist.
What seems to matter to Dayan J is whether the NPP is left or right. DJ fails to ask, have any “leftist” goverments succeeded in improving the people’s living conditond and the national GDP?
In China it happened only when Den Xio Ping gave up being left and turned right (i.e., market economics).
In India it happened only when ManMohanSingh gave up Indira’s leftist politics and turned to Markets.
In Russia it happened only when Gorbachov and Yeltsin threw out Marxist ideology and turned to Markets.

The terms (1) Center (2) center left (3) center right are all relative terms. It depends on the country. In Canada out of the 3 major parties, the Liberal, the Conservative and the New Democratic Party (NDP, the last is considered a centre-left party. Trade Unions tend to support the NDP over the other two parties. But in practice, workers support all three parties.
To me, JVP is not a leftist party and its tumultuous history proves it. The JVP has been following a policy of ultra-Sinhala-Buddhist majoritarianism not different from the right-wing parties like the UNP/SLFP. It has opposed any devolution of power to the minority Tamils. They opposed the 13A, the Provincial Council system, P-TOMS, the merger of Northeast etc.
The JVP wears red shirts and carries Marx, Angels, and Lenin photographs in their May Day parade, but in practice, it has little to do with those renowned leaders.
For example, on the question of how national minorities should be treated under a communist state Lenin repeatedly explained that the Marxist programme on the national question is essentially a negative one: against national oppression, against the suppression of national culture, etc.
Following on from Marx, Lenin took up the national question as a means of arming the revolutionary social democracy in Russia and uniting the oppressed nationalities under the banner of the working class
