There is much speculation amongst the public, who voted in droves, to change the ugly and downward spiralling political dynasty of former numero uno Mahinda Rajapaksa as to the delay in bringing the plunderers to Court. The longer it takes to do so, the greater is the chance of obfuscating the issue with patriotism or some such nonsense.

Here are some of the theories that abound. President Maithripala Sirisena is being pilloried by the SLFP MP’s who want him to run for President the next time. Their fortunes lay in forming an SLFP led government on the back of a Maithripala victory at the next Presidential elections.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe wishes to be the President himself and therefore will not want the Presidency abolished. For the incumbent Prime Minister to be President he would want the SLFP divided. To keep the SLFP divided the Rajapaksa’s have to be free and politicking.
If this is the simple logic Sri Lanka has no chance in hell of ever giving her people a better and brighter future. It tantamount to treason. 6.2 millions of people voted on the facts presented to them at the last Presidential and Parliamentary elections.
The civil society that rallied around the call for Good Governance must be relentless in holding on to what was promised.
The Attorney General’s Department is under fire. So is the FCID and the CID. Purely due to the delay in bringing the murderers and plunderers to book. Many a reason is thrust upon a gullible public given a penchant for amnesiac behaviour.
Consider two such open and shut cases. That loud mouthed Wimal Weerawansa and his wife were accused of altering their dates of birth in obtaining two passports.The news media was awash with these allegations sometime ago. What is the fate of these two cases?
To us laymen it’s a simple investigation. Obtain the two Passport applications. Ascertain the hand writing and signatures. Confiscate the two Passports in question. Check if they have been used. Record their statements. File action for tendering as genuine a forged document. End of case. Even such a simple investigation has not been concluded.
It is no small wonder that people, who are sovereign or supposed to be so in this thrice blessed land are agitated. It is no small wonder that the AG’s Department and the varying arms of the Police are under fire. It is no small wonder that there is suspicion that someone or more are vacillating. Who? Is it President Sirisena or Premier Wickremesinghe? It has to be one of the two or both. No one else will gain by this.
We challenge the civil society to push the Government to conclude the Wimal Weerawansa and wife’s cases. Ravi Karunanayake had to step down as the heat got intense in the kitchen. Stoke the embers to finish these simple cases. Civil Society, Media….where art thou?

Unfortunately the public are in the dark as to what is going on, especially the internal workings. Can the famous RTI be used on the Attorney General’s Department, CID, FCID etc. to find out what is going on and if so will the civil society too take some action to lay bare the facts? What has now happened is that the allegations against the past lot stands merely as allegations with an occasional remand but with the present lot its image severly tarnished with the resignation of a Minister as starters, which is bad for a lot that promised good governance.

To issue a passport the immigration department requires one to submit Originals of birth certificate and National identity card with the application and both documents confirms ones date of birth.
Then, if forged documents are submitted the officers at the immigration are quite capable of detecting them.
So far,no such allegation has been made or such fraudulent documents have been found.
Then to be proven a fraud an intent and/or a benefit to be acquired from such a fraud must be found.
Without any motive and/or a benefit it would only qualify as mistake.
A mistake could well be on the part of the Dept: Immigration when entering data.
This is all political mudslinging and not much else.

Before going after Wimal, how about Namal? Namal has threatened an FCID officer who handles his files, stating that he is awaiting for their government, apparently to take revenge. Well, well, this is a sheer attempt to intimidate the police officer. If they act like this even without power, what will happen if they come back to power? There will definitely be bloodbath, post-election violence, disappearances and torture something that many people have never seen in their life time. I think if the President has no intention to contest, he should make sure that the country will never go back to a Rajapaksa after him. Both sons of Gamini Dissanyake never did a day of work for a living but lived on their father’s stolen wealth. Lucky – True. Anyway, we are not typical gullible voters Sri Lankan politicians used to have. Those who emerged after January 2015 are different type of voters. The general public did not disengage from politics as they normally do once a government is formed. We don’t let politicians to get away with pushing people’s needs to the bottom. Both the government and the opposition have disappointed their respective voters.
Sri Lankan politicians seem to think that politics is all about supply and demand. That means if people don’t demand they don’t find solutions to issues faced by the general public. That is ridiculous.
At the next major election, people need to elect MPP who would represent them better, rather than going by usual party politics.
In brief, what I am saying is masses are not ready to be in the Menu anymore but they demand a place at the Table too. Politicians of both sides should be ready to face consequences of their actions as for majority of them, this Parliament could be their last.

The subject question has elicited quite a number of helpful responses that have covered the many transgressions of our Wimal over the years. However, we never had a full explanation of the part that he played in the events of 1987 to 1989. After all several lives, including many innocent ones, were lost during those years. In the end, our ‘hero’ came out smelling of roses, and reinvented himself as saviour of the people. The underlying traits of the man are there for all to see – and we have over the years – lying, cheating, misappropriation, sexual misbehaviour, political grandstanding, and more. This is the template for his character. This is the man that offers to ‘fight for the common man’. The common man must be desperate; surely we can offer them a better choice.
Of all our current politicians, he is one of the least qualified for public office. Decent political leaders (and their parties) should keep him and his party beyond arms length. Deny him political influence. However his political ‘godfathers’ indulge him for their own purposes. This way he lives to pollute our politics. We managed to get rid of the execrable Mervyn; the time is overdue for Wimal to be encouraged to seek alternative employment. Clean the stables – one by one!

I did notice this only now. About Wimal’s wife’s passport case. I should have added few more lines. Sometimes the 300 word restriction makes me cut off a good chunk from my comments.
About passports & DOB matter: I don’t know the case in depth, but if I go by newspaper reports like everyone else, this is what I see.
a). A good lawyer can take her out of this self-made mess. It is evident that she did not have any criminal intent when she made these changes (provided that she had done the alterations). And there is no reason to see it as a fraud either.
b). For an example: If there is an age limit to apply for a post and if she had done this in order to be qualified for that position, then it is a fraud. There is no evidence here to prove such a thing. There is no loss to the government either. This is neither a criminal offence nor a fraud. This is something, I don’t have a one word, this is just a foolish thing sometimes people do without knowing its consequences. My apologies again, this applies only if she had done what is reported.
c). On the other hand, what the Court will gain by imposing any punishment to a mother of two children for a random case like this? Wimal and kids will suffer. Even the police, I don’t think, have any intention to make two kids devastated due to a case which can easily be seen in a humanitarian and sympathetic angle considering the agony and trauma these children have already gone through.
d). There is a phrase like this in law: “actus reus non facit reum nisi mens sit rea”.
