{"id":108606,"date":"2013-10-03T19:48:12","date_gmt":"2013-10-03T14:18:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=108606"},"modified":"2013-10-08T23:14:11","modified_gmt":"2013-10-08T17:44:11","slug":"gambia-quits-the-commonwealth-over-disagreements-about-human-rights-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/gambia-quits-the-commonwealth-over-disagreements-about-human-rights-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"Gambia Quits The Commonwealth Over Disagreements About Human Rights Issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Gambia has left the Commonwealth of Nations with immediate effect slamming the organisation as \u2018neo-colonial\u2019 and extending colonialism apparently after a battle with the organisation over greater protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_108607\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/gambia-quits-the-commonwealth-over-disagreements-about-human-rights-issues\/gambia\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-108607\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-108607\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-108607\" title=\"Gambia\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Gambia--300x187.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Gambia--300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/Gambia-.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-108607\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">President Yahya Jammeh |Photo: Reuters<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;(The) government has withdrawn its membership of the British Commonwealth and decided that the Gambia will never be a member of any neo-colonial institution and will never be a party to any institution that represents an extension of colonialism,&#8221; the Gambian Government said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>No clear reason was given for Gambia to quit the Commonwealth but it is believed the decision came after the Government there rejected a proposal by the Commonwealth last year to create a commission to protect human rights.<\/p>\n<p>Membership in the 54 member Commonwealth is voluntary.<\/p>\n<p>The Commonwealth proposal followed an April 2012 visit to the Gambia by Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma, during which he met with President Yahya Jammeh and other top government officials.<\/p>\n<p>Jammeh is regularly accused of rights abuses and has ruled since 1994. His Administration is under intense pressure to address widespread human rights abuses and undertake reform.<\/p>\n<p>Commonwealth Secretary-General Kamalesh Sharma has seen with dismay and disappointment, media coverage on the reported announcement by the Government of The Gambia of its withdrawal from the Commonwealth, a statement from the organisation&#8217;s spokesman Richard Uku said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are in touch with the Gambian authorities to follow up on the media reports in order to establish the facts clearly.
