We, Renuka Bandaranayake and Kapila Karunaratna , are the sister and brother in law, respectively of the\u00a043rd Chief Justice<\/a><\/span>\u00a0of the Republic of Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n

Since the afternoon of Sunday the 3rd of November, Kapila and I have been receiving information that a rumour is being spread that we have received a discount of 20% for the Trillium apartment we purchased in 2011 in Colombo. It was informed to us that this rumour was based on the comments made by a visiting dignitary at a public forum in Perth, Western Australia.<\/p>\n

The said discount is not true. In fact and in truth we did not get any special concession for this purchase. To address that we would like to give the following details regarding our purchase:<\/p>\n

We purchased the apartment in April 2011 paying Rs. 26,125,000\/\u2010 . This was listed for Rs 27,500,000\/\u2010 and we were told that the sale price was Rs 26,125,000\/\u2010, which amounts to a reduction of 5% (which is,Rs 1, 375,000\/\u2010 ) from the listed price. This money was paid in instalments as per the agreement. We have been doing some research on the sales prices of the other apartments that were sold during April and May 2011 and have come to know that, most of the sale prices were 3 %to 8% less than the listed price. In other words a reduction of 3% to 8% from the listed price had been offered to those who purchased during the said period. This confirms that our purchase price was within the range of all the other sales. Furthermore, the Watawala Committee, which was in charge of these apartments, had given permission for the sale of these apartments including our apartment, with a 5% discount from the quoted listed price.<\/p>\n

It should also be mentioned that we also paid an additional amount of Rs. 371,500 \/\u2010 for this apartment. At the time the initial discussions took place, we were told that our apartment would be ready by December 2011. The said date was later changed to February 2012. However construction took a longer period and we received the unit only in July 2012. Our sales contract said that we will be compensated for the delayed construction. This was never discussed and we were never paid. As we bought this apartment to be used in our twilight years , it was an investment by us and therefore we lost 6 months of opportunity cost. This basically means that we didn’t receive any reduction from the listed price.<\/p>\n

Our preference was to keep silent, since we fervently believed that silence is golden. However, continuing insults and harassments to our family had forced us to break our silence. These false rumours have caused lot of pain and sorrow for all of us.<\/p>\n

Our sister was unjustly impeached almost a year ago, a fact which the two Commonwealth reports by\u00a0Justice Langa<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Sir Jowell<\/a>, clearly state to be unconstitutional and moreover unconscionable. Now, to add further insult to injury, false information has been spread about our purchase in Colombo. Is this justifiable?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
