UK\u2019s Labour Party<\/span><\/a> claims 2014 could be a crucial year for accountability and reconciliation in Sri Lanka given the growing calls for an independent international war crimes inquiry.<\/p>\n

Speaking after a meeting with representatives from Tamil lobby groups, Labour Parliamentarian and The shadow foreign secretary\u00a0Douglas Alexander<\/a> said British Prime Minister David Cameron had left Colombo with no improvements in Human Rights secured.<\/p>\n

Meeting attendees: Varadar Varadakumar – Tamil Information Centre, Suren Surendiran \u2013 Global Tamil Forum , Sen Kandiah – Tamils for Labour , Janani Jananayakam \u2013 Tamils Against Genocide, Raj Vakesan – British Tamils Forum, Dr Rajah \u2013 Chairman of Hindu Temples, Nathan Kumar \u2013 Tamils for Labour, Krish Ratnasingham \u2013 Tamil National Alliance UK , Sutharshan Sukumaran \u2013 Tamil Youth, Francis Mariyathas \u2013 Tamils for Labour<\/p><\/div>\n

\u201cAlong with the Tamil community here in the UK, Labour will not let the matter rest,\u201d Alexander said.<\/p>\n

\u201cLabour is today urging the Prime Minister<\/span><\/a> to immediately join our call for an international led inquiry into human rights and cut short the deadline of March 2014 that he has granted to President Rajapaksa,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Alexander said it had been a useful and productive meeting with Tamil community leaders. \u201cOur discussions allowed me to thank them for all they have done to raise the issue of human rights in Sri Lanka here in the UK. They made clear their commitment to work together on this important issue in the months and years ahead,\u201d the Labour MP said.<\/p>\n

\u201c2013 has been a significant year for Sri Lanka and the Tamil people. But 2014 could be a crucial year for accountability and reconciliation in Sri Lanka, given the growing calls for an independent, international war crimes inquiry to be established,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cWorking with the Tamil community here in the UK, Labour will continue to highlight these issues and urge action from the Government of Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n
