A peaceful demonstration was held at Trincomalee in close proximity to the\u00a0 main Bus Stand around 11.00 A.M. on 10th<\/sup>\u00a0December 2013, which is the Human Rights Day proclaimed by the United Nations, says the TNP leader R. Sampanthan and Member of Parliament for Trincomalee.<\/p>\n

\"Sampanthan,<\/a>Writing to the President, he said; “The demonstration was conducted by parents, spouses and near relatives of missing persons to draw attention to the grave violation of their Human Rights on Human Rights Day, and to seek redress to their current plight .\u00a0 Civil Society and democratically elected representatives\u00a0 of the people also participated\u00a0 in the demonstration.\u00a0 The demonstration was perfectly peaceful and those participating in the demonstration carried posters demanding justice.\u00a0 I am informed that some Police personnel were present\u00a0 at the scene.”<\/p>\n

ATTACK\u00a0 ON\u00a0 PEACEFUL\u00a0 PROTESTORS\u00a0 ON 10th<\/sup>.DECEMBER 2013 ,<\/b><\/p>\n

HUMAN\u00a0 RIGHTS\u00a0 DAY\u00a0 AT\u00a0 TRINCOMALEE.<\/b><\/p>\n

A\u00a0 peaceful demonstration was held at\u00a0 Trincomalee in close proximity to the\u00a0 main Bus Stand around \u00a0 11.00 A.M. on 10th<\/sup>\u00a0December 2013, which is the Human Rights Day proclaimed by the United Nations.<\/p>\n

The demonstration was conducted by parents, spouses and near relatives of missing persons to draw attention to the grave violation of their Human Rights on Human Rights Day, and to seek redress to their current plight .\u00a0 Civil Society and democratically elected representatives\u00a0 of the people also participated\u00a0 in the demonstration.\u00a0 The demonstration was perfectly peaceful and those participating in the demonstration carried posters demanding justice.\u00a0 I am informed that some Police personnel were present\u00a0 at the scene.<\/p>\n

Some time after the demonstration commenced, some persons, a few of whom had concealed their faces with cloth, set upon the demonstrators and assaulted them with hands.\u00a0 The posters which the demonstrators were carrying were also plucked and damaged.\u00a0 The demonstrators were warned that they should not carry out protests against the Government.\u00a0 Some of the demonstrators were injured.<\/p>\n

Such an attack on peaceful protestors in not merely highhanded; it is also indicative of a fascist approach, and constitutes a very grave violation of the Human Rights of their people on Human Rights Day.\u00a0 It is also indicative of the total breakdown of the Rule of Law.<\/p>\n

I consider it my duty to bring this to your notice in the expectation that appropriate action would be taken.<\/p>\n
