{"id":117566,"date":"2013-12-29T01:21:50","date_gmt":"2013-12-28T19:51:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=117566"},"modified":"2014-01-10T13:35:38","modified_gmt":"2014-01-10T08:05:38","slug":"gota-becomes-dog-abductor-inside-story-of-the-cruel-massacre-of-dogs-in-sri-lanka","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/gota-becomes-dog-abductor-inside-story-of-the-cruel-massacre-of-dogs-in-sri-lanka\/","title":{"rendered":"Gota Becomes Dog Abductor: Inside Story Of The Cruel Massacre Of Dogs In Sri Lanka"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Several months prior to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) was held in November 2013 in Colombo, a massive operation to make the city of Colombo look clean and attractive for the event, was implemented by the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4992\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/gotabhaya-rajapaksa-colombo-telegraph.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4992\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4992\" alt=\"Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/gotabhaya-rajapaksa-colombo-telegraph-300x173.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/gotabhaya-rajapaksa-colombo-telegraph-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/gotabhaya-rajapaksa-colombo-telegraph.jpg 610w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4992\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Part of this operation was to remove nearly 300 homeless dogs from the streets, and house them in temporary shelters.\u00a0 The organisation for Animal Rights and Welfare \u2018Ahinsa Sri Lanka\u2019 was told by the Colombo Municipality, that the dogs will be released in the areas they were taken from, soon after CHOGM ended.<\/p>\n<p>This assurance was made public, through newspapers and websites prior to CHOGM. But at the latest news conference held in this regard, Animal Rights Activist and the\u00a0Chairperson of the Animal Welfare Trust Iranganie de Silva,( wife of Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva) disclosed, that these dogs numbering 280, had been taken in vehicles belonging to the Armed Forces to Halavatha. &#8221; we can assume that the dogs were killed as they have disappeared from the Dematagoda slaughterhouse without any trace and there was no transparency on the part of the CMC on what they did to the dogs&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Iranganie De Silva claims that despite a Presidential order banning the killing of street dogs, the Colombo Municipality had totally disregarded it. \u00a0Therefore, the killing of these innocent animals is totally illegal, she states.<\/p>\n<p>Though the Colombo Municipal Commissioner Badrani Jayawardena promised \u2018Ahinsa Sri Lanka\u2019 to protect these dogs from any harm and to release them after CHOGM concludd, de Silva claims that they were hoodwinked and lied to.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Dog-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-117596 alignleft\" alt=\"Dog 3\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Dog-3.jpg\" width=\"287\" height=\"206\" \/><\/a>Until the conclusion of CHOGM, these dogs were kept at the Dematagoda Slaughter House.<\/p>\n<p>When Animal Rights Activist Sagarika Rajakarunanayake , President of \u2018Sathva Mithra\u2019 and Iranganie de Silva visited the Dematagoda Slaughter House to check on the welfare of the dogs being kept there, they found that the dogs had no food nor water. Further, the dogs were packed into confined spaces, cramped on top of each other.<\/p>\n<p>When the owners of some of these dogs came to claim their pets, some of the workers and officers at the Slaughterhouse had demanded bribes.<\/p>\n<p>When the Police was called to the scene, the Municipal Commissioner had claimed that arrangements had been made to take the dogs to Anuradhapura and release them there. It was assumed that the dogs would most probably be taken to the canine sanctuary maintained by the Anuraddhapura Municipality in Mihintale.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Dog-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-117572\" alt=\"Dog 4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Dog-4.jpg\" width=\"320\" height=\"162\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Dog-4.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Dog-4-300x151.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a>But upon checking with the Anuradhapura Municipality, it was found that no such arrangements had been made with them.<\/p>\n<p>Animal Rights activists then demanded that the dogs be released in the areas they had been taken from and were familiar with. The Municipal Commissioner had promised to do so.<\/p>\n<p>However what has happened today is something totally different, cruel and inhuman, says Iranganie de Silva.
