The UN Human Rights Council today adopted the resolution<\/span><\/a> that mandates an international inquiry into allegations of major human rights violations in Sri Lanka during the last seven years of the war\u00a0with 23 countries voting in\u00a0favour\u00a0of the document in the 47-nation strong body.\u00a0While 12 countries including Pakistan, Maldives,\u00a0Cuba,Venezuela,\u00a0China, Russia voted against, 12 member-states abstained from voting, including India, Indonesia and Japan.<\/p>\n

There were two votes on paragraph 10 (International Inquiry mechanism) and on the whole resolution.<\/p>\n

Pakistan’s proposal on abolition of the paragraph 10 in the resolution was rejected by 23 countries voting in favour of rejection of Pakistan’s proposal, while 14 countries voted in favour and 12 countries abstained from voting.<\/p>\n

41 co sponsors have signed on to the US led resolution on Sri Lanka to promote human rights, reconciliation and accountability, including Albania,* Austria, Belgium,* Bulgaria,* Canada,* Croatia,* Cyprus,* Denmark,* Estonia, Finland,* France, Georgia,* Germany, Greece,* Hungary,* Iceland,* Ireland, Italy, Latvia,* Liechtenstein,* Lithuania,* Luxembourg,* Mauritius,* Montenegro, Netherlands,* Norway,* Poland,* Portugal,* Romania, Saint Kitts and Nevis,* Sierra Leone, Slovakia,* Spain,* Sweden,* Switzerland,* the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United States of America (* Non-member states of the UNHRC).<\/p>\n

The resolution seeks to set up an international probe into alleged war crimes committed by both sides during the last seven years of the war.<\/p>\n
