{"id":123850,"date":"2014-04-29T18:55:30","date_gmt":"2014-04-29T13:25:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=123850"},"modified":"2014-05-13T17:35:08","modified_gmt":"2014-05-13T12:05:08","slug":"basils-man-tipped-to-be-judge-of-supreme-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/basils-man-tipped-to-be-judge-of-supreme-court\/","title":{"rendered":"Basil\u2019s Man Tipped To Be Judge Of Supreme Court"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reports of the next appointment to one of the vacancies in the country\u2019s apex court \u2013 the Supreme Court has sent shockwaves within the Sri Lankan legal and judicial circles with a close ally of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Basil+Rajapaksa&amp;x=8&amp;y=6\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Basil Rajapaksa<\/span><\/a>, \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Priyantha+Jayawardena&amp;x=10&amp;y=6\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Priyantha Jayawardena<\/span><\/a> PC \u00a0being nominated as a Supreme Court judge.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/105.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-110943\" alt=\"Mahinda, Mohan and Basil\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/105-300x273.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/105-300x273.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/105.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>His appointment has reportedly been submitted for approval to the Parliamentary Council with the Council expected to approve the nomination.<\/p>\n<p>Priyantha Jayawardena PC who started his legal career as an officer at the Attorney-General reverted to the private bar a few years later. He came into prominence mainly for his connection to Minister Basil Rajapaksa. He was widely seen as playing a central role in the impeachment of Chief Justice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Shirani+Bandaranayake&amp;x=13&amp;y=8\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Shirani Banadaranayake<\/span><\/a>, and according to close sources his legal acumen\u00a0 was amply demonstrated in the flawed charge sheet issued during the impeachment process and several defects in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Divineguma+Bill&amp;x=9&amp;y=4\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Divi Neguma Bill<\/span><\/a> which he is reported to have drafted.<\/p>\n<p>Jayawardena was also a beneficiary of the mass elevation of the President\u2019s Counsel recently. Colombo Telegraph also learns that Jayawardena was involved in many \u201cdeals\u201d as he is\u00a0 also a close associate of business tycoon Harry Jayawardena.
