It is evident from all accounts that the ethno-religious riot in Beruwala and Aluthgama<\/span><\/a> has left a terrible toll. A toll of physical destruction, injured bodies and minds and death.<\/p>\n

In the absence of worthwhile media coverage owing to a state blackout, our citizen\u2019s group deemed it necessary to see for ourselves.\u00a0 A visit to Beruwala and its precincts was just concluded. There was much to see in Beruwala even though the attacks were on a much lesser scale than Aluthgama. Time was too short to visit Aluthgama..<\/p>\n

The town and villages in Beruwela were deserted. Shops were closed and there was an eerie feeling of violence. Men were huddling in street corners chatting quietly and watching furtively to see if violence would breakout again. There was no visible protection around .Muslim villages. However there were plenty of Police, STF and Army on the main Galle Road and on the periphery of Sinhala areas.<\/p>\n

Facts that may not be obvious to the public at large:<\/b><\/p>\n

The complaint regarding the altercation between the three Muslim youth and the Buddhist priest and his Sinhalese driver was not accepted by the Police till late evening on Poson Poya Day. The incident occurred in the morning. Why was this? An ethnic twist resulted in a very common type of complaint not being accepted by the Police. There was annoyance about this. The Bodu Bala Sena made full use of this situation by whipping up hatred 3 days later.<\/p>\n

Attacks continued on Muslim shops and homes while THE CURFEW WAS ON. So mobs on the rampage were allowed to do so either through inaction or active collusion. There is video evidence to show both. However Muslims were told to stay indoors.<\/p>\n

Currently there are 1056 persons in an unofficial IDP camp in a school in Beruwala. These are people who fled attacks to their homes. Some homes were raized to the ground. As the government does not want to acknowledge an environment of displacement, no officer has visited this site and offered assistance. There is also no medical assistance at the camp nor special care for women and children.<\/p>\n

As usual there is jealousy of success in entrepreneurship among Muslims.and the attacks seem planned. Planning of the attack is obvious as all the youth of the mob wore cut off jeans and had the identical pole in each of their hands.<\/p>\n

The death toll among the attacked Muslims\u00a0 is 5 as of now… No Sinhalese was injured seriously.<\/p>\n

Protection of the chosen few<\/b><\/p>\n

It is pretty obvious that some are more equal in Sri Lanka than others. The state protects the Bodu Bala Sena for a start. How does the Senawa move about? In Defenders. How much is a Defender?<\/p>\n

How come Galagodaththe Gnanasara<\/a>, the thug voice of the BBS<\/span><\/a>, has not been arrested? There is so much evidence against him. He is seen plainly in all media.<\/p>\n

How come the Muslims of these areas are not protected? They are vulnerable. Attacks went on while the Police and other Forces watched. Obviously they have been given instructions not to act.<\/p>\n

Let us be ready to say that ethnic cleansing in Sri Lanka is on its way. First Dambulla, then Badulla, then Kuragala, then Kurunegala, now Devanagala, Grandpass and Beruwala. Attacks are being planned by BBS systematically in pockets where Muslims live. There is also now a threat on Maligawatte. A Sinhalese Sri Lanka is being fashioned.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
