The Colombo Telegraph found the cable from WikiLeaks database. The cable written on February 24, 2010 and classified as \u201cCONFIDENTIAL\u201d by the Deputy Chief of Mission Valerie Fowler.<\/p>\n<p>The US Ambassador to Colombo Patricia A. Butenis wrote \u201cFonseka\u2019s case drew great attention. The courtroom was packed, and his wife was met by swarms of media upon her exit from the courthouse. The denial of relief was not surprising, but the improvements in access to Fonseka, if actually granted, are important steps. END SUMMARY.\r\n\r\nRELIEF DENIED\r\n-------------\r\n\r\n<a id=\"par2\" href=\"http:\/\/wikileaks.org\/cable\/2010\/02\/10COLOMBO132.html#par2\">\u00b6<\/a>2. (SBU) On February 23, the Sri Lankan Supreme Court denied\r\nformer presidential candidate General Fonseka's petition for\r\nrelease as interim relief in his fundamental rights case\r\nchallenging the legality of his detention.  The court ruled\r\nthat because the basis of the submission for interim relief\r\nwas \"linked\" to the final relief requested, the court was\r\n\"not in a position\" to grant the interim relief.  (NOTE: The\r\ncourt was presided over by Acting Chief Justice Shirani\r\nBandaranyake, considered a Rajapaksa loyalist.  Several days\r\nago, the president made a show of appointing her in place of\r\nChief Justice Asoka de Silva, who was thought to be more\r\nsympathetic to the case but is traveling abroad.
