{"id":129462,"date":"2014-08-27T01:18:21","date_gmt":"2014-08-26T19:48:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=129462"},"modified":"2014-09-09T00:02:43","modified_gmt":"2014-09-08T18:32:43","slug":"govt-should-realise-human-rights-norms-dont-depend-on-personalities-alone-lawyers-collective","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/govt-should-realise-human-rights-norms-dont-depend-on-personalities-alone-lawyers-collective\/","title":{"rendered":"Govt Should Realise Human Rights Norms Don\u2019t Depend On Personalities Alone: Lawyers Collective"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A group of senior legal practitioners have advised the government to be realistic of in their expectations in hoping for a change in the decision making process of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) concerning Sri Lanka, following the retirement of outgoing UN Human Rights Chief <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Navi+Pillay&amp;x=10&amp;y=7\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Navi Pillay<\/span><\/a> on August 31.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_103034\" style=\"width: 378px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Navi-p.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-103034\" class=\"size-full wp-image-103034\" alt=\"Outgoing UN Human Rights Chief Navi Pillay\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Navi-p.jpg\" width=\"368\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Navi-p.jpg 368w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/Navi-p-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-103034\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Outgoing UN Human Rights Chief Navi Pillay<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Lawyers Collective in a statement today have pointed out that although international decision making and norms do not depend on personalities alone, the Rajapaksa-regime unfortunately is expecting Pillay\u2019s successor &#8211; Prince Zeid Ra\u2019ad Zeid Al-Hussein to bend human rights norms.<\/p>\n<p>Criticising this mindset of the government, the Lawyer\u2019s Collective has pointed out that its time the government realises that international decision making is not heavily reliant on personalities while adding it is a grave mistake to perceive international decision making processes in the same light as that of the local political sphere.<\/p>\n<p>In the joint statement issued by the Lawyers\u2019 Collective co-conveners- Lal Wijenayake,\u00a0Chandrapala Kumarage and JC Weliamuna, they have commended Pillay furthermore, describing her as an individual who was \u2018in the forefront in protecting and promoting human rights norms\u2019 and as a personality who discharged her functions as the UN HR Chief free of any fear or favour.<\/p>\n<p>The legal practitioners meanwhile recalling Pillay\u2019s visit to Sri Lanka and her concluding remarks have noted that they made an enormous impact on the human rights community globally.<\/p>\n<p>They have pointed out that its extremely praiseworthy, the manner in which she maintained objectivity and professionalism in assessing the human rights situation in Sri Lanka and accurately identifying the authoritarian tendencies as well as concerning how terrorism has affected the Sri Lankan human rights situation, despite the Rajapaksa-regime and its supporters ridiculing her and the various other challenges she had to face.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the Lawyers Collective has noted that they hope Pillay\u2019s successor will follow her footsteps.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":22,"featured_media":103034,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,1,6969,2375],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-129462","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-colombotelegraph","category-news","category-popular-stories","category-stories"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.3 -
