Chandana Keerthi Bandara<\/span><\/a>, a senior producer of the BBC World Service’s Sinhala section has been sacked on charges of harassment and bullying,\u00a0Colombo Telegraph reliably learns.<\/span><\/p>\n

The BBC World Service spokesman,\u00a0Paul Rasmussen<\/a><\/span>\u00a0refused to give further details, but did not deny the story.<\/p>\n

According to inside sources,\u00a0Chandana Keerthi Bandara\u00a0has\u00a0been sacked a few days ago by the BBC, after four controversial recruits made official complaints against him.\u00a0Its suspended<\/span><\/a> editor Priyath Liyanage<\/a><\/span>, staff members Saroj\u00a0Pathirana and\u00a0Thisara Aravinda Rathuwithana<\/a><\/span> from Sinhala Service “Sandeshaya” and Jeyapragash\u00a0Nallusamy from\u00a0Tamil Service had made the complaints against Bandara.<\/p>\n

Colombo Telegraph has been unable to reach Chandana Keerthi Bandara for comment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Early this year the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called for a new approach<\/span><\/a> towards bullying and harassment at the BBC.\u00a0<\/span>Addressed to director general of the BBC Tony Hall a motion backed by union members at the BBC follows an investigation into harassment and bullying.\u00a0Dinah Rose QC was brought in to lead the investigation and make recommendations, which she published in a report in May.<\/p>\n

Following Colombo Telegraph\u2019s exposure of the issue of applying Sri Lanka government’s\u00a0<\/span>interest<\/span>\u00a0free loans, the BBC had to discipline<\/a><\/span> Chandana Keerthi Bandara, Priyath Liyanage \u00a0and\u00a0Elmo Fernando<\/a><\/span>\u00a0by compelling all three of them to undergo a training program on journalistic ethics.<\/span><\/p>\n
