{"id":131159,"date":"2014-10-02T15:27:17","date_gmt":"2014-10-02T09:57:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=131159"},"modified":"2014-10-02T15:27:17","modified_gmt":"2014-10-02T09:57:17","slug":"attack-on-journalist-well-planned-lawyers-collective","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/attack-on-journalist-well-planned-lawyers-collective\/","title":{"rendered":"Attack On Journalist Well Planned: Lawyers Collective"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Senior legal professionals have condemned the attack on journalist Chandana Kuruppuarachchi that occurred a few days ago while expressing their regret over the law being made redundant with concern to prosecuting his attackers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_100752\" style=\"width: 167px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/lal-wijenayaka-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-100752\" class=\"size-full wp-image-100752\" alt=\"Lal Wijenayake - Chairman,Standing Committee on Rule of Law of the Bar Association\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/lal-wijenayaka-2.jpg\" width=\"157\" height=\"196\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-100752\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lal Wijenayake &#8211; Chairman,Standing Committee on Rule of Law of the Bar Association<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Lawyers+Collective&amp;x=9&amp;y=5\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Lawyers Collective<\/span><\/a> issuing a statement have pointed out the attack on Kuruppuarachchi a few days ago in Haliela has occurred within a matter of days after threats were leveled at members of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Upul+Jayasuriya&amp;x=9&amp;y=5\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Upul Jayasuriya<\/span><\/a> and other human rights activists including lawyers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Manjula+Pathiraja&amp;x=9&amp;y=3\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Manjula Pathiraja<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Namal+Rajapakshe&amp;x=8&amp;y=3\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Namal Rajapakhsa<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Senior lawyers Lal Wijenayake, Chandrapala Kumarage, and JC Weliamuna issuing the statement on behalf of the Lawyers Collective have pointed out that it is evident that these attacks are well planned incidents carried out through individuals well experienced in harming those who are fighting for democracy, rule of law, independence of the judiciary and human rights in Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe law of the country doesn\u2019t seem to stretch to these people,\u201d they have pointed out.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, they had encouraged civil society groups including BASL, Federation of University Teachers Association and Associations of Journalists collaborating to stand together in the struggle to protect democratic rights of the people.
