{"id":133709,"date":"2014-11-26T17:06:43","date_gmt":"2014-11-26T11:36:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=133709"},"modified":"2014-12-04T19:14:49","modified_gmt":"2014-12-04T13:44:49","slug":"unp-made-a-historic-sacrifice-maithri","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/unp-made-a-historic-sacrifice-maithri\/","title":{"rendered":"UNP Made A Historic Sacrifice: Maithri"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UNP frontliners and senior members today convened to express the support of an undivided UNP for the candidacy of SLFP stalwart <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Maithripala+Sirisena&amp;x=8&amp;y=4\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Maithripala Sirisena<\/span><\/a>, indicating the creation of a successful coalition movement to back the common opposition movement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Maithri-at-Sirikotha.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-133711\" alt=\"Maithri at Sirikotha\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Maithri-at-Sirikotha.jpg\" width=\"634\" height=\"475\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Maithri-at-Sirikotha.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Maithri-at-Sirikotha-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Maithri-at-Sirikotha-800x600.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 634px) 100vw, 634px\" \/><\/a>Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and UNP frontliners Sajith Premadasa, Tissa Attanayake, Karu Jayasuriya held a media briefing at the Sirikotha today to which defected MP Rajith Senaratne as well as the common candidate and former Minister Maithripala Sirisena too attended.<\/p>\n<p>During the conference held this morning, Maithripala Sirisena said that their aim is to create a national government following the Presidential polls, if he is elected into power.<\/p>\n<p>He thanked the UNP for their support while adding the party has made a historic sacrifice in supporting him despite his position in the SLFP as the General Secretary.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The government is trying to mislead both the UNP-ers and SLFP-ers. We call upon the pblic o rise against this corrupt regime,&#8221; he said addressing the media and the public at the gathering today.<\/p>\n<p>He also stated that although they are faced with safety concerns upon leaving the government but stressed on the fact that he has placed his security upon the people.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile UNP frontliners Sajith Premadasa and party General Secretary Tissa Attanayake who also spoke to the media said that they support the decision made by the UNP.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our leader and working committee decided that the party should make a sacrifice. The UNP has spent enough time as the Opposition party. . . We believe this coalition will benefit the UNP-ers greatly,&#8221; UNP MP Sajith Premadasa said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe commended Maithripala for agreeing to be the common candidate and said he has made a brave decision.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Usually our opponents are the SLFP-ers but this time it is the Rajapaksa regime. . .Let us first unite with all other parties and ensure the common candidate emerges victorious,&#8221; he said while adding that it is time to create a new political culture which future generations would praise.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":22,"featured_media":133711,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,1,6969,2375],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-133709","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-colombotelegraph","category-news","category-popular-stories","category-stories"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.3 -
