Common candidate Maithripala Sirisena<\/span><\/a> yesterday said although he was extremely frustrated and disappointed by the inhumane and brutal treatment former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka<\/span><\/a> was subjected to by the Rajapaksa regime, neither he nor the other Ministers were in a position to criticize the actions.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a media event held to announce the decision of the Democratic Party led by Fonseka, to support the common Opposition movement Sirisena said his conscience has been troubling him for the past few years, particularly since 2010 when he saw the brutal manner in which Fonseka was treated by the Rajapaksas<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n

“But we were not in a position to object or speak up against them,” he said.<\/p>\n

He also added that he is expecting far worse harassment and challenges to be levelled against their movement, by the Rajapaksa regime in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n

He also pledged to restore Fonseka’s civic rights and military decorations within hours of his election.<\/p>\n

Sirisena also spoke about the deterioration of the SLFP and added although it was the SLFP votes that brought Mahinda into power, the party no longer remains active within MR’s government.<\/p>\n

“SLFP has been in a grave crisis during the past two years. It is no longer the political movement that its founder SWRD Bandaranaike envisioned it to be,” he added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
