{"id":136840,"date":"2015-01-12T15:03:59","date_gmt":"2015-01-12T09:33:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=136840"},"modified":"2015-01-17T17:58:08","modified_gmt":"2015-01-17T12:28:08","slug":"lawyers-call-for-de-facto-cj-pieris-to-step-down","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/lawyers-call-for-de-facto-cj-pieris-to-step-down\/","title":{"rendered":"Lawyers Call For De Facto CJ Pieris To Step Down"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lawyers and civil society organisations staged a protest in Hulftsdorp this morning, calling upon defacto CJ and Rajapaksa henchman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Mohan+Pieris&amp;x=6&amp;y=5\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mohan Pieris<\/span><\/a> to step down from the position.<\/p>\n<p>The protesting legal practitioners and civil society activists called on Pieris to step down and for the new government to restore and preserve judicial independence in Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_71793\" style=\"width: 277px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Mohan-Pieris4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71793\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-71793\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Mohan-Pieris4-267x300.jpg\" alt=\"De facto Chief Justice Mohan Pieris\" width=\"267\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Mohan-Pieris4-267x300.jpg 267w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Mohan-Pieris4.jpg 611w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-71793\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">De facto Chief Justice Mohan Pieris<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Soon after the new President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Maithripala+Sirisena&amp;x=10&amp;y=2\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Maithripala Sirisena<\/span><\/a> gave his oaths on Friday, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) met with him and the new Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Saturday, to urge the new President to arrange necessary steps to reinstate impeached CJ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Shirani+Bandaranayake&amp;x=7&amp;y=3\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Shirani Bandaranayake<\/span><\/a>. The BASL said they received a positive response from the President and the PM on the matter.<\/p>\n<p>CJ Shirani B was impeached in 2013 by the parliament through a motion that alleged corruption and 155 voted in favour while 49 voted against it. This move has been stringently criticised by local as well as international bodies that point out the impeachment is in violation of the Constitution and the Supreme Court too declared the impeachment attempt was illegal.<br \/>\nReinstating CJ Shirani B was one of the pledges made by the new President during his campaigning period. However, the process which they would follow in order to remove de-facto CJ Peiris from the position and re-appoint CJ Shirani B has not been revealed yet.<\/p>\n<p>Reports state that Peiris had been given a 48-hour deadline to step down gracefully and its due to expire today.
