Mangala Samaraweera<\/span><\/a> today lodged a complaint with the CID, requesting the launch of an immediate investigation into the conspiracy that was being hatched by the Rajapaksa brothers and their henchmen to subvert democracy by annulling the Presidential election results.<\/p>\n

Minister Samaraweera speaking to media outside the CID a short while ago said he has handed over a letter and has made a statement concerning his complaint on the attempt of the Rajapaksas to subvert the democratic process in the country in the wee hours of January 9.<\/p>\n

\u201cAccording to reliable sources, when the Presidential election results were being released and they hinted indications of being in favour of Maithripala Sirisena, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa<\/span><\/a> along with his brother Gotabaya<\/span><\/a>, former Minister Prof. Peiris, provincial councillor Udaya Gammanpila and de facto Chief Justice Mohan Pieris had hatched a plan at the Temple Trees to suspend the results and implement emergency law in the country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He said part of the plan had been to surround the Elections Department by the military and bend the Elections Commissioner to their will and create a dangerous situation in the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cFortunately, the IGP, Army Commander and the Attorney general Yuvanjan Wijeyathileka stood against this plan and refused to follow the orders. Thanks to their brave deeds, the democracy in the oldest democracy in Asia could be preserved,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Minister Samaraweera went on to state that this act is a violation of Sections 115 and 120 of the Penal Code and urged the CID to hold an urgent investigation on the matter.<\/p>\n
