The new Cabinet of Ministers who met last night with President Maithripala Sirisena<\/span><\/a> at its chair, decided to amend the gazetted 19th amendment<\/span><\/a>, to be effective at the end of the current presidency.<\/p>\n

\"Maithripala\"<\/a>The new amendment will the see the term ‘the President as the head of government’ being removed. In the previously gazetted version last week the President remained the head of the government after strong objections were raised by the SLFP and the JHU.<\/p>\n

Accordingly the initial amendment with the inclusion of the ‘ cabinet form of government’ as previously proposed.<\/p>\n

According to the new amendments the the President will act upon the advise of the Prime Minister. In the event there is a disagreement, between the two bodies the President can ask the ministers to re-consider a decision and if the disagreement persists the Cabinet of Ministers headed by the Prime Minister has to inform the decision of the cabinet of Ministers to parliament.<\/p>\n

When the matter was discussed yesterday, Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka<\/span><\/a> had requested that his objections to the proposal be recorded.<\/p>\n

President Maithripala who chaired the meeting had reportedly told Minister Ranawaka that ‘ he shouldn’t be in a hurry and there was enough time to discuss the matter’.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
