{"id":146102,"date":"2015-06-17T00:06:23","date_gmt":"2015-06-16T18:36:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=146102"},"modified":"2015-06-17T00:14:43","modified_gmt":"2015-06-16T18:44:43","slug":"un-side-event-seeks-referral-of-sri-lanka-to-the-icc-international-prosecution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/un-side-event-seeks-referral-of-sri-lanka-to-the-icc-international-prosecution\/","title":{"rendered":"UN Side Event Seeks Referral Of Sri Lanka To The ICC \u2013 International Prosecution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A panel discussion on &#8220;Impending High Commissioner&#8217;s Report on Sri Lanka&#8221; was held on the\u00a016th June 2015 in UNOG, Palais des Nations, Geneva.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_75945\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Geoffrey-Robertson-QC.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75945\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-75945\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Geoffrey-Robertson-QC-215x300.jpg\" alt=\"Geoffrey Robertson QC\" width=\"215\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Geoffrey-Robertson-QC-215x300.jpg 215w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/Geoffrey-Robertson-QC.jpg 426w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 215px) 100vw, 215px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-75945\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Geoffrey Robertson QC<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This event was organized by\u00a0Ibn Sina, with partnership of Collectif\u00a0la Paix au Sri Lanka, International Crime Prevention and Protection against Genocide (ICPPG)\u00a0and the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=TGTE&amp;x=7&amp;y=6\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">TGTE<\/span><\/a>) at the UN Human Rights Council, Geneva.<\/p>\n<p>The key speakers included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Geoffrey+Robertson+&amp;x=10&amp;y=5\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Geoffrey Robertson<\/span><\/a> QC an International Human Rights Barrister, Professor Ramu Manivannan from the University of Madras, with the session being moderated by Manicka Vasagar\u00a0Minister of International Affairs TGTE.<\/p>\n<p>The speakers raised some critical concerns about the Impending High Commissioner&#8217;s Report on Sri Lanka. The\u00a0\u00a0Panelist were\u00a0unanimous in raising questions about\u00a0how the Sri Lankan state can deliver justice, when the government and its leadership itself has been accused of committing war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide against the Tamils.<\/p>\n<p>They also agreed that there is no fundamental change in the political and legal environment in Sri Lanka vis-a-vis the Tamils.<\/p>\n<p>Geoffrey Robertson provided searching options of trial against Sri Lanka, such as referral to the ICC, Security Council based initiatives, hybrid mechanism and even sought an active role of the Secretary General.<\/p>\n<p>It was emphasized by Prof Manivannan that an electoral change need not be construed as political transformation in Sri Lanka.
