{"id":147116,"date":"2015-07-08T11:13:36","date_gmt":"2015-07-08T05:43:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=147116"},"modified":"2015-07-08T11:56:05","modified_gmt":"2015-07-08T06:26:05","slug":"ravi-k-orders-probe-into-tsunami-relief-vehicles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/ravi-k-orders-probe-into-tsunami-relief-vehicles\/","title":{"rendered":"Ravi K Orders Probe Into Tsunami Relief Vehicles\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Minister of Finance, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Ravi+Karunanayake&amp;x=11&amp;y=1\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ravi Karunanayake<\/span><\/a>, has initiated an inquiry into the importation of\u00a0 high-value vehicles for tsunami relief and subsequently given to third parties without paying due taxes and depriving the state of billions of rupees, the Ministry of Finance said today.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_147117\" style=\"width: 243px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Shiranthi.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-147117\" class=\"wp-image-147117 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Shiranthi.jpg\" alt=\"Former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaks\" width=\"233\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-147117\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Issuing a statement the Ministry said; &#8220;This was brought to light when a vehicle imported for a UN agency to carry out tsunami relief work in 2005 was involved in an accident on June 10, 2015 in Tangalla. The vehicle had been used illegally, violating Sri Lankan laws.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Minister has also directed the Customs chief to cause an internal investigation to find out if there had been any lapses on the part of the Sri Lanka customs in allowing the UN agency to transfer the possession of vehicles imported duty free into the country and not taking action for over three years to recover taxes due to the state.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Director general has been asked to find out how many such vehicles had been imported on duty free basis to carry out emergency relief operations, but have ended up in private hands depriving the state of due revenue.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is believed that hundreds of vehicles had been imported duty free and most of them have disappeared and efforts will be made to trace them and recover the revenue that is due to the state.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Minister has also directed the Customs chief to cause an international investigation to find out if there had been any lapses on the part of the Sri Lanka customs in allowing the UN agency to transfer the possession of vehicles imported duty free into the country and not taking action for over three years to recover taxes due to the state.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The vehicle which met with an accident while being driven by a member of the former president\u2019s security detail has been given to Siriliya Saviya Foundation (SSF) of former First Lady <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Shiranthi+Rajapaksa&amp;x=12&amp;y=4\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Shiranthi Rajapaksa<\/span><\/a>. Police investigations have revealed that the\u00a0 WFP had &#8216;gifted&#8217; this vehicle and another to the SSF.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The legality of this &#8216;gift&#8217; is also to be investigated with the help of the relevant agencies.
