The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake<\/span><\/a>\u00a0today objected to the term \u201cNational Government<\/span><\/a>\u201d being used to describe the consensus reached between the UNP and the SLFP.<\/p>\n

Speaking in parliament Dissanayake stated that the term \u201cNational Government\u201d being used to describe the UNP \u2013 SLFP coalition was a violation of the constitution.<\/p>\n

Dissanayake argived that as per the article 46 (5) of the constitution the term \u201cNational Government\u201d could only be used to a coalition which is formed by the political party which holds the highest number of seats in parliament with the support of all other parties in parliament.<\/p>\n

Dissanayake’s assertion meanwhile was met with loud protests from the government benches and due to the ensuing uproar speaker had to adjourn the parliament briefly for ten minutes.<\/p>\n

The Mahajana Ekasath Peramuna leader, UPFA MP Dinseh Gunewardena too supported Dissanayake’s assertion and added that using the term \u201cNational Government\u201d to describe a political coalition which did not have representation from all parties in parliament was illegal.<\/p>\n

However, the MP’s from the government benches argued that the political party with majority seats in the \u201cHouse\u201d could form a national government with the support of a majority of parties in parliament.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
