President Maithripala Sirisena<\/span><\/a> participated in the 70th Session of the United Nations General Assembly at the UN Headquarters in New York today, accompanied by his son Daham Sirisena<\/span><\/a> who has no official status whatsoever in the Sri Lankan delegation.<\/p>\n

When President Sirisena left for New York and when he arrived in New York the Presidential Media portrayed him as a simple man in contrast to his predecessor Mahinda Rajapaksa whose foreign visits were made with a large entourage with the tax payer having to foot enormous bills. These sentiments were echoed by almost all sections of the local media in Sri Lanka. Indeed pictures of him arriving in New York in a disheveled state was hailed as an example of his simplicity.<\/p>\n

Sirisena rode to power pledging to eliminate the nepotism and favoritism that marked Rajapaksa reign.<\/p>\n

The President is seen with his son Daham, Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera and Justice Minister Wijedasa Rajapakshe.<\/p>\n
