Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has met\u00a0Daham Sirisena<\/a><\/span>\u00a0at the\u00a0UN Headquarters in New York last night.<\/span><\/p>\n

President Maithripala Sirisena participated in the 70th Session<\/span><\/a> of the United Nations General Assembly at the UN Headquarters in New York today, accompanied by his son Daham Sirisena who has no official status whatsoever in the Sri Lankan delegation.<\/p>\n

When President Sirisena left for New York and when he arrived in New York the Presidential Media portrayed him as a simple man in contrast to his predecessor Mahinda Rajapaksa whose foreign visits were made with a large entourage with the tax payer having to foot enormous bills. These sentiments were echoed by almost all sections of the local media in Sri Lanka. Indeed pictures of him arriving in New York in a disheveled state was hailed as an example of his simplicity.<\/p>\n

Sirisena rode to power pledging to eliminate the nepotism and favoritism that marked Rajapaksa reign.<\/p>\n
