{"id":152471,"date":"2015-10-21T13:23:07","date_gmt":"2015-10-21T07:53:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=152471"},"modified":"2020-03-25T17:00:36","modified_gmt":"2020-03-25T11:30:36","slug":"armed-forces-committed-war-crimes-udalagama-and-paranagama-reports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/armed-forces-committed-war-crimes-udalagama-and-paranagama-reports\/","title":{"rendered":"Armed Forces Committed War Crimes: Udalagama And Paranagama Reports"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Udalagama and Paranagama reports released yesterday allege that the military committed war crimes during the war against Tamil rebels.<\/p>\n<p>The long awaited reports also points the finger at the LTTE for serious human rights violations including the recruitment of under age children as combatants.<\/p>\n<p>The Paranagama report tabled in parliament yesterday says that during the last 12 hours of the war LTTE cadres had run amok killing scores of Tamil civilians.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/sl_killing_1_20110704.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-91\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/sl_killing_1_20110704.jpg\" alt=\"GSL to consider Channel 4 allegations \u2013 UK government report says\" width=\"400\" height=\"303\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/sl_killing_1_20110704.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/sl_killing_1_20110704-300x227.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a>The 178 page report notes that the documentary shown by British TV network, Channel 4 titled \u201cNo Fire Zone: Sri Lanka Killing Fields&#8221; may have genuine footage of soldiers, torturing and killing either LTTE combatants or Tamil civilians.<\/p>\n<p>The report says that there is enough evidence to suggest that some members of the armed forces committed acts during the war. However for the larger part of the report, the Paranagama commission points the finger at the LTTE over killings, abductions, extortion and other atrocities<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile commenting on an incident which occurred on 14th August 2006,\u00a0where fifty-three Tamil school girls and 3 staff members were killed, at Sencholai children&#8217;s home in Vallipuram the report says that there is evidence to suggest that aerial bombing could be the cause for the mayhem.<\/p>\n<p>The Udulagama report says that the killing of 17 aid workers in Muttur and the killing of 5 students in Trincomalee could be related to military.<\/p>\n<p>The report also says that heavy shelling had caused mass deaths and adds that both the LTTE and military was responsible.<\/p>\n<p>The Udulagama report has recommended setting up of Human Rights monitoring units at every Police station in the country with highly trained officers to handle related issues in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile according to reliable sources Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe was overheard saying to some of his confidantes that he and President Maithripala Sirisena had decided not to release the two reports ahead of the 30th UN Human rights Council sessions as this could have been disadvantageous to the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":22,"featured_media":91,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,1,2375],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-152471","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-colombotelegraph","category-news","category-stories"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.3 -
