\u201cI have seen palaces, I have seen bunkers \u2013 but this is the first time I have seen a \u2018Palatial Bunker\u2019, the JVP leader cum Opposition Chief Whip Anura Kumara Dissanayake<\/span><\/a> said commenting on an underground facility built at President\u2019s house premises in Fort during former President Mahinda Rajapaksa\u2019s time.<\/p>\n

The multimillion-rupee facility has been described by Rajapaksa as a bunker built for the protection of his and other high notch politicians and officials during the war.<\/p>\n

Rajapaksa has said that he used to have meetings<\/span><\/a> with the cabinet of ministers and Security Council members at the President\u2019s house when the war was raging on and the bunker with a secret exit tunnel had been built to meet any emergency.<\/p>\n

However, refuting Rajapaksa\u2019s claims, Dissanayake told media last night that he has received reliable information that the \u201cPalatial Bunker\u201d had nothing to do with national security.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf national security is the issue, Rajapaksa has to explain why he used tiles imported from Italy and other items such as lightening equipment, furniture and expensive fittings imported from other countries for the facility using public funds\u201d<\/p>\n

Dissanayake charged that the facility had nothing to do with national security but was built as a safe haven for the Rajapaksa family with modern living quarters, which will be self-contained.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was to ensure continuation of the luxurious living of Rajapaksa and family even during an emergency situation. This they did at the expense of public funds\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile government sources said the facility had cost over Rs. 400 million.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
