{"id":154056,"date":"2015-12-02T14:34:18","date_gmt":"2015-12-02T09:04:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=154056"},"modified":"2020-03-26T13:28:18","modified_gmt":"2020-03-26T07:58:18","slug":"jvp-acknowledges-88-89-bloodbath-should-be-probed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/jvp-acknowledges-88-89-bloodbath-should-be-probed\/","title":{"rendered":"JVP Acknowledges 88-89 Bloodbath Should Be Probed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=JVP&amp;x=12&amp;y=6\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">JVP<\/span><\/a>) today agreed to the appointment of a special independent commission to probe the incidents that occurred during 88-89 period, which saw a\u00a0blood-bath in the country.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/JVP-89.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-148406\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/JVP-89.jpg\" alt=\"JVP 89\" width=\"473\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/JVP-89.jpg 473w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/JVP-89-270x300.jpg 270w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 473px) 100vw, 473px\" \/><\/a>Speaking at the final day of the second reading of Budget 2016, currently in session, JVP leader <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Anura+Kumara+Dissanayake&amp;x=11&amp;y=7\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Anura Kumara Dissanayake<\/span><\/a> said his party will both agree and support an independent mechanism to investigate 88-89 incidents.<\/p>\n<p>Dissanyake however stressed that such a probe should be carried out in an impartial manner while investigating all sections involved and also the incidents that led to a youth uprising in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>Dissanayake while welcoming an independent investigative mechanism said that such a probe could also help to avert such disasters in the future.<\/p>\n<p>The JVP leader said that such a commission should involve persons with indisputable integrity and expert knowledge, since some of the persons who were directly and indirectly responsible for the killings at the time might still be members of the current government.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier during the budget debate, Science, Technology and Research Minister Susil Premajayanth called for a full investigation into the events of 1988-89 which saw unprecedented destruction to both man and property.<\/p>\n<p>Premajayanth urged the appointment of a Commission to investigate the mass killings that took place during the period in question when the JVP staged its second uprising.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the vote after the second reading of the budget will be taken in the evening today.<\/p>\n<p>President Maithripala Sirisena who arrived in the country yesterday after visiting Malta and France was seen at the parliament premises since early morning.<\/p>\n<p>Sirisena held a group meeting of the SLFP members in parliament and urged them to vote for the budget. He requested those SLFP MP\u2019s who have opted to sit in the opposition to abstain if they cannot say \u201cAye\u201d to the proposals, a SLFP MP said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Minister Rajitha Senaratne said that at least five opposition UPFA members will vote for the budget.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa were not seen within the house during the morning session at the ongoing second reading of the budget.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":22,"featured_media":150217,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,1,2375],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-154056","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-colombotelegraph","category-news","category-stories"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.3 -
