{"id":158860,"date":"2016-03-08T16:20:15","date_gmt":"2016-03-08T10:50:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=158860"},"modified":"2016-03-08T16:50:06","modified_gmt":"2016-03-08T11:20:06","slug":"ranils-tax-bombshell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/ranils-tax-bombshell\/","title":{"rendered":"Ranil&#8217;s Tax Bombshell"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sri Lankans were in for a rude shock this afternoon, after Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe announced proposed tax amendments in Parliament today, as his government looked at new ways to generate income\u00a0amidst economic instability.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/ranil-awarding-expressway-contract-to-controversial-mcc-raises-questions\/ranil-28\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-148462\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-148462\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Ranil1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Ranil\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Ranil1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Ranil1-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>According to the proposed amendments, the Value Added Tax will increase to 15%, while the Nation Building Tax will remain unchanged at 2%.<\/p>\n<p>However, Wickremesinghe assured that the increased VAT will not be imposed on essential commodities and electricity tariffs.
