Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Speaking at an event to mark the UNHCR\u2019s 10th anniversary, Moon said that human rights are, sadly, \u201cunder attack\u201d worldwide, and therefore UNHCR must increase its impact on the ground over its second decade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Council&#8217;s work on Burundi, Guinea, South Sudan, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Sri+Lanka&amp;x=6&amp;y=4\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Sri Lanka<\/span><\/a>, Syria and many other places has helped the international community to respond to human rights emergencies and work towards accountability,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n<p>Moon said that over the past decade, human rights mechanisms have been strengthened, with such instruments as the Universal Periodic Review, which periodically examines the human rights performance of all 193 UN Member States.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, Syria figured high in the UN Chief\u2019s speech. \u201cFor five years, the people of that country have endured horrific and widespread human rights abuses including extrajudicial executions and torture,\u201d he said, noting that over 250,000 Syrians have been killed, and nearly half of all Syrians have been displaced from their homes.<\/p>\n<p>The UN chief said an important task for the 47-member Human Rights Council is to reinforce the links between human rights, peace and security, and development. \u201cWhile Member States have the primary responsibility for upholding rights, it is Member States that are all too often in breach of their commitments,\u201d he said, urging the Human Rights Council to more than ever pursue its work with courage and persistence.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":22,"featured_media":60551,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,2186,1,2375],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-159326","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-colombotelegraph","category-featured-news","category-news","category-stories"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.3 -
