The Criminal Investigations Department’s investigation into Rugby player Wasim Thajudeen<\/span><\/a>‘s death may thwart Senior DIG S.M. Wickremesinghe’s IGP bid, highly placed government sources told Colombo Telegraph.<\/p>\n

Apart from his close friendship with former Senior DIG Anura Senanayake, one of the possible suspects in the case, Wickremesinghe has also worked closely with personal body guards of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Wickremesinghe functioned as the former President’s security chief when the latter was in power.<\/p>\n

Several personal bodyguards of the former President, including the individual known as ‘Captain Tissa<\/span><\/a>‘, have been identified as suspects in the investigation into Wasim Thajudeen’s murder.<\/p>\n

Highly placed government sources told Colombo Telegraph that Thajudeen investigation would be a serious obstacle to Wickremesinghe’s IGP bid. Although Wickremesinghe has the backing of President Maithripala Sirisena, the final decision in this regard would be made by the Constitutional Council appointed under the provisions of the 19th Amendment.<\/p>\n

With this fresh development, Senior DIG Pujith Jayasundara has become the front-runner in the IGP race.<\/p>\n

The Constitutional Council has summoned three senior DIGs – namely S.M. Wickremesinghe, Pujith Jayasundara and Chandana Wickremaratne – for a round of interviews on Monday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
