Flood hit Sri Lanka reached out to the world on Friday, seeking assistance to help over 425,000 flood and landslide affected victims to rebuild their lives.<\/p>\n

The Ministry of Disaster Management in a public appeal released information of a special Bank Account open for both local and foreign donations, as the death toll increased to 63, with a total of 427,918 people affected by floods and landslides, as per the latest report released by the Disaster Management Centre on Friday noon.\"Flood<\/a><\/p>\n

India was among the first to rush aid to Sri Lanka, dispatching two naval ships full of relief materials, followed by an Indian Air Force C-17 Globemaster heavy transport aircraft which was heading towards Colombo with medicines, a water purification plant and tents.<\/p>\n

The Government also announced that it had decided to waive off the import duty slapped on all goods that are being sent to Sri Lanka as flood relief.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Commonwealth Secretary General Patricia Scotland called on the Commonwealth to provide support to Sri Lanka through coordinated assistance, following the landslide which killed over 150 people. \u201cI am calling on the Commonwealth family to provide support to Sri Lanka through coordinated assistance in the aftermath of this tragedy,” she said.<\/p>\n

During a meeting with Foreign Minister Mangala Samraweera on Thursday, Heads of Diplomatic Missions assured their countries assistance to Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n
