Murugesu was arrested in early 2015, at the Bandaranaike International Airport, when she returned to the country from France.<\/p>\n<p>In early May, United Nations Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, Juan E. M\u00e9ndez called on the Sri Lankan government to repeal the controversial PTA, which allows for prolonged arbitrary detention without trial, and allows police investigators to use torture as a routine method of work against suspects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the government is to replace the PTA (if necessary) with any other legislation, then a robust and transparent national debate should take place that provides for full participation of civil society,\u201d he said at the conclusion of his visit to Sri Lanka last month.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":22,"featured_media":157333,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,1,2375],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-163343","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-colombotelegraph","category-news","category-stories"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.3 -
