{"id":164934,"date":"2016-07-09T00:04:25","date_gmt":"2016-07-08T18:34:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=164934"},"modified":"2016-07-13T16:50:43","modified_gmt":"2016-07-13T11:20:43","slug":"attorney-general-says-mp-car-permit-abuse-is-not-a-matter-of-national-importance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/attorney-general-says-mp-car-permit-abuse-is-not-a-matter-of-national-importance\/","title":{"rendered":"Attorney General Says MP Car Permit Abuse Is Not A Matter Of National Importance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Attorney General has informed the Supreme Court that \u2018car permit abuse is not a matter of National Importance\u2019 and therefore there is no need for a fuller bench to be nominated to consider the case filed by a right\u2019s activist over the abuse of car permits given to MPs.<\/p>\n<p>However, despite the Attorney General\u2019s stand, the Supreme Court decided to refer the matter to the Chief Justice to consider nomination of a special bench and afforded an early date on 18th July 2016 to the right\u2019s activist to support the case.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/attorney-general-says-mp-car-permit-abuse-is-not-a-matter-of-national-importance\/gammanpila-permit\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-164936\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-164936\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/GAMMANPILA-PERMIT.jpeg\" alt=\"GAMMANPILA PERMIT\" width=\"639\" height=\"881\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/GAMMANPILA-PERMIT.jpeg 639w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/GAMMANPILA-PERMIT-218x300.jpeg 218w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 639px) 100vw, 639px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The case filed against the President Maithripala Sirisena and Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake by rights activist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Nagananda+Kodituwakku&amp;x=10&amp;y=8\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Nagananda Kodituwakku<\/span><\/a> for MP car permit abuse. The Attorney General gave his standing on the matter when the case was taken up at the Supreme Court yesterday.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/attorney-general-says-mp-car-permit-abuse-is-not-a-matter-of-national-importance\/gammanpila-entry\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-164939\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-164939\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/GAMMANPILA-ENTRY.jpeg\" alt=\"GAMMANPILA ENTRY\" width=\"639\" height=\"881\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/GAMMANPILA-ENTRY.jpeg 639w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/07\/GAMMANPILA-ENTRY-218x300.jpeg 218w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 639px) 100vw, 639px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The activist submitted to the Court that the matter involves gross betrayal of people\u2019s executive and legislative power by the Cabinet of Ministers and MPs as they have betrayed the power entrusted in them by the people purely on trust to commit revenue frauds and therefore there is an unavoidable national duty vested in the Judiciary, to take cognizance of these financial crimes and deal with wrongdoers decisively and appropriately.<\/p>\n<p>Producing two permits and the Customs declarations presented to Customs by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Udaya+Gammanpila&amp;x=14&amp;y=4\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Udaya Gammanpila<\/span><\/a> and Asanga Semasighe for clearance of two more Toyota Land Cruisers Diesel vehicles recently, evading the payment of fiscal levies of Rs. 33.5 million each, the activist submitted to the court that the MP permit abuse would incur over Rs. 6 billion in revenue loss as permits are freely sold in the open market for Rs. 25 million or more as the permits have been issued with no conditions attached. Therefore, considering the National Importance in the case where the people\u2019s executive and legislative power have been openly abused the activist requested the Court to fix the matter for early date to support before a fuller bench.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Attorney General submitted to the Court that the \u2018permit abuse is not a matter of National Importance\u2019 and therefore there is no need for a fuller bench to be nominated to consider the matter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":22,"featured_media":164940,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,2186,1,6969,2375],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-164934","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-colombotelegraph","category-featured-news","category-news","category-popular-stories","category-stories"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.3 -
