The Supreme Court today gave the green light to Parliamentarian Udaya Gammanpila<\/span><\/a> to proceed with his Fundamental Rights petition against his recent arrest and remand over an alleged fraud case.<\/p>\n

Accordingly, the case will be taken up on December 14, 2016.<\/p>\n

In his petition, Gammanpila has claimed that the respondents had violated his fundamental rights, due to his arrest which was form of an arbitrary arrest and detention. He went on to add in his petition that the arrest and his subsequent remand had also violated his basic fundamental rights.<\/p>\n

In June, Gammanpila was arrested and remanded after he was accused of using his power of attorney to sell shares of an Australian company. According to Australian Businessman Brayan Shadik<\/span><\/a>, Gammanpila had illegally sold shares worth more than one million Australian dollars that the Australian businessman had invested in Sri Lanka.<\/p>\n

In July, Gammanpila was released on bail over the charges, but a travel ban was issued against him by the Fort Magistrate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
