{"id":165091,"date":"2016-07-12T17:19:04","date_gmt":"2016-07-12T11:49:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?p=165091"},"modified":"2016-07-12T17:19:04","modified_gmt":"2016-07-12T11:49:04","slug":"dew-accuses-ranil-of-conspiring-against-cope-to-safeguard-arjuna-mahendran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/dew-accuses-ranil-of-conspiring-against-cope-to-safeguard-arjuna-mahendran\/","title":{"rendered":"DEW Accuses Ranil Of Conspiring Against COPE To Safeguard Arjuna Mahendran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former chairman of the Committee on Public Enterprises (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=COPE&amp;x=7&amp;y=6\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">COPE<\/span><\/a>) and leader of the Communist Party <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=DEW+Gunasekera&amp;x=11&amp;y=6\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">DEW Gunaseker<\/span><\/a>a has accused Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and several other UNP members of\u00a0conspiring against COPE to clear former Central Bank Governor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/?s=Arjuna+Mahendran&amp;x=12&amp;y=5\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Arjuna Mahendran<\/span><\/a>\u2019s name from several charges including his alleged involvement in two Treasury bond scams.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_142743\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/index.php\/amend-standing-orders-govt-should-follow-cope-recommendations-dew\/dew-gunasekera\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-142743\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-142743\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-142743\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DEW-Gunasekera-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"DEW\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DEW-Gunasekera-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.colombotelegraph.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DEW-Gunasekera-50x50.jpg 50w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-142743\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">DEW<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Gunasekera has claimed that several UNP Members were working in a manner giving scant regard to COPE, while also working in a conspiring manner which can affect the outcome of the COPE decision against Mahendran.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, some members of the UNP which is the main party in the coalition government have made statements to the effect that the Auditor General does not have the necessary qualifications to handle certain matters including releasing an independent report on the bond scam.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is the government that appointed him to that position, so why are they questioning about his qualification now.
